At this level everyone needs to be at the races for 90 minutes. Shipley is one player who whilst he tries hard, does have similar attributes in Westbrooke as being someone who frequently bottles tackles and lacks any real physical side to his game. If he has been put on in a certain position you have to be committed. I think that frustrates some people and I noticed it being commented on during the game.

Zonal marking or not, I think some people are desperate to try and defend him that they are making themselves look a little silly.

Shipley looks right at the spare man here. He saw he was free and did nothing. Obviously you can argue other people defending the corner didn't do their jobs either, but you cannot argue that the zone just packed its bags and moved, which therefore wasn't Shipley's fault. Him putting his hands on his head is pretty telling I would say too.

I generally like him and his contribution to the club has been great. Our performance was also really good and I fully concur with people saying we didn't put our chances away being very costly. That certainly was the case.

Shit like this though, needs to be cut out. If we can do that and be a bit more clinical I'm sure we will have more highs than lows this season.
The way zonal marking works even if there were 4 blokes there he wouldn’t have moved towards them. That’s why it’s flawed in my opinion. We had 9 outfield players in the box defending that corner with the other player on the edge cutting out the short. Why can’t we afford to put defenders on the post and still man mark? Someone previously put that Hyam leaves his zone and goes to attack then all and that’s where Kalas gets in and I must agree. Can’t believe there’s a thread after one game calling out a player who played out of position and was called upon about 45 mins earlier than he probably was expecting. It’s 1 game, we lost to a side who will be in the promotion hunt come May and we outplayed them at times. Lighten up guys

We did not lose this game because of a mistake by Shippers. We had one cleared off the line and had other chances when we should have buried Bristol City by half time. There was another instance where if Walker would have squared to Godden, we would have scored. I don't see strikers being crucified for poor decision making. I don't think it's fair to scapegoat JS. There needs to be a collective responsibility

He didn't lose his man, we're doing zonal marking at corners. The ifollow I was watching was part of Bristol city's coverage, they had a player doing punditry and was saying we zonal mark and as a player he much prefers man marking.

But when the ball comes into your zone you need to deal with it, he didn't

It wasn't in Shipley's zone, it was in Hyam's, but Hyam moved forwards leaving the gap between him and Shipley, which their man took advantage of to score.
Surely the first goal was Hyams man as well on the left of the three? Giles was racing back but I’d have thought it was the left of the back threes job to be there rather than the LWB.

I’m wondering if Hyam won’t be the one to make way for Østigård.

Tbf this thread's moved on. I can understand why some blame him for the goal. I can't understand the "he's shit" mentality after one hour at this level. There have been question marks over him at L2, L1 and now the Champ. He stepped up both times before and at 22, I don't think he's reached his full potential yet. Time will tell, but he at least deserves time with us and has earnt the right to find out.

Too soon to be writing him off. He's coming through at a tough time, if we'd been stuck in league 2 for a couple of years he might be a first teamer by now. I'd send him out on loan personally.
Yeah I don’t think it’s the end of the line for him. But if he can’t compete this season I’d rather loan him out and get someone in who can. We’re back to two DMs again and they’re absolutely key to our style.

Fact is

he wasn’t committed to winning that ball for us 🤷🏻‍♂️
You don't even have to win the ball sometimes, just challenge and make it as difficult as possible for the attacker.

Didn’t we have this thread last year when he was playing on the left? Lynchmob where out to string him up that time too and then look what happened when he played in his natural position

He is only 22 players normally mature and are at their peak between 25 and 30.

To be fair, I seem to remember an interview where he says CM is his preferred position?

I think he played well when he came on at least until Hamer went off, as soon as that happened I admit he was poor but so was the majority of the team at that point.

The best part of Shipley for me is that he has an eye for a pass, he may not always pull it off, but he seems to see runs that our other midfields either don't see or won't risk the pass which he will (although he doesn't always do it in the right areas!)

Agree with this. He had a good first half. I like the fact he isn't afraid to take risks / try a pass.

There was talk of George Curtis not being good enough for the third divisionwhen we were promoted to the third division.

To be honest I thought the 1st goal was more of a clusterfuck than the 2nd. Both our wing backs and all of the 3 centre backs were either badly positioned or made poor decisions in the lead up to it. Doesn't make any of them individually crap or a waste of space, and they are no more worth hanging out to dry, than some are trying to do with Shipley.

The first goal was a catalog of errors, all 3 defenders were caught out imo, McFadzean got sucked towards a ball he was never going to win, leaving space in behind, Ostigard got sucked towards the second ball where he should have dropped off and allow the midfield to deal with it and Hyam gets caught between stepping up or going with the runner, in the end he needed to come across to block the cross. Giles didn't cover himself in glory either, felt like he was a split second slow in his decision making and he couldn't make up the ground,

No point hanging anyone out to dry, we just got caught napping at the start, these things happen, If it continues to happen then we have an issue and it will be addressed.

Did think both Hyam & Shipley could have done better for the second, would need to see it again, but the corner was within the 6 yard box, should Marosi should have come and claimed it? but lets not be too harsh on them just yet. First proper game in 7 months. They showed me enough, that we will be more then alright at this level ones fitness levels and the new signings get up to speed.

Yes he might be looking at the man BUT we're playing zonal. It's not part of that system to pick up a man, it's to mark your zone. He's doing that. If you look there is a line of four defenders between 6yd box and penalty spot. Then three in the penalty area marking their zones. I see you didn't put up the picture of their guy heading the ball which clearly shows he heads the ball where the left most defender of the three deeper defenders is standing as the corner is taken, making it his responsibility. He moves forward into the central defenders zone and both challenge a single player leaving the one free behind to score.

Personally, I'm looking on it a failure of the system rather than the individuals.

I seriously wonder how a lad who is “ one of our own” is consistently slated and criticised for his performances . It’s been going on now for nearly 4 seasons , 4 seasons in which he’s come into the side at a very young age and adapted to every level he has played at so far . He’s never been the best player in the team but he’s an integral part of it
He’s 22 and having to step up again , for me one of is massive attributes is his adaptability . He had a superb game tonight and I for one hope he makes the step up again

The 2 goals conceded from corners I'd think are more of a coach/tactical issue. It looks like we're marking zonally/being instructed to more or less defend the width of the goal.

That being said if Ostigard times his jump better most of us probably do not bring up the issue.

Final point on Shipley, I was half expecting him to struggle this year. I know it is early days but alongside Hamer yesterday I thought they both played well against some established names with PL experience.

We should remember, Shipley is still only 22. He could still be in our under 23 development squad. But he’s got 2 promotions in 3 years under his belt already, Not to mention a vital goal in a Wembley play off final!
And he cost us nothing! Keep up the good work son!

Some fans seem determined for certain players to fail? Shipley is one of our successes. Good enough to play in the Championship - but unlikely to be poached. Has a great eye for the defence splitting pass and not afraid to take on the shot. A team player and potential future captain in my opinion.

Considering he is not playing in his natural position Shipley has played really well in the first two games, made a really important block last night as their player was about to strike for goal.

City fans love someone to knock with Burge now long gone it’s Shipleys turn they even seem disappointed if he has a decent game . Put Shipley up for sale there will be a queue for him. In my opinion he will blossom again in the championship as he did in division two and one.
