In intensive care in an induced coma after an injury that should never have happened.

Hopefully he's ok and that the fa change that pathetic rule where they don't flag for clear offsides.

The injury was from playing football could easily have happened if he’d been onside it’s silly to equate the injury with an offside not given

Straight to defending officials.

If the clear offside was flagged and given then it doesn't happen. It wasn't one even a close one that they wanted to see what happened and then check.

There is an obvious player welfare issue here but it has nothing to do with VAR.

I didn't say it had?

I said it wasn't a tight offside call where they would let it play out and then check VAR. He was about 10 yards offside.

Those are the rules - it’s not up to the referee to ignore them just because there’s a chance a player might get injured in some hypothetical incident that follows.

I would say the obvious scandal here is a player suffering an injury that ultimately requires hospital treatment staying on the field to play for a further 10 minutes without being subbed off.

The offside thing is an absolute charade when everyone and their dog knows the flag is going to go up but for some reason it has to be delayed. Talk about time being wasted in football? There's a few seconds that can be recovered by the officials.

You’re right but you’ve missed the point. The rules should be changed so that match officials can give offsides where it’s obvious to the naked eye.

There’s been a few avoidable injuries that would’ve been prevented if the referees could flag up early where the player is offside. It’s common sense.

That is the rule

Everyone knows that’s the rule so people can’t criticising the match officials or VAR for that per se.

The debate here is whether or not that rule should change because there’s been significant incidents that put player welfare at risk.

I’m sure Van Dijk done his ACL in a similar incident.

Or in other words, change the rules so they’re not applied consistently but subjectively?

I’ll say it again (and as someone who truly despises VAR) - the way this incident has been spun into an avoidable disaster caused by VAR is crazy, considering the player wasn’t even subbed off after suffering an injury that would end up putting him into a coma.

The referees and linesmen can see when there’s daylight between the attacker and the defender. The whole purpose of VAR was to be a tool for when incidents were ‘clear and obvious’ rather than vice versa.

I don’t blame VAR, the rules need to be tweaked to avoid scenarios where players get injured because there’s whistle hasn’t blown up. From a spectator point of view, it’s jarring watching them play on when even we can see it’s offside.

The whole purpose of VAR is to try and make sure that refs are consistent and get it right. The current guidance is not to put the flag up unless the linesman is certain it’s offside. If we want to make that even more subjective then I don’t see why we don’t just let the human refs handle everything and scrap VAR altogether but I’ve already lost that argument.

As for the potential for injuries - should we stop referees from trying to play the advantage as well? Or have them stop the game if they don’t think a player’s going to reach an overhit pass?

Sorry I mean if they are clearly offside it should be flagged it’s only where it’s tight and play should play out

The rule makers are ruining what is a very simple game with unwieldy laws to shoehorn in the tech IMO.

To add to your point, the semi automated offside system immediately tells VAR if it’s onside or not. So surely the intelligent thing is to have that system immediately buzz through to the match officials and/or VAR. They can make the call in real time.

Goal line technology works a treat (when it works) because it buzzes to the referee’s watch. Hence it’s the least controversial of the new additions in recent years.
