Have to say some of his other photographs are stunning. I wish mine turned out as good as those.

I started to hate highfield road towards the end and wished for the new age stadium. A bit like a reasonable looking girlfriend that you dump for somebidy who turns out to be a total nightmare.

the grass is never greener literally!

Great picture but it's important that history doesn't get misread. Before the "Wolves game" both us and Wolves were both already promoted. What was left to play for was the status of Champions. That didn't happen until the last game of the season when we beat Millwall 3-1 at home and Crystal Palace beat Wolves at Selhurst Park.

What an amazing atmospheric photo. From the island at the Howitzers club and up through Hillfields. One of my favourites. Thank you.

Best thread ever and all of the comments just show what a passion we all had for our whole club back in those days. The stadium was ours and a stronghold for all of us. A place that we had a oneness with and a belief in. Sadly all gone and if I ever win the Euro millions I will buy all of the flats and houses on the site, demolish them and build a replica Highfield Road.

I remember the 1969-1970 season average attendance around 32,000 at HR - floodlit games - how green the pitch looked, the smell of Rothmans menthol ciggies and frying onions from the burger vans. Watching from the Kop the whole West End (we never called it the West Terrace) holding sky blue scarves aloft and the roar if it was a big game and we simply won a corner - you could feel that as well as hear it.

I, and I'm sure many others will hold you to that pledge. Good luck with your initial quest. Just one thing tho - once you've got the lolly and have obtained planning permission, please, please sort out the toilets at the top of the Kop.

Two games always stick in my mind the Wolves game and West Ham in the league cup. Brilliant days, everything was so rosy, the only way was up, wished we never left the place. All our troubles started w it's the sale of HR

Just found this one from an old football grounds book I had. Did anyone ever stand on that death trap that was the Crows Nest?

Had a lump in the throat seeing these pictures and memories. Reminds me of what we used to have in Highfield Road and what we could have had in the Ricoh and we lost it.

This atmosphere could easily be replicated in the Ricoh and even better if we were in the Prem. Our return back to Coventry last year is proof of that and the atmosphere would have been five times better if we had owed the stadium with better owners and management.

We can only dream now

Thank you so much for that Joy. I stood in the exact spot the picture was taken from with my dear old Dad for many years. So happy to see the image, yet it so nearly brought tears to my eyes.

I'm pretty sure I was there with my Dad for the very last match before they made it all-seater and you could no longer stand there. Against Leeds if I'm not mistaken, and the PINK printed a great big photo of the terrace as an historical record. They cut us out of shot by about a yard, the b***ards!

Of all the decisions during the Richardson era, leaving HR must be the worst.

Remember when they did the face in the crowd? If your face was circled you could claim a prize, just a faint memory not sure if it was the CET or the program.

We are a Million miles away from this. Last century. Ancient history. Now it is all about plodding along and waiting for a final JR decision. Clowns talking about a stadium at the uni or in Nuneaton. 18. In the third division. Loan players. Manager who is lost. Rugby team as leading sports team in Cov.. Gone is the hope, the passion, the dream....... Just looking forward hopefully to a nil nil against Rochdale.

The Telegraph's recent series of 'On This Day' pics has some great pictures with HR as the backdrop. Particularly the West Ham league cup semi (36k attendance) and Derby 4th round in '74 I think (reported as 41k but might be less).

The Crows nest, An extension to the concrete bulk of the Spion kop made from wooden slats with bushes, shrubs and garbage underneath.

Still amazes me it was still open for 3 seasons after the Bradford fire.
