I’d be
At times you can see exactly why Palace signed him.

Yet you can also see exactly why he can’t get a game there.

You can see why Glasner said he can’t trust him. He is no where near Premiership level.

Same time he’s still really young. Only 20. But he shouldn’t be starting games for us. He would be much more effective coming off the bench to turn a game.

He isn’t what we need right now
I disagree.

He gives us an unpredictability and ability to go past opponents that we previously didn't have. Considering that we desperately needed options on the wing, what kind of player do you think we should have brought in?

He was frustrating today, but do you genuinely think he hasn't had a positive impact since arriving?

Whatever the problems are, Romain Esse now being part of our squad isn't one of them.

Very technically gifted. Absolutely no football sense.

Doesn't keep position, doesn't track runners so seemingly can't or won't follow tactical instructions, and just wants to try fancy flicks allthe time even when they aren't necessary. Looks good on a highlight reel when they come off, really annoying for the 90% of the time they don't and he loses possession.

More suited to that tekkers shit than proper football at the moment.

Was worried by him yesterday

Some excellent stuff, but then unnecessary flicks and dangerous dribbles out of defence and was tackled and dispossessed a number of times, looking for a foul, when clearly no foul had been committed

I prefer EMC. Think Esse would be better coming off the bench to be honest.

Very up and down performance from Esse yesterday. Brilliance mixed up with naivety and some stuff that could have got us in trouble at the back

Esse = technically brilliant / positionally clueless

Quotmyself from yesterday’s match thread. I first said this about 20 minutes in and repeated it several times throughout the 90.

No doubt he could win you a game but his lack of positional sense and general awareness could also cost you a game.

I know Sakamoto has repeated critics on here as his stats aren’t great. But he absolutely impacts a game more than Esse.

The occasional flick can’t outweigh the bad sides.

He’s an enigma. Could possibly try him at 10 so he has more freedom as ideally you want him on the pitch.

One of many things Lampard needs to get right.

Tatsu has more discipline. Esse is just doing silly things in dangerous positions.

I’m sure a few games ago you said Esse should be ahead of Sakamoto and that he’s at best a squad player now

He was exactly what we needed yesterday but didn’t have a great game, you have to take risks against these boring everybody back teams risk free footballers like Dasilva and what MVE has become are just not needed, you can add Grimes to that pair as well.

Agree…to some extent. But I’m not sure what back heeling the ball out of play when it’s easier to pass it simply, adds to our performance.

He was probably watching rudonis highlights.

Difference is he created 2 good chances and probably had our best shot of the game.

Esse has shown he lacks positional awareness and taking risks in the wrong part of the pitch. On current showing Tatsu has more discipline.
He turning out to not be all we thought he would be. Hence on current showing he would be more effective coming off the bench to impact or turn a game.

Yeah…I agree he’s got loads of ability and looks like he can really unlock defences.
Unfortunately too often yesterday it looked like it was ours he was trying to unlock.

Not sure about this take either.

Nothing he did really got anywhere near costing us yesterday.

We have mve and jds costing us goals most weeks but I guess mve does a fist bump every so often.

Yeah some of his stuff was unnecessary, he was nowhere near our worst player or the issue yesterday. Meanwhile you go over to other threads and players like wright had a good game because they looked "up for it". 🤣

Esse is the least of our worries.
And if the 'looked up for it' comment refers to my posts, I never said he had a good game, I said he was awful.

No it was in general rather than specific.

Just watched the highlights back and I didn't realise how good the pass to torp was at the time.

When I was referring to him being up for it I was just on about him putting himself about and getting involved in needle with the defenders which 2nd half I could see quite clearly from 13.

It's not always the case that he even gives you that but other than that I wasn't impressed.

Sorry no I didn't mean what you said specifically. In the ratings etc etc all how he had a good game.

Watching the highlights back, the rebound after esse had a shot he fucked it up but was offside anyway.

Just weird how a young lad who tries tricks (and yeah not needed all the time and don't always work) is getting people saying he doesn't care or he's a wanker. Yet he's scored more goals than anybody else since he's been here 🤣 he created the most chances yesterday (closely followed by tats).

It's just a bit weird.

Tbe boy looks to take on his man and put a cross in. The trouble is the personnel on the other end of them fuck it

I was thinking in particular when he tried to beat about 5 players just outside our box, following a corner. Oxford offered nothing but he won’t get away with against someone like boro I suspect…maybe he won’t try it against them.

We’ve seen a lot more of the likes of MVE and Dasilva so know what they can offer (ok MVE more than Dasilva). It’s only 3 or 4 games in for Esse…I wouldn’t be at all happy if he plays a quarter of his games for us like that.

Having said that the campaign for Brau and Esse on the left starts here!

So if he does it against Boro then yeah it's more likely to get punished.

No point making up scenarios to slate him

Clearly Rom is a very talented boy, but sometimes it feels he does tricks for tricks sake, and it's annoying.

Yesterday, Tats retained the ball fairly well and got the ball in, delivery was a bit suspect at times, yes, but at least we got the ball in, Esse just needlessly gives the ball away trying to be too elaborate.

Hopefully we start Tats and EMC against Middlesbrough, presuming EMC is fit, and then bring Esse on to cause havoc later in the game.

Tats also fucked about and lost it a couple of times yesterday though?

You just know the moaners who say football isn't as good as it used to be and there are no flair players or stars anymore and everyone is just the same and athletic now etc are the same fans moaning when a kid tries a fucking trick in a game
