Ran 38:18 in the 10,000 metres at Nuneaton on the track last night.

On the face of it, a poor time.

But that distance on the track really is a grim undertaking...... i was cut adrift from the lead pack almost immediately, and there was a guy on my shoulder for 5 or 6 laps, but he was breathing hard already and fell away...... so ran much of the race completely alone, ultimately finishing about 8th or 9th out of 16.

Was just slipping off the target pace by a second or two each lap..... which doesn't sound much, but then you get to halfway and you're 25 seconds down, you can't just pull that back.

Had the inevitable tough couple of km around 6km point, where i was shedding time at an alarming rate...... but hesitant to blow a fuse trying to retrieve the situation with such a long way still to go.

Finally let it rip with 2km to go and pulled back a bit of time (at 8km i was hurtling worryingly towards 38:30 or worse)....... but was never going to pull it back under 38mins.

Really is intense racing on the track. Its soul-crushingly hard mentally to be running for close to 40minutes but not going anywahere. Getting your time called out by the officials every lap, and knowing there's a second or two slipping away each time, but you can't really do anything about it..... and you're not going to suddenly get a nice easier downhill section or change in rhythm...... it just goes on and on.

On the other hand, its flat, consistent, and conditions were pretty much perfect (ok, it was warm and humid, i was utterly drenched after, but as good as you'll get in this country, ie it wasn't particularly windy and it wasn't pissing down)
Fair play, 10k on the track does sound grim. We're you lapped? I once did a 3k track race and was lapped by the leader, twice! To be fair I think he lapped everyone upto 3rd place and found out after he was on the British Olympic team for 3k steeplechase. Still pretty demoralising when they're ringing the bell for the leader then showing you the 2 laps to go board 😅

Yeah i was lapped 3 times by the winner who ran 32:40........ was also lapped twice by a clubmate and training partner who ran 34:00 (suspect i'll be hearing a lot about this tonight at training!!)

However i also lapped a couple of guys several times who were well outside 40mins.

I was supposed to be running another track 10,000m tomorrow night at Nuneaton...... but yesterday's visit to the physio has put paid to that, and i need to lay off the hard running this week to let my hamstrings recover.

8.5 miles this morning including 6x800m efforts on a quiet, flat, and straight pavement section near me. Love to do my efforts.along the seawall near me but so busy with tourists it makes it impossible. Did 39 miles on the bike yesterday too but still not feeling totally recovered from Covid a week or so back. Will try a Parkrun on Saturday but think ill still be off the pace for another week

Ran a different Parkrun this morning, - Parke - which is on National Trust grounds in Bovey Tracey on the edge of Dartmoor. Its a fantastic undulating woodland 5k with a couple of extremely steep climbs. Still feeling chesty after Covid so still not quite at it but worked hard to finish 3rd, in time of 20.55

Tough training session last night.

9 x 400mtrs on the track. Rest periods starting at 2mins and decreasing by 15secs each time.

Mathematicians will note that this means the final rest period between reps 8 & 9 is only 15 seconds.

This is a brutal one. I aimed to start out around 76secs and try to hold the pace.

First 7 reps were all 75-76, then i dropped to 78's for the final two.

The final three reps of this session are really tough.

Encouraged by that, and seeming to be recovering fairly well from hamstring issues..... i had a rush of blood to the head..... went home and entered the Home Nations 5km in Cardiff at the end of the month.

Can't imagine i'm in pb territory, but will be nice to see exactly where i am.

Ran 10k this morning (54 minutes), bit of a climb just into the boundary of the Peak District national park.

I noticed a new feature with my watch in that it measures cadence / virtual oscillation and a few other things, all seem to be going in the right direction.

Paid for the Runna app for a half this year with a view to doing a full one next year. It's well worth the money with the discounts they've got going on.

I've got a code to try it for free for 2 weeks...DM me if anyone wants to give it a go.

Seventh race of the year on Saturday - Lakeland Trails Keswick 15K.

I`ve never ran anywhere around Derwent Water, so I`m really looking forward to this one.

I`m in the non competitive group of runners and will be very happy if I finish below 2hrs, with all of the elevation and technical sections along the way.

I'm up to the Lakes the following weekend for the Lake District Mountain Trial.

You don't actually know where you're going until after you start, when you recieve your map with some numbered checkpoints to reach in order.

I'm doing the short course, so all i know is the start location, and that i'll be out in the region of 3 hrs (although could well be more if i get lost)

I've done this race twice before (i did the Classic "long" category on those occasions....... first time i completed and did well, the 2nd time i failed to finish as i couldn't find one of the checkpoints).

I expect on the short course i'll be one of the quicker runners..... but that means nothing on this type of race.... navigation and route choice are more important.

Got my charity place confirmed for the London marathon 2026, so continuing with/picking up the training. I’ve been averaging 55-60km weeks over the last 3 months (some higher or lower depending on work and life commitments). Trying to pick it up to be consistently above 70km now, preferably above 80km if time allows.

Did the first proper long run of the marathon training block this week - 27km in 2hrs, which included 12km at 4:10/km ish. I found this comfortable. Will probably look to try and do a 30+km run every week between now and the marathon to build in the endurance.

Continued with my usual interval session today of 6x 1km at sub 3:30/km with 2mins rest in between. This is my worst type of session - much prefer a long continuous tempo block.

Onwards and upwards.

How was the 5km?

I've had one or two issues with my achilles and calf, so elected not to go to Cardiff for the 5km.....

Had the race been in Coventry i'd have probably risked it.... but Cardiff is a long way to go when not feeling fully fit.

Have had a serious look at my training, and pulled some of the milage back, replaced with some cross training, which seems to be helping, and i'm now relishing my hard sessions, rather than merely surviving them.

I have entered the "Friday Night Under The Lights" 5km in Battersea Park on New Year's Eve...... last year i didn't have a quick enough time to enter, so had to do the Open Mile instead...... but this year i've managed to run quicker than the minimum standard (17:30) so have been able to enter the 5km.

My aim (possibly over-ambitious) is to have a bash at making the qualifying time for an England Masters Over-40 vest next year....... even if i don't achieve that, hopefully the training will see me knock some more time off my 5km in the Spring.

I watched Ben Parkes run this one and it looks a great race.

Yeah its a good setup down there. I did the Mile last new year.

the Podium races are even better IMO...... with the Podium Festival in Leicester in the spring being the best.

Tough club session on the sports fields at Warwick University last night.

6 minutes
3 x 200mtr hills
6 minutes
3 x 200mtr hills
6 minutes

A solid effort, and was pleased how much energy i had to kick off the tops of the hills on my 6 minute reps (which i did on a hilly circuit)

Parkrun down to 26dead at Bedworth. Quite happy with that as it's a tough 4 lapper at the moment with a good hill twice and a good incline 4 times. I think in a few weeks I'll be ready to give myself a test somewhere flat and fast. Redditch or Tamworth most likely. Really pleased how comfortable I feel after 2.5years not running.

There's one in Braunstone Park in Leicester that's not bad.

How many hours per week are you tending to be out running? This is my biggest barrier for doing a marathon, i struggle to fit more than 3 runs a week in
