Been a week since the pubs have opened.

What's the verdict overall in terms of booking, what details you need to give away and the experience once you are in?

Quite good I’d say, staff all knew what they were meant to do and the host at the front explains what’s needed in terms of data. Just a quick contact survey to fill in on my phone. The menu was shorter than before but not many things missing from it.

Music being quieter was nice too

Very quiet in my opinion.

The mass stampede to pubs definitely hasn’t happened.

We were in Cafe Morso on Friday night and we were the only people in there.

Have to say The Yard was excellent. Electronic temperature check on the way in, marquee and heaters outside and you ordered your beer through scanning a QR code.

Carnage in the fat pug in Leamington opening night. Exactly the same as it used to be in the albany club the other day.

All nicely planned out but once you've had a few it's not happening. There was a one way system in the fat pug so where we were sat we had to walk to the far end of the pub, out the door, back down the path outside and in the back door to get to the toilets. Nobody did this. We were sat 5 steps away from the toilets. They checked our temperature on the way in and it was only table service.

Albany club was members only and they've put screens up at the bar and introduced a one way system. Again, not followed after a few.

It all comes down to people having to use common sense. Which goes out of the window after a few jars.

Wetherspoons profits drop 19% and its boss is blaming Remainers – Metro

I think it’s going to have more to do with people boycotting due to his action at the start of lockdown, wanker.

exactly. I used the City Arms regularly after the Brexit vote and even seen him in there but after his lock down antics he can fuck off.
That Neverspoons app has really taken off as well apparently.

In any case, is it a good idea to alienate roughly 50% of the population, higher proportions even for younger people who tend to socialise more? I wouldn't want his pubs to go bust as they employ big numbers and are generally in significant places but lol

Some chain would replace them, or the independents would become stronger in their place.

I'd shed no tears. Surely this pandemic has shown the worth of a good local with roots in its community.

that's what is happening with the neverspoons app, it basically directs you to the nearest independent pub to a Whetherspoons.

Such a bellend. Purely anecdotal but my dad and all his mates are boycotting the city arms and they all voted leave. Can’t believe I’ve even been made to type that sentence, it’s so completely irrelevant to why people are avoiding his pubs.

edit: The article is from last year and has nothing to do with what’s going on now. Leaving my post up anyway.

Saw this doing the rounds today, another example of what a dick he is.
In today's episode of "Wetherspoons is ran by cunts"

Offering pints for £1.29

"woah, how is that a bad thing"

Do you know how they are offering pints for £1.29?
Answer : £48m loan, underwritten by the tax payer - allowing them to undercut other bars greatly.

This means they didn't need this money - and are using it for a competitive advantage.
Which is against state aid rules.

Or, would be, if we were still in the EU
Wonder why Tim Martin wanted out so badly

Next up - they are implying it's because of the VAT reduction and passing it on

Two points
1) the VAT reduction does not apply to alcohol. So that is a lie.
2) Let's say it did - then if £1.29 is the price with 5% VAT, then £1.47 is the price with 20% VAT and the pints weren't £1.47

So, this is a lie. They've shored up revenue with this loan and will be making profits elsewhere (probably on their shit breakfasts) and misleading customers

This also plays in to make it look like other bars aren't passing on the saving. They can't pass on the saving - there isn't one!

We still operate under eu rules during transition surely and how can this loan be a breach of state aid requirements?

We have been to two pubs and two restaurants since they all re-opened, and a few friends have been for pints or meals at their locals.

The big takeaway for me is the lack of consistency. We’ve experienced face masks and table service, no face masks and table service, no face masks, table ordering but pints delivered on a separate table for you to then collect, to no masks, table service and taking your own drinks from the tray on your table.

The one constant has been taking details, but even so that’s varied slightly from taking everyone’s details to taking just one of the group.

Places have been quieter in my experience, which I’ve actually quite enjoyed. However, bar one, all of our trips have been in the afternoon where it would generally be quieter anyway. It also means people aren’t usually (that) drunk so the variant of the alcohol effecting their social distancing hasn’t come into effect at that point.

Depending how things go over the next few weeks, we’re potentially planning a few lads afternoon/evening drinks, so I’m sure my experience will differ then.
