I'm gonna try defend kast here... First yellow was a yellow. Second one the adrenaline is kicking in and he's enthusiasticly dived in from about 8 yards to presumably block the clearance. It was comical but it wasn't sinister. The ref could have easily given him a final warning to calm down. He'd been on about 6 minutes. Having said that I totally see why he went. It was reckless and comical.

Not sure if that defended him or not
10 just for the passion. How often do we bitch about bottled tackles on here

Not going to give ratings to because I couldn’t watch half the game
Marosi: nearly let in a shocker, was put in a tough spot for their first goal and kicked it right at their player.
Dabo: don’t know, but doesn't deserve stick for the sending off it was very harsh.
McFad and Rose: Shakier than normal, certainly sounded shaky during the iFollow blackouts, McFad error for their third goal.
Mason, Kelly: Fantastic
Westbrooke: Too passive and tentative at times.
Shipley: don’t really know to be honest.
Jobello: Meh, sounded like he should’ve done better defensively for their second goal, struggled a bit
Godden: Great assist, great performance from what I saw.

Kastaneer: 0
Baka: Anonymous except he might have gotten the first touch on the third goal, I genuinely can’t remember who McCallum threw it to.
McCallum: 8, probably will start at RB against Gills.

Robins said tonight the sending off was really harsh... Perhaps I was right in defending the slide

Rose can play right back and Hyam CB - Westbrook ideally will be left out and we have no natural wide right option

Our squad is paper thin

We’ve got a first team squad of 22 players, that’s not the case. That figure isn’t including the likes Eccles, McCallum, Bapaga and the other U21s, nor Ponticelli.

We’ve got to contend with a few injuries and suspensions and we’re hit thing now. But a squad any bigger and we’re dealing with senior players wanting to get game time.

E.g. Ogogo, JCH and Brown last season.

I would agree with you if you were to say we needed a couple of loans to fill in.

anyone else noticed how good Mason is when he's left 2 on 1?
Noticed Saturday how many times he came away with the ball in those situations and he did it a couple of times towards the end last night when we were under the cosh.
Early days but I think POTY is going to be a shoot out between him and Godden.

We have Wakefield who is a natural wide right option. He's back from his injury and played 67 mins. for the U23's on Monday evening, so he might be available - it might depend on how he reacted to playing again.

Marosi 4 - Some good saves but at fault for 2 goals
Dabo 5
McFadzean 5 - at fault for a goal
Rose 7 - sloppy start but recovered well, great finish
Mason 9 - MOTM, never stopped running, was unbelievable in the last 10 mins
Kelly 8 - great again
Shipley 6 - some good passes
Westbrooke 5 - goes missing too much
Jobello 6 - struggled to get into it
Godden 9 - brilliant, never stopped running, won numerous headers, great assist
Hiwula 7 - great finish, but in and out of the game from then on

Kastaneer LOL
Bakayoko 6 - didn't do much
McCallum 8 - did superbly out of position

I might be wrong but feel a few are being a bit harsh on Westbrooke with his 5. I thought he was one of our better players before being subbed to make way for McCallum. He's not going to be everyones cup of tea because he is relatively safe, but he keeps the ball moving and also created a great chance for Godden with a lovely ball into the box. Although some of his set pieces weren't great, there were at least two well-thought out set-pieces that we very nearly scored from. Not saying he was fantastic, but I thought he was decent enough and 5 seems harsh.

It was the first game they were put under any pressure, and they looked very dodgy, hopefully they will learn from it.
Most defences will look dodgy at times at Pompey this season mate but yes I agree at times i thought Hyam’s calmness would be better suited.

Just out of interest, I also thought the central defence looked very dodgy against Southend, in the last 15 minutes when we were put under pressure, Southend were gifted 2 or 3 free headers and should of scored.
I know we are a new defensive unit and are still getting to know each other etc, but I think there is some training ground work required before saturday, but I think I've seen enough positive things to be encouraged.
The annoying thing is, as good as their strikers are, we gifted Portsmouth all 3 goals last night.

Agreed I’ve just watched the goals back the keeper looks suspect with their 1st & 2nd mate Jobello not tracking his man for the 2nd was just not good enough.Could of just been one of them nights but anymore of that I think Hyam comes in and stays there tbh.

it's a league one defence, there are going to be moments and games when it goes wrong.
In general we've been good defensively under Robins.

Like you say work required on the training ground but you can't coach players to stand up in adversity, as a group, and grind something out of a hopeless situation like they did last night.

Unfortunately keepers kick was awful then the follow up from that mistake he was rooted to his fine for the cross. Should have had that all day long. Second goal as well.

I'll put it down to a bad night defensively on what was an absolute freak night of football
