I think we need an upgrade at CB and of the two Kitching is the one to drop out IMO.

No but I think the way we play leaves us open to the counter sometimes , plenty of keeper mistakes thrown in too .

Burnley didnt concede 16 just because of their centre halves

Wright always creates some opportunities and also worked back well enough.

Simms was shockingly poor

At some point th is week I’ll go back and count how many goals conceded can be pinpointed on shots the keeper should save or mistakes. I reckon it’s into double figures this year

This system is open; we're going to concede goals playing it. It's not necessarily the personnel. Sheaf being back and looking his old self also helps us, because he screens the defence well. That's a big thing that we've lacked this season.

Thomas is a top defender at this level, imo, and Kitching, who's a good progressive centre-back, compliments him well.

No that’s true. But I think that means you need even better individuals if you haven’t got a system. I agree getting someone in who can set up a back four would be the biggest bang for your buck. Don’t know how likely that is tho.

The biggest issue we’ve had last 6/7 has been a keeper with no confidence

But as you’ve shown even outside of those games our defensive record is poor. I agree with Evo how we set up under Lampard doesn’t help but we seem to have a higher than average number of mistakes and slack passes from our defence compared to most. The stats show our individuals aren’t particularly pulling up trees compared to others in the same position.

Conceding 1 goal per game, when you’ve played each of the top 5 in that time is not poor by any stretch.

Conceding 16 in 13 (the stat you posted) would be 56/57 over a season. We conceded 58.

I also posted we conceded 12 in 12 when they both played with Dovin, when we played the entire top 5 at the time. That’s 46 over the season.

Would be interested, but not interested enough to go find out, what the xG was there. Anecdotally it felt like we rode our luck a lot and Dovin kept us in games rather than us looking particularly solid. And we don’t have Dovin got another 9 months or whatever.

I honestly thought how low the bar was for him today was hilarious. Fair fucks he did nothing wrong and pulled off a couple of great saves but at times he was getting rapturous applause for thinks like picking up a ball rolling slowly towards him and managing to pass it to someone three feet away. I mean I get why because these aren’t things that our last GK did every time, but still funny.

Elated! Thought Wilson, MVE and Thomas made a massive difference. Sheaf was everywhere today, Grimes composed as ever.
Wilson and Rudoni the obvious stand outs for me.
Great cameo from BTA, really pleased for him. Obviously i know he wouldn't be able to sustain that work rate for a long period, but i thought it was the perfect time to bring him on, Boro were starting to step forward, his pace in behind was just what we needed as they began to tire. Clever move by Lampard.
Thought the ref would have blown for a foul on the half way but he let him go and all credit to Rudoni for keeping up with him.

Whatever happens now, credit to Lampard and his staff, came in and changed the mood in the dressing room, instilled some belief and turned us around.
The players love him and it shows.
Also credit to every player who has played their part in pushing us up into the play offs, even with all the injuries, we weren't hindered, a great run to get us up there, and managed to hold the spot down in the end.

Simms had tired their back lines quite a lot. Played the target / hold up man pretty well and gave them a a physical challenge. Not quite in full beast mode, but pretty good.

BTA played his very different role very well, making the right decision for Rudoni’s second adds some lustre to the performance.

Callum who?

More than the season hopefully, can you imagine Grimes, Hamer, Rudoni, Wright and Gyokeres.
Champions.
Wont happen unfortunately unless for a benefit match.

Grimes is rushing in to try and rob players at times which he was not doing when he had to stay back more.

Haji wasn't anywhere near as bad as 5, his defensive game was good, he skimmed the far post with one shot, had the ball at his feet in the area quite a few times resulting in a few corners and low crosses into the box, though nothing came of them. His low point was going for a shot when he had an easy pass to Rudi near the penalty spot.

Simms did some excellent work with his back to goal, especially in the first half. His lack of technique cost him a couple of times when trying to get shots away, but I thought he did a good job for the team.

Wright's decision making was off, that's all.

Yeah Simms played his bit, obviously nobody is happy with his goal return but he does occupy center backs. Said it many times on this forum it is really knackering playing up against a bloke the size of Simms. Not a bad tactic to bring legs on against tiring defence
