Championship play-offs: EFL likely to opt for six-team expanded format in 2026/27 ahead of general meeting

EFL clubs are set to decide whether to expand next seasons play-offs in a general meeting next month; The current format involves the four teams that finish directly below the automatic promotion places; The Premier League has some concerns that it may dilute quality

Take the best and most exciting league in the world and try and ruin it.

I can't see the appetite for it really. Does mean less dead-rubbers when 12th v 13th still matters a few weeks out, but we already have a huge gap between Champ and Prem and I can't see how this helps and can only assume there's a financial benefit.

Absolutely zero co-incidence whatsoever in my eyes that this argument has come about now you have got American's funnelling money into two of the divisions clubs I might add

It already works. Doesn’t need to change.

Why must these cretins always try and tinker with a product that already works so well?!

Saying that, it could go in our favour next season and beyond if we continue to make a complete pigs ear of things!

Make bottom 2 automatically relegated and 21st and 22th have a one off play off, winner stays up.

No I'm not being serious.

Smacks of desperation from teams like Bristol City and Preston in trying to get some kind of enjoyment out of football and I don’t think that should be allowed.

Self serving owners. No one is asking for this and it’s not fair for a team which finished 3rd to lose out on promotion to a team in 8th.

Nonsense

They've said it needs a majority of 13 clubs to be approved.

Without getting all 'Brexity', majority needs to be more than just over half. I don't care what the technical term is but it should be a higher % of clubs voting for it. If just 13 clubs vote for it, then 'nearly a majority' rejected it.

Needs to be a clear win on something like this, not something divisive.

It's the Americanisation of sport - Dead rubbers are fine, if you want your matches to matter then fucking win more in the majority of the season.

I'd imagine most clubs will vote in favour. Don't think it will be a close run thing.

tbh I'd quite happily go back to 3 up, 3 down but there's zero chance of that happening.

In reality how many dead games are there with the present system? Can't be that many games where neither team has anything left to play for.

I personally think that the bottom two and top two of exch division should be auto promoted and relegated and then places 3 and 4 from the top and bottom of adjoining leagues should play each other to see who goes up and who gets relegated

Would that reduce the parachute payments to say half distribution?

Should make it easier for us to get in them next season at least

All for anything that keeps more of the sides in the division playing for something longer in the season. Think a team in 5th/6th haven't gone up via the play-offs in a long time so don't think it really gives any sort of safety blanket.

Though people used a similar argument about losing to 6th place when they were first introduced, (for the record, I'm not in favour).

I also wouldn't be surprised if this is some bone they're throwing the Chsmpiondhip teams ahead of a restructuring (reduction) of parachute payments.

Didn’t they do something similar at one time?

In the first two seasons, the team one place above the relegation zone in the First Division, along with the three clubs below the automatic promotion positions in the Second Division, took part in the play-offs.[10] In the inaugural play-off final, First Division Charlton Athletic faced Second Division Leeds United but they could not be separated over the two home-and-away legs, so the tie was settled in a replay. Played at a neutral ground, St Andrew's in Birmingham, Charlton won the game 2–1 after extra time to retain their First Division status, while Leeds remained in the Second Division.[10][11] The following season, Middlesbrough beat Chelsea 2–1 on aggregate, and replaced them in the First Division.[12] The primary objective of the play-offs was achieved within the first two seasons, namely the reorganisation of the four leagues with 20 clubs in the first tier and 24 in the second to fourth tiers.[13] However, the popularity of the play-offs was such that the post-season games were retained and the 1989 play-offs were first to feature four teams from the Second Division:[13] Crystal Palace beat Blackburn Rovers 4–3 over two legs after extra time in the final.[14]

My only gripe would be that we should do it this year regardless of autos.

But it's also not fair a team finishing 3rd loses out on promotion to a team in 6th. Why is 6th acceptable but 8th is nonsense? We've had instances where teams with over 80 points have lost out to teams with 60-odd. 20 point difference over a season and the team with the lower total gets promotion. It's nothing to do with fairness, everything to do with adding more games and revenue.

Personally I'd love it if there was far more movement between the divisions, reducing the possibility of these closed shops and also making it more interesting for fans each season as you play even more different teams and get to go to a greater number of different stadiums. I'd be quite happy if even the top 25% went up, the bottom 25% went down and the middle 50% stayed where they are.

And while I'm at it, I'd probably also reduce the number of teams in each division to reduce the number of games that seem to pile up towards the end of the season due to cup competitions etc, often resulting in player injuries from fatigue. One game per team per week, give the cups designated game weeks and maybe even allow for a mid-season break in Jan.

Give it enough american ownership and we'll soon be heading for post season playoffs for the 1st and 2nd place too...

No point in having the season. Just play the play offs. Tw&ts.
I hope the Premier League refuse to have such clubs.

As it stands 12th and 13th have. A great chance of play offs this season.

Or wait for the American owned clubs to get to the Premier League and then close the league and end relegations

Imagine the football regulator would have a word about that.

What’s going on with them anyway?

The Birmingham owners will be the first to suggest this...if they're ever promoted.

Should make it a 24 team round robin playoff.

They do, but it's February. I would expect them too at this stage. In fact teams much lower down could still make it.
