There's banter, and then there's pointless abuse along with the same bullshit political arguments. Plenty of room in off topic for all that. Match threads should be free of it.

I thought the big difference between the Rangers game and the match yesterday was the absence of Kelly and Hamer together in midfield. I felt that with them in midfield and the five man back line we really suffocated Rangers creativity while making one or two chances ourselves.
Swindon created more chances against us than any team last season with the possible exceptions of Rotherham away and Fleetwood at home.
I wouldn't be worried by yesterday's performance and would think we will be dramatically better come the first game of the season.

Fitness was off & as you said the midfield was not there Hamer was pretty much on his game & when Kelly did come on Hamer was already off,it’s the cover I worry about in there if sheaf signs we are ok in there.

A number of the midfield issues yesterday were down to Hamer as well. He's a talented boy who will be a great player for use but yesterday he wasn't as MR said checking to see were his midfield partners were and pushing forward and leaving us empty in the cdm position which allowed to Swindon number 10 (position) to pick up the ball in far too much space.

The strikers were isolated yes but no one was helping them, that was the worst I have ever seen O'Hare play he was rank rotten and aprt from one run and pass Allen was Garbage.

Giles looked promising and while Mason is likely a better actual left back in this system it's got to be Giles all the way.

In the end we were poor and we looked like we'd been down club heat the night before the game but there's definite things we can work on and 9 times out of 10 in a non friendly a fully fit City beats them easily.

Would it be worthwhile to sell Mason (unless he wants to leave?). We’d get about £100k and need to sign someone better who is happy on the bench, that doesn’t seem likely

Not if all we've got are Giles, Mason and Newton and i don't think a LWB is our priority in the transfer market right now. He's about a good a back up as we could hope to get with our financial constraints.

If we play wingbacks, we need a different type of player, really. And yes, I'd have thought he may well want to go - started last season in our team with rave reviews, ended up third choice for a spell last season, looks like backup is the best he can hope for, this.

I'd keep Mason (if he isn't going to be an unhappy distraction) as if we revert to a back 4 he is going to be a far better option for that role than Giles.

All that game was a posh training kick about , yea you will get a theme of a player and skills , it means nothing , someone already said Liverpool had a terrible pre season last year. They are meaningless games and to be honest a kick about not worth worrying about

We can’t compare to Liverpool they had world class players it was clear they would be challenging regardless of pre season losses,we don’t have them type of players hence why fitness should be a massive focus

Says the clown crying because he thinks Marxists are trying to disband the country!! Haha!!

I'd imagine you voted Tory. If you did, Boris just put Claire Fox in the lords and has Muzira what's her name as an advisor. So if you're worried about Marxism you should be looking a bit closer to home you dribbling simpleton!!

Match thread guys and gals. Sign of the times I guess. Everything boils down to political beliefs and whether you’re a gammon or a snowflake, but maybe there should be a rule about politics in match threads if we can’t even get through a preseason friendly without it descending into the same old shit.

Gary Breen has taken a bit of stick on here in his role as commentator. As a player for us, he was never one of my favourites. I thought that that like a few of our players at that time, he was riding the gravey train, more interested in himself than the club, a view strengthened when he ran down his contract and left the club for free.
Yesterday I felt he spoke with a degree of affection for the club. He was also more clued in about our recent history and our current players (comments about Shipley's chances of playing for Ireland and Jones recovery from injury for example).
Doesn't happen so often now that Oggy is a fixture but often guest pundits on CWR often hadn't got a clue about the players. (Stuart Giddins an honourable exception).

Aside from his non polished accent I thought Breen was quite insightful and had bothered to do a bit of homework

The main commentator was ridiculous yesterday the way he was talking about the match as if it was a crucial league/cup tie plus he seemed absolutely flabbergasted that City were constantly trying to pass it from the back until Breen had to point out that that‘s how we‘ve been playing under Robins for a season...eurgh

Mason is certainly far more effective in a flat back four but you do have to wonder whether he's consistent enough for the Championship. The contrast between his performances at the beginning of last season and after he was dropped was mind boggling. Once he was dropped for McCallum after the 4-0 drumming by Rotherham (I think), it genuinely seemed like he almost forgot how to play football in the games that he did feature in; and to make matters worse he was hardly pulling up trees in the U23s either. He's not untalented and still young, so if Robins can find a way to get his form back to where it was during the front end of last season then I'd happily keep but if not I wouldn't be at all surprised if we bring another LB in and Mason is sent out on loan.

If we can can get better I'd say go for it but out of the current squad he's our best option as a lb in a back 4 as things stand. As we have Giles though i'd say it's unlikely Robins will be looking for any Lwb/lb this off season.
