Players who maybe should have stayed (1 Viewer)

I loved Thommo as well but it wasn't moving for Blackburn that halted his career, it was the fact he was made out of biscuits.

Thought of very highly and fondly from Blackburn as well, got into the England squad (without getting a cap) if i remember rightly.

Cracking little player.

I personally thought he was overrated, touch of the 'best player in the playground' about him and his discipline was questionable.

Then again, having watched some of his goals again he was too good for the level we were playing at.

Davenport, was on a par with Dawson when both were signed by Spurs. Wonder how his career could've faded so badly, he's only about 30 now and last I heard was quite literally playing for a pub team.

Robbie Keane left before he was ready for a big move.....especially with the language barrier and more. Life abroad must be lonely when you go by yourself and can't speak the language.

Keane was always going to Inter from the second he left Wolves. He was never really our player.

The guy is a grade A prick. Not at all surprised what happened to him TBH.

On topic: Kirkland is the one that sticks out for me. Had so much talent and promise then fucked it all up by moving to Liverpool. Although from what I gather he was sold rather than left, there's a Linnell piece about how he was there when someone came in to tell Kirkland to pack his stuff as Liverpool had had an offer accepted.

mick quinn never understood why he went to greece, maybe got the munchies for a proper moosaka.

Mick Quinn got sent packing with just his boots in hand by Big Ron for no other reason than he did not like him, thats what he told me anyway!

Davenport, easy. Never got a game so his development stopped dead. Like with Thommo, I'm sure he had no real say in the move, club needed the £££ so they got sold well below their value. In his last game for us he looked as good as any centre half i've seen play for us.

Side issue - Thommo was a Premiership player. Anyone who doubts that has a bad memory. The most excited i'd ever been by a signing, thought Houllier had lost his mind letting him go after he tore us to pieces for Liverpool the season before. Convinced he'd have bagged some England caps if his body would've held up.

Your sarcastic tone of a response implied they shouldn't have left because they simply "enjoyed just sitting on a bench".

Oh and how dare I counter your sarcasm "fact-fuelled" and well thought reponse with some actual facts about what each player got up to. This is an internet football discussion forum where people discuss football. Ground breaking, I know.

Feel free to point out where I said we got relegated in 2009. All of them went to play at a higher level with varying success including promotions and appearances in the Premier League on a higher wage. All of which they wouldn't have achieved had they "stayed at Coventry City like they should have" (what this thread is actually all about).

Ask 99.999999% of professional footballers what they would rather do and you will soon realise your "I would rather play every game and be loved by the fans, than play a handful and be "1 of those players" that gets forgotten after a short breath. Personal choice." is an absolute fallacy in modern day football. Even then, I'd argue playing in promotion winning sides is better than playing for us in the late 00's, its an argument I'm very confident of winning that one actually.

Its a short career to these guys so they try and make as much money as possible, which is human general nature.

The issue here is they all evidently had better careers than if they'd had stayed with us unless:
a) You think everyone that plays for us is a fan and loves the club as much as you and I
b) They don't see their job as a, you know, job
c) They were deluded

Like I said, Sky blue tinted specs.

You were suggesting that leaving the club in 2009 was a good decision based on us being relegated and having issues in and post 2012? Hardly great facts.

We are arguing about different things really. You think they were right to leave because they got a bit more money and got a promotion medal, which I agree pays for a nicer house and a medal looks nice on the mantelpiece.

I don't blame them for leaving, however they hardly did much after leaving .... I think they should have stayed because they could still have got those things (if the club were prepared to fight to keep players and sign some better players in other areas to show a desire for promotion). They would have also been top stars and fans favourites within the club. After all you don't go in to a clubs great history based on a handful of appearances and a medal.

Like you said - that is modern football, which is a shame.

Fuck all to do with tinted glasses though ...... It is something called an opinion.
