If BTA is playing those three positions behind the striker there’s room for another striker TBH. Not where I’d put funds but if it’s a free agent it’s a matter of who comes up I guess. Trust the manager and it might just be bodies in for training and cover until Jan.

Tbh I really don't think any funds used to pick Bamford up will affect anything we want to do in January. But I agree BTA seems to be considered for the other 3 positions, leaves a spot up front. If Frank is in, I'm in.

I meant more given a free choice striker is quite far down the list of my priorities. But with free agents beggars can’t be choosers and if someone comes up who can add something even if it’s just a body with a pulse I’ll trust the manager. I have a sneaky feeling we’ll drop some proper cash in Jan if we’re anything close to where we are now.

We will regardless I think, there will be a lot of sales in the summer if we don’t go up.

I agree with you on Jan, I reckon we drop the cash for the final push.

I think more likely loan to buy players capable of playing in the Prem when (if) we go up.
If he is signed then I think this will be partially because he has the experience not only of the Premiership but also of getting promotion from this division with Leeds. It looks like a common sense temporary measure to boost a smallish squad.

I get what you mean but he was on 70k a week at Leeds so is going to want top money. Not sure we need a 4th striker when we only play 1 up unless Frank has decided BTA is a permanent winger /10 going forward.

People always assume because a player was on X wages at a previous club, it means they wont accept anything less than X wages at a new club. Its ridiculous and simply not even true.

Players accept news deals for less money all the time. Rashford has signed a deal to play for Barca on loan for 25% less than Utd were paying him is just 1 example. He couldve sat on Utd bench for 100% of his wages and still took a pay-cut to go out on loan and play.

Callum Wilson is reported to be on a pay-as-you-play contract at West Ham after being on around £110k a week at Newcastle.

Do you think when we were in L1, we matched Villa's wage for Joe Cole?

The bloke is currently not being paid. Hes towards the end of his career. We're 3 months in to the season and he's still without a team. Beggars cant be choosers. The ball on any contract would firmly be in our court. We dont need another striker, but it would be nice. So he signs what we offer him, or he carries on training without gametime or moves on. Simples.

£69,000 a week should do it then 😁

So do you think he will accept 5k a week then? No one is saying he's demanding 70k a week but when you have been on that money you aren't going play for a tenth of that 3 months later. He will want big wages.
We signed Joe Cole on loan so Villa would have paid most of his wages.
Wilson is allegedly getting 25k a week basic and 50k appearance fee. 75k a week for 6 or the 9 weeks of the season so far. If they play a midweek game as well he will be on more than he was on at Newcastle.

If Lampard thinks he would bring us something that we need I'd be happy. He became a bit player for Leeds but they walked their way to the title. Lack of goals in the last few years? Look at the career goals for Thomas-Asante. After just 12 games he has flown past what he got last season.

Cole was signed on a free transfer a little while into his loan spell.

We INITIALLY loaned Joe Cole, he then signed permanently. He played 7 games on loan from Villa and 15 as a Coventry player. And again, as a L1 outfit, im sure our wage offer was a fraction of what he was on at Villa.

Also, how much Callum Wilson is earning depends on where you read. Ive read he's on £6k a week, rising to £45k with bonuses (goals, appearances, etc) which if he isnt playing or scoring, £6k is a BIG drop in wages!

Re Bamford I must admit I wasn't keen on the idea when he became a free agent. But we have two months to assess him. He has two months to get fully fit which is longer than a pre season.

Frank Lampard is in a good position to assess if he can add something to the mix. His experience might be useful even just on the training ground or in the dressing room.

Why does he have 2 months to get fit? Can’t we sign a free agent at any time?

They said on the Sky game last Monday he was on 50k appearance fee which was the rumour why Nuno hadn't played him the week before.
None of those are the point anyway. Bamford is going to want big wages for us. Not sure we are going to spunk even 15 k on a back up injury prone striker.
I actually think Frank is actually just doing him a favour and letting him train with us.

If a 32 yr old experienced striker like Bamford, who WILL score goals signs a deal until the end of the season on 15k per week, I would be delighted 👍🏼

His record over the last few seasons casts a lot of doubt on whether he will score goals. Especially when we have two strikers who are the top two scorers in the league. Even Simms has a better scoring record than Bamford over the past few seasons.

Though if youre looking at a player to bring on with 15 to go, to be an outlet, somebody to hold the ball up and relieve pressure at the back, bully defenders, and occasionally chip in with a goal, you choose Bamford over Simms surely? Simms has impressed me this season, but fuck me is he too nice at times. If Bamford is coming on to do Simms' job, then why are we worried about his scoring record? Its not like he's replacing a 20 goal striker? If we're 2-1 up, 15 to go, backs against the wall, and need an outlet, he does that job better than Simms imo.

Depends on what kind of mood Simms is in. When he's fired up he's as much of a handful as anyone and someone you'd hate playing against. But when he's being timid and playing within himself he's infuriating.

Give the age of the two I'd still rather persevere with Simms.

Would choose Simms all day long.

The longer Bamford is rocking up at Ryton the more chances "its just to gain fitness" as the only reason become less. Both parties are looking at each other and if both like what they see adding an experienced low maintenance Bamford is a no brainer.

He will have to show he fits in and still gas something to offer. If the coaches dont see it or they think he upsets the group balance he will be gone in weeks.

But the longer he s here and the quieter it gets something is in the offing.

Exactly, what sort of mood he's in! You dont want a player that can play well.... if he's in the mood! If you need geeing up everytime you step on the pitch to be able to play well, maybe football isnt the career for you. Outside of the occasional off game, you should be in the mood and ready to play to your maximum EVERY time you pull the shirt in! And thats Simms problem. Hes a good player when he's in the mood. When he's not, you might aswell play with 10 men.
With Bamford, you wont get many goals (same as Simms) but you know what you will.get, and it wont be the Jekyll and Hyde you get with Simms.

If I've remembered right, we waited until the window had closed before signing Paterson last season.

That allowed both parties time to look at other options before committing.

So, for example, if Wednesday are allowed to make signings in January then a move there could make sense for him and them, and off he goes.
