Strong Enough to Compete in the Championship? (1 Viewer)

How many games did he play in the championship?

He has only started 37 league games and according to Soccerbase 22 of them were in League One last season.

He has made 32 appearances for Preston this season, including 23 Championship starts in what is his first full campaign in senior football. Barton made his League debut a year ago tomorrow for Preston in a 3-2 win over Sc-unithorpe.

Obviously they were 23 shit games and hence lots of newspapers made up that because he was playing badly wolves and Liverpool were taking a look at him.

Someone said neither player have had a successful spell in the championship Barton has.

You do not get linked in the papers to premiership sides be it just speculation or not because you are playing shit.

That does not happen.

They speculate about people moving to one of the top teams when that person is doing well and is rated.

The answer is in there I am sure you can work it out.

Peter Bodak actually signed for Man Utd. Do you think he was a top player? I thought he was rubbish - so did they when they signed him.

How well would you say Bigi played? He got a £1m transfer to the PL

Liverpool were in silly season, signing young British players for silly amounts. I don't doubt they scouted Barton but they had 3 transfer windows to buy him and didn't. We need to drop this "injury prevented a move to Liverpool" nonsense. Whether they were interested or not his injury had nothing to do with it.

Well he obviously was shit - they did not persue their interest once they saw him play -- did they?

Ok he was playing badly.

The journo's picked his name out of a hat and decided to speculate that premiership teams were taking a look at him because of his good performances.
The article above that made reference to him having a string if good performances was also made up.

It was all one mass conspiracy to create the false illusion that Barton played well in the championship for Preston.

You and Grendal are right.

BOLTON boss Owen Coyle is set to swoop for Preston midfielder Adam Barton – despite the Championship side slapping a £2million price tag on the 19-year-old.

Coyle has been alerted to Barton’s displays for North End since breaking into Darren Ferguson’s team

Another one in on the conspiracy. This bloody thing is bigger than the hacking scandal.

Media scum again, here they have alluded that it is Bartons performances in the championship that is attracting interest.

You and Grendal are right.

Not necessarily playing badly, just they heard about a young talent with potential, they checked him out they decided not to pursue it.

There were numerous posts on here saying Bigi was generally poor (I actually lied the lad) and not ready but the Newcastle scouts obviously thought there was worth pursuing.

It's the whole 'Bartons potentially a PL player' based purely on the Liverpool speculation that irritates me. He might have potential, h might turn put to be a world beater but at the moment he isn't good enough to get in our started 11, there is no proof what so ever that either he or fleck are 'championship players at least' at this point in time.

And did they make an attempt to sign him? 3 transfer windows before he broke his leg?

I am not saying that.

Someone said he has never had a good spell in the championship.

Most of the speculation points to him at tracking attention due to his performances.

Hence he did have a good spell in the championship.

Whether they signed him for the prem or not is not my point.

I think he can do a job in the championship he has previously had a good spell there.

His injury has impacted in his career, he is still only 21 hopefully he can get back there with us.

Andrew wing and Richard Duffy had one decent spell in the championship.

Hopefully Barton will have a second decent spell with us.

He has only had one go at it so far and it went well

Not really he got relegated and none of the teams linked to him were interested enough to actually put in an offer for him. Then PNE didn't want him and sold him to us, where he's sat on the bench.

Anything else significant happen during that time?

His injury has had limited impact on his career, as bad an injury it was he only missed 2 and a bit months of his careers. Thomas has missed far more this season.

The 21-year-old midfielder, who completed his move from Preston on Monday, penning a three-year deal at the Ricoh Arena, missed the final four months of last season with a dislocated ankle.

He told the club's official website: "My injuries are behind me now and I am just happy to get back out on the pitch. I played my best football in the Championship and I'm looking to the future, that is where I want to be and the club wants to be.

"I want to play week in, week out and use this as a great opportunity, which it is. The situation at Preston meant I couldn't get any games under my belt so I'm happy to get playing again at Coventry.

"Relegation was probably difficult for the club last year but judging on the signings so far the club is aiming to recover fairly quickly.

"It is really positive to go to a club which wants to move forward and bounce back. The quality of the signings has been very impressive and with the amount of players who have stayed at the club, we will be a top outfit."

Even he is in on the conspiracy suggesting he played well in the championship

Do you think Thomas will be good in the championship?

I think if he is specialised as a defensive midfielder he could be an ok Championship player.

Like with Barton.

However this squad can only just survive or be mid to bottom of the championship.

I think most if the players are at that level at best.

We will need three cracking championship players your Keoghs Marlon Kings etc with this lot.

Then a hell of a lot of luck and the momentum and we may sneak 6th.

No chance. We had cracking players like Gunnar, turner, king, juke, Keogh, best, Westwood and we still finished about 18th most seasons

And can we get out of this league before we start predicting promotion from the championship?!

I generally take your point Stu ,but they were grossly let down in the way their managers set up to play.

I do agree with you there wingy. The worst thing that ever happened was Southampton and Norwich acheiving back to back promotions.

Our fans are starting to build expectations for next season and we haven't even got out of this league yet.

The Championship is full of teams spending far more than we could hope to match. Our players would have drawn interest were they genuinely better than our current level-so we'd have a good time staying up, let alone going up. We need someone with a hell of a lot of money to get us to that kind of level.

When you say previous success in the championship

Barton had personal success in the championship even if Preston didn't prior to his injury

Wolves could be set to battle Liverpool over a summer swoop for £1m-rated Preston midfielder Adam Barton.

Manager Mick McCarthy made the latest Wolves check on the highly-rated 19-year-old in North End’s 2-1 defeat at Reading on Tuesday night.

But Liverpool are also in the hunt, with Reds assistant manager Sammy Lee seen at Deepdale several times this season. Preston-born Barton is described as a ball-playing midfielder who likes to get forward.,

He has made 32 appearances for Preston this season, including 23 Championship starts in what is his first full campaign in senior football. Barton made his League debut a year ago tomorrow for Preston in a 3-2 win over Scunthorpe.

If a teenager starts in a championship club, regardless of their performances, Premier League clubs will always take a look at them. Therefore I'm sorry, but I wouldn't consider that substantial evidence that he is good enough for Championship at least!
Having seen him play many times myself I think that whilst he does have ability, he also drifts out of games and ultimately needs to perform for 90 minutes not 10. If he does this then perhaps he can establish himself as a good League 1 player. If he adds a little steel and bravery to his game, goes to the gym and bulks up perhaps, then maybe he could prove to be a good championship player. Maybe.

Fleck was a flop at Blackpool and whilst he has potential, if he were good enough he would be starting in our team. Robins sees the guy in training, day in and day out, and clearly he isn't good enough to get in our 1st XI.
He was obviously an exceptional talent at 15/16, but I honestly don't think he can have improved too much since then; or he would surely be having more of an impact in the starting line-up!

They're definitely both assets, and while both are still young have every chance of proving themselves in the Championship and potentially the PL in the future. However, based on this season's performances, I don't believe they would offer enough in the Championship in just 8 months time.

We could struggle badly with this squad in the Championship. Just like we did the first half of this season so far. We could do well in the Championship with this squad. Just like we have the second half of this season so far.

Players will change. Some will improve with experience. Some are not good enough. Some will be more suited to the Championship.

Without reading the thread.

Are we fuck.

But it depends what you mean. We are better than last season. So we would be barely good enough to stay up.

That's what the thread pretty much says.
Which players are good enough to keep us up
