The point wasn’t that his mistakes aren’t an issue... Our inability to finish chances is the main issue at hand. The theme of missed chances is a weekly occurrence and we nearly threw away our lead v Bradford shortly after missing 2 chances that were harder to miss than score.

We are still one of the lowest goal scorers in the top half despite scoring 8 goals in our last 3 games.

Of course it isn’t the main issue - you concede two goals vs Portsmouth you tend to lose. We could have conceded after 3 minutes

Agree with your other points - Thomas ultimately disappointing after arriving with such promise. We won't miss him as much as Eno when the pair return but the Burge issue really is a concern should Robins give him another 12 months. Unless we get Franco Baresi, Paolo Maldini and Franz Beckenbauer in as defensive coaches I don't see the issue changing for the better.

I’d love Bright to stay, and hope his ‘I feel at home’ statement means we may have a fighting chance of keeping him on. That’s the naïve optimist in me, but realistically, a Championship team ought to sign him.

You also tend to lose if you concede 4 away at Sunderland. They were there for the taking today, no question

Which was a freak result - we should have conceded very early and if had would probably have lost comfortably

We could’ve went 1-0 down, but didn’t. We went 1-0 up and could’ve went 2-0 up. How many times have we thrown away a 2-0 lead under Robins? Have we?

I agree, conceding 2 goals away against a top 6 team tends to limit you to a draw, if you’re lucky. But, we’ve gone and missed chances when we’re ahead. At 2-0, I can’t see us losing, we leave with at least a point which keeps us in contention. I’m sure if you were to ask Robins, he’d say you’ve got to take your chances in that position.

It was one chance - the second Thomas chance was much harder and perhaps robins can explain why he plays a left player always on the right

But we didn’t. We also drew to Luton away in similar circumstances, the first time they dropped any points from a winning position this season. That was a game where we were lucky to come away with a point and were distinctly 2nd best.

Today, you would’ve thought we were team chasing automatic promotion and overall, we were the better team. The more clinical team won, and they deserve the 3pts for that.

I disagree you could tell they were the more intense team in the second half and we are a very poor mans arsenal - pass pass pass pass oh lose possession

Simple question: should Thomas have scored that open goal? Yes or no.

We had 3 clear cut chances today, that’s more than enough chances to at least get a draw away.

No it isn’t - the keeper had no save to make in the second half

I’d agree with that statement for the final 20 minutes, not the 2nd half. I appreciate teams who threaten from set piece and Pompey and Luton do that well, they generated enough set piece to trouble us. Their 1st goal was their 1st shot on target and as a home team, only had 3 shots on target, scoring 2. The neutral wouldn’t have thought they were chasing 2nd place.

To go full circle, we should’ve been 2-0 up in the first half. To sum it up, the Sky Sports tweeted the miss with the caption ‘Taxi for Thomas!!!’

Partly because Thomas couldn’t hit the target when he was through on goal...

Answer the question, should Thomas have scored the open goal opportunity in the first half to put us 2-0 up?

Although that kind of play is pleasing on the eye, at this level it ultimately leads to mistakes, especially against physical high pressure teams like Portsmouth.

By your own logic we should have been one nil down in 3 minutes

If you had given the full stats of both teams any neutral who knew anything about the game would know they were chasing second place

Was the ball over the line when Davis cleared it?

The Portsmouth fans were possibly the best performers on the day. Bastards never shut up and definitely have some effect on the opposition.

Yet in the first half they were pretty clueless. What's more frustrating is the impotence at home to the worst teams in this piss poor league because we're still trying to hit on the counter...against teams trying to hit us on the counter. We should've had 3 by half time today. Can't really say that for the recent displays against Oxford or Brizzle

The difference is the back line - Pompey had some football players - the teams like Bristol and Oxford just have clunkers ( not footballers) who don't come forward and create the gaps - we never got behind them - today Hiwula , Baker and Thomas were everywhere with all the room = open game

Davies cleared it off the line and I’m sure Portsmouth fans would’ve bemoaned that miss had they lost/drew. But, they didn’t and it’s not quite the same as missing an open goal from inside the box.

If you know as much as you like to think about football, then you’d readily concede that had Thomas scored to make it 2-0 the game would’ve been different, and that the miss cost us dearly.

True but I don't want to be like keegan's Newcastle. First and foremost be hard to score against

I do think our set-up has a lot to do with this. We play home games like the away team which means we create very little against teams content to settle for a point. The way Barnsley came at us last month was a great example of how to pressurise the away side. They tonked Oxford, we lost 1-0.

Irrelevant.

If Thomas scores
If the goal line clearance ended in the net
If we defended the first corner better
If burge hadn’t flapped and fumbled for the second
If if if

In all honesty, overall we have probably surpassed my realistic expectations over the season.

Thought we looked pretty sound to win on our 1st half performance today. Missed opportunities let us down a bit. Had we gone 2 up I think Pompey would have thrown caution to the wind & we would have created many more chances.

Not posted for a long time but after watching on TV today the observations are these. You need a strong spine in any successful side, unfortunately Burge is way to inconsistent for this level, add to that a forward line that has suffered from not being clinical in front of goal and you fall just short. Saying that though if he can recruit a finisher and goalkeeper in the summer then we will go all the way next season, this league tends to punish naivety and though young the lads will be a lot wiser next season

The first Thomas chance he's just got to take it right footed but allowed the defender back. The second chance after they'd equalised, he actually used his right foot to dink the keeper but wide. Thomas seems to try get every attempt on goal in the corner. Just hit the target
