There were a few involved and when I look at the characters I'd describe it more as mass debating.

The responses from Rangers fans on this is deranged, you'd think they were Real Madrid. I kind of want us to sign Raskin now, I think they'd spontaneously combust.

Are they bigger than Spurs and Villa though? What metric do measure it on.

both get similar gates, have world wide fan bases and more importantly play in a bigger league and can offer more money.

Its completely irrelevant whether they think they are bigger or not anyway. Any Prem club could have any player they wanted from Rangers in a heartbeat.

Agreed. See Celtic getting poached by Southampton for Van Dijk.

I’m just intrigued at how a big club is measured nowadays.

More recently Ajer to Brentford too. I think big club is almost meaningless, Rangers and Celtic are both very big clubs historically there is no doubt but the league is dying on its arse and some of their fans are having a really rough time altering their expectations with it. As funny as it is because its the Scots i actually enjoyed football more when more leagues had strong teams in them but its just where we are. Honestly i think a top Championship team could take anyone away from Rangers if they met the asking price, pretending the could hold off Prem or Bundesliga interest is hilarious.

It’s almost like the league and to an extent Celtic and rangers have been left behind.

I don’t doubt that they have worldwide following. But the only metric you can look at that on is social media followers (I know o know - not the be all and end all) both sides lag behind even Leicester City.

If i was judging what makes a club 'big' it would be a combination of...
1. Support, by that i mean active support (attendances)
2. History
3. Current/recent league status

I think all of that is swallowed up by financial clout though. Rangers are obviously a bigger club that Bournemouth but every single Rangers player would jump to Bournemouth in a heartbeat.

Betting suspended on Kevin Muscat...

If his teams play like he did they could be a shoe-in for a red card a game

As could the top half of the Championship. The Championship players who have signed for them in the last 5 years have done so as a step down in my view, it’s an admission that you won’t cut it at a decent level.

I agree with you, I think when you start getting to midtable territory the choice might not be clear cut, but any Championship club with an ambition to hit the play offs, the player is choosing the Championship club more often than not.

Cantwell is a good example. At one point really looked a cut above the Championship, didn’t push on then bailed out and signed for Rangers. Got bored presumably but signed for a bottom half team, which will still be more interesting than 3 fixtures a season against Dundee

Which is why their fans are so amusing. They really don't seem to have adjusted to their current standing in the football world at all. It must be depressing to admit though as there's nothing they can really do about it, the league is what it is.

Cantwell only left rangers because he fell out with Clement.
So you've made a presumption that isn't true.

It doesn't bother me but if we heard, (and in the past we have heard), supporters of say, Bournemouth, who are a tinpot outfit who just managed to get on the Gravy train, talking about us in the same way, we'd rightly slate them

Well as a club they suffered a real fall from grace because of that tax evasion scandal, I sympathise a fair bit with it. Produced some great teams, great managers and in a football mad city on top.

It’s shit, but you can’t start rebuilding until you accept where you are right now. We had to do that in the fourth tier. I would advise them to stop spending millions on average Championship players and instead look to the continent or Scottish leagues to develop talent that can be sold at big profits for more reinvestment.

Happy to be corrected on Cantwell, but still, look where he ended up. My point above also stands, you have to accept where you are right now in the food chain.

You can dislike it, but you can’t deny it as they are.

We are lucky simply for the fact we are a football club based in England. We have the ultimate gravy train to aim for.

I think current status has to come into it at some point. A club can't point at its history forever without doing something in the current day.

I can't stand them so don't care one jot about their current shitshow.
But the tone of this thread is very much the sort of think we slate others for when we hear it.

The likes of Bournemouth thinking they're bigger than some genuine European giants because they managed to get their grubby hands on Sky's money isn't something to be celebrated in my book.

The Serie A bubble certainly burst to a degree but even then it's still not bad is it. Like it's not the SPL.

Scotland has a population of 5 million.
It's probably where it should be.
When it's clubs we're doing well in Europe and its players were going south and being part of some of the truly great English teams it was punching well above its weight.

I strongly doubt those days will return.

The thread is essentially a massive dunk on Scottish football. Which I’m on board with because some Scottish fans can be pretty insufferable, but as I have also said often, I find it sad that a proud and football mad part of the world has fallen this badly.

You're right it shouldn't be and I've already said above it's only funny because it's Rangers, much preferred it when leagues were more equal.
I don't think the majority of us are as deluded as Rangers fans though, we know Bournemouth are poxy but we also know as things stand that could have their way with us. Maybe not in January or anything as you'd think our players might want to see this through, but generally I mean.

I wouldn’t actually object to them entering our league system, we have enough Welsh clubs in the pyramid anyway. Would make for some cracking away days and Glasgow could easily support two top flight clubs.

Difference is with us v Bournemouth we’re effectively in the same playing field.
Scottish football is shrinking into the ether. The standing of the football is dragging rangers and Celtic down with it.

as the world moves forward their will eventually be people more familiar with the Bournemouth’s than Rangers, therefore increasing the worldwide fanbase.

I think you'd have to merge English and Scottish football entirely to do that. I have some ideas on how to do that fairly but I'm not going to bother writing a load of paragraphs that are probably cobblers on here.
Needless to say it benefits the Scottish clubs way more to be in our league system than it does our clubs them being in it.
