Bit late to the party but I’m also running London on Sunday. I ran it last year as well as Berlin marathon.

I also ran Brighton marathon three weeks ago.

However I don’t say any of that to be immodest, but more so, that despite the previous marathon experience I feel in bad shape for this one. Not sure if it’s sub conscious complacency, but training hasn’t been ideal and my diet has been shocking. Other than my first ever marathon this is the least prepared I’ve been (even outside of the running element, I only booked my hotel tonight!).

Are those doing it staying down Sunday night?

I’m up to doing 10km a few times a week again now, including PBs, and will start to increase the distance again soon. It’s very much welcome after a year out injured.

Need to get proper sized up for running shoes though, my feet seem to swell up like mad when running and I get pins and needles.

Do you use compression socks? they have been a help with me

Not tried them before but will give them a go, cheers. The last pair of runners I bought were a half size bigger than my standard shoe size but after 5km or so I have to undo most of the laces and tie them around my ankle to relieve it a bit.

I've just about come to terms with being injured but the last couple of weeks have been a real struggle mentally after putting everything into it for 4 months. I've decided to get to the start line on Sunday to experience the crowd and adrenaline, see what the start routine is etc. but I'll most likely bail pretty quickly and go to the pub to drown my sorrows properly for the first time in nearly 8 months!

I'm doing London, first time.

Paranoid a cold is around the corner. Also it's gonna be warm!

That’s entirely normal, it’s a known thing; maranoia. This is my 6th and I still get it. Also the feeling everything is tight and aches, and you’re about to pull a muscle etc. All normal! But trust you’re training and you’ll be absolutely fine.

Don’t give up. I know it’s tough - and a marathon is 100% more of a mental challenge than a physical one in my view.

Worse case you have walk, walk/jog, walk/run, or any combo of, you’ve still achieved the distance. You’ll be surprised how many people pull up injured or just haven’t prepared so end up walking it. Point is, you won’t look odd if you end up just taking your time.

Also, the key thing is to enjoy it, fully embrace the experience. The crowds are incredible. I hated my first one and since then I’ve made a conscious effort to just take it all in. Obviously I always have a rough time in my mind, but my priority (especially LDN) is to soak it all in.

I know that’s all a bit cliche and I hope doesn’t sound in any way condescending! You’ll both be part of the 1% by Sunday evening

What waves are you both?

Not condescending at all!

My ego is fine with jog/walking, the problem is ~30 mins of walking is painful atm. I'm going to give it a go but my hamstrings are in a very sorry state, that's why I'm going to soak in as much of the atmosphere as I can at the start then anything after that is a bonus. I haven't completely given up on finishing but limping for 6+ hours is very different to running for 4 😅

I'm running Manchester so the added bonus is that if it does become too much my flat (and favourite pub) are a tram ride away from most places on the course.

Anyone do Cov Half today? Was a bloody hot one, managed a slightly better time than id expected but way off what ive managed in the past. Rying to train to HR zones just seems to have made me slower for some reason.

Heat in London was disgusting. Ended up about 25 mins slower than the target. But happy to get home. Might try cov next year

Did the 10k.

Didn't realise just how hilly this city is in parts!

The hill on Radford road just as you get to the finish is especially cruel

Especially as its so close to the finish

The 10k went up past the Brooklands. Never realised how steep that is until today!

Finished London in 4 hours 3 mins. (Strava time was 03:59) but ended up running half a mile longer which was disgusting!

Saw a few cov banners and had 3 cov fans behind me in the queue yesterday picking up the numbers. So funny, of all the queues in that place. Just a shame Luton had score a min earlier
Sorry just to say this was London, not cov half!

Ive only just spotted your post as it was exactly the same time as mine weirdly!

Well done mate, sub 4 is fantastic in this weather. Obviously plenty of cov fans at the half yesterday but there was also a disappointing amount of "up the villa" down Tamworth road for the guy in one of their shirts. I made sure i beat him.

Those in race battles are very important to win! It was great seeing a few cov banners in the London crowd

That was my third London and by far my worst. Hit a wall fairly early and then got cramp so not ideal!

The heat was mental. I’ve never seen that many people walking / with medical staff.

Crowds are amazing as always and help a hell of a lot!

I got round in 4 hours which is about 20 minutes slower than last year which just shows the impact of the conditions today.

Well done anyone who ran today, whatever the event, as those conditions were really, really tough.

The numerous pints I consumed afterwards certainly helped though.

Well done all...... had a few from my training group do the Cov half (i think one came 6th), and there were three from the club at the London Marathon (quickest time 2:30)

Talking of hot weather..... its now less than 4 weeks til i go to Sicily for the European Masters Mountain Running..... weather forecast is for high 20's (although starting at 2000mtrs i expect it will be markedly cooler up there). I'm looking forward to the forecasted warm weather this week for a bit of acclimatisation.

Although i believe Etna has been having some mini-eruptions lately so it might be warmer still.

It's very important to rehydrate afterwards, glad you took this seriously

I managed to finish Manchester yesterday, legs held up and got me round in 5:43 with a mix of running and walking. Didn't realise how many people come out to support along the way, I see what people mean about the boost if gives you now. Big shout out to all the people who were spraying their garden hoses over the runners, life savers in the heat.
