The thing is people have set themselves up as being defensive of Burge so just can't change their opinion, same as thinking everything is issue's fault. It's clear he's not good enough.
It’s not about defending a player or changing your mind it’s hoping for the best and
It was one chance - the second Thomas chance was much harder and perhaps robins can explain why he plays a left player always on the right
omg should have scored both

No he shouldn’t - the second the keeper did well (versus the tosser in our goal who’d have lurched out and done nothing) and both chances were on his wrong foot - he’s not confident with using his right foot to shoot

I thought we had no chances in the second half?

Our keeper didn’t have to make a save until the 66th minute...

No he’s already tried to punch one in his own net.

Did their keeper make a save at all?

Very good first half by City and an excellent goal. Portsmouth were always going to be more difficult 2nd half and ground out a good result for them.

I thought we struggled in the centre of defence today.

A shame we came up short because even a draw may have just kept us in the play off hunt. But 8th is higher than the 12th I predicted.

To go to a place like Pompey , play them off the park for large periods for the first hour and come away with nothing because your keeper fucks up again is a little bit deflating to say the least .

Imagine how robins feels too
Not sure you played us off the park admitted first half you did OK. 2nd half we deserved it.

For large parts of the first hour I think we were much the better side ,should have been 3 up at half time , even some boos from the home end .Portsmouth never really looked in it until the hour mark .

Your fans afterwards seem to hold the same opinion tbh

I don’t begrudge you the win , you won because of our errors , which is part and the parcel of football , I hope you go up over Sunderland

I had no faith in burge anytime the ball came into our box and if I felt that way you can be sure the defenders felt the same. Good luck to the lad but his time at city must be up now. We need someone to command the box it's not the first time burge has flapped at balls coming into the box. Thanks for the memories Lee I don't think you are helped by our goalkeeping coach.

Both GKs made one save apiece. Having watched the highlights to reflect, how did Thomas not force a save for his second gilt-edged chance? Our finishing didn’t help, we had 9 shots, 2 on target compared to their 11 shots, 3 on target.

Their GK nearly outdid Burge by rushing out unnecessarily for the Thomas chance which he should’ve buried 1st half. Every Cov fan would’ve rightfully berated if it was our GK. This isn’t a defence of Burge, it’s just an observation looking over the game.

Neither GK was particularly busy, and their GK made a pretty big mistake himself and, to be frank, Burge was on another level of shaky today. I hadn’t realised he nearly punched the ball in his own net for their first chance. I thought he was beaten by a header...

True but I don't want to be like keegan's Newcastle. First and foremost be hard to score against

I agree, I’d prioritise a strong defence over a strong attack when trying to consolidate in a new league. We create enough chances to have scored a lot more than we actually have and that’s frustrating. If we can stop being so wasteful, we’ll be a playoff side next season.

I don’t really get the Keegan reference as it’s a little bit past my time, but assume it means scoring a lot of goals, but conceding a lot too?

Controversial opinion, but I was really pleased with the performance today. I thought we played good football but, as has been the story this season, no end product. An out and out striker is a must in the summer. I'm wary about getting rid of Burge. Yes, he is mistake prone, but so are most goalkeepers in this division. Better the devil you know I reckon.

Burge needs to go now, along with Ogrizovic. He is well past his sell-by date now. 35 years at the club is an outstanding service by anyone's standards but surely, at 61, his time must surely come to an end. Let's get some new blood in for the new season. (If we still exist!)

Agreed besides the Burge part. I just think it’s best for both parties for him to move on!

Why is an out and out striker needed when it was right mid/winger missing all the fking chances?

Fair enough. I'm not saying that Burge is championship quality, but I'm just concerned that we'll end up with someone worse haha....and before people say it...yes that is possible ;)

I'm talking more generally then today. I feel a big part of any promotion team is having a top goalscorer...something we have clearly been missing this season.

There is a thread on Sunderland forum of our match against Pompey , quite an interesting read!

They all start off supporting us loving the way we play, the pace the counter attacking , want to sign bright, call us bets team in lge on our day, say we’ll win playoffs if get in them, they get really annoyed with Thomas when he misses , start busing Shipley for weak tackles and spot burge is a liability, then hate Thomas a bit more and then end up hating burge big time!

You’re right, O’Brien as an example! A few people felt he was going to be a good GK after his first couple of games (myself included).

An experienced GK, like Stockdale, seems like a logical choice because we have such an inexperienced side. The more leaders we can add, the better.

Simply put outplayed Pompey today then as throughout the season a Thomas miss a Burge cock up and we miss out, two places require filling next season then ' up the league we go.....'

Great performance, disappointing not to get anything out of it. It was inevitable they would put more pressure on second half, they are not in a position to get automatic promotion being a shit team. If we had gone two up I think we would have got another (and we should have with the two Thomas chances and the Hyam header). Been a good season and some of you need to be a bit more positive. Upwards and onwards.
Agree.
Excellent skills runs and passes. Was really proud of a young team away in an intimidating atmosphere. Portsmouth were a more mature side that succeeded by lumping the ball upfield . If we could retain the backbone of this team we would have a good chance next year . Love to see Shipley going forward ,he’s a different player. Well played Robins and the lads
