So it seems this evening has reinforced the fact our squad depth is lacking.

We all know we need some outs to get more than the 2 in that MR wants. But who would take any of them?

For example:

Allen - you'd think a decent L1 side.
Pask - Same as Allen
Shipley - See above

Drysdale - league 2?

Hillsner, Jobello i think we would struggle to find any takers for them two.

Frustrating thing is the wages of thek lot combined could get us a very very good CM or CB for this league ( on top of the 2 loans MR has lined up)

We need to hope we stay relatively injury free, because can anyone really see us shifting any of these?

We certainly need some re-building, but realistically it's going to take a couple more years at least before we can realistically challenge for a play off place.
Given our budget restraints, we are having to take a punt on too many players, some work out, most dont. We got lucky with O'hare, we broke the bank on Hamer, Sheaf, and Gyrokres, but most of the punts failed miserably (kastaneer, Hilsner, Jobello, Mason, DaCosta etc)

I imagine Robins is trying to clear the dead wood:
Hilsner
Jobello
Mason (Now injured)
Allen
Pask
Also not sure what Robins sees in Da Costa seems to be a headless chicken.

Some of those players were handed a fantastic opportunity tonight to push their chances of a first team place, but not a single one came out of it with any credit. It may be a tin pot, meaningless cup, but it's certainly shown up some glaring deficiencies in our squad depth.
I'm interested to hear MR after that cluster fuck of a performance.

At least we have Godden, Kelly and Eccles to come back to bolster the bench.

Desperate for an Osti type CB

Needs a bit of perspective. Would've been nice to win, but most of those barely any game time and didn't even feature v Wolves let alone Forest. That felt like a preseason game and we could have done with winning to get them more game time. The biggest concern for me now us how are they going to be ready when dome are inevitably called upon to fill in the main 11 at some point soon. Lacking sharpness that only game time can deliver.

Would have thought we have been trying to move these players on all summer but seems no one is interested

It's striking a balance... You 'could' bin off 7 on that pitch, but replace them with 3 based on salaries... Then it's whether you want quantity or quality?

No point talking about the bomb squad... And would you have any confidence in any reinforcements based on our track record?

Just so much deadwood in the squad. Shipley, Allen, DaCosta, Hillssner, Jobello, Pask etc. are never going to be good enough for the Championship unfortunately.

MR knows this....getting rid is the challenge.

He will want those wages redirected no doubt.

Giving long term contracts to too many unproven players will come back to bite us.

Remember playing 11 of our 2nd choices is not the same as say slotting one of them alongside our best 10.

We know our pre season has been disrupted by Covid - I dont know about Northampton.

I think people like Maatsen, Reid and Waghorn deserve time to bed in.

Bright? Robins has said he is someway off so have to accept that despite concerns about his reputation.

Rose is also coming back and playing catch up.

Let's hope some are better than they appeared tonight?

We've come up from L2 to Championship fairly quickly.

You're bound to have deadwood in the squad when that happens. You can't get rid of it all overnight, it takes time. Particularly now when clubs are struggling financially.

There's no doubt Robins would like to offload a lot of the players mentioned in this thread but it's just not that simple.

Add in Godden, Kelly, Eccles, plus 2 loans and all of a sudden our strength in depth looks OK.

Only thing I can be arsed saying is some of the poor second string performers tonight will be better playing alongside some of our first choice starters. So it’s not all doom and gloom. We won’t be seeing a near whole starting eleven of bench warmers in any other game.

Hillsner etc not included

Dacosta is wishy washy, he had a good game against the likes of Sevilla but was shit v Forest

I say for now get rid of Allen, Shipz, Pask, Hillsner, and Jobello AND Mason if he has any takers, and replace them with the two loans and possibly two more reinforcements on permanent deals possibly would have to happen during January. Dacosta too in January if he doesn’t step it up.

Shippers can’t be close to the first team once these so called loans come

Some of that side shouldn't get near the first team again. The miss of Shipley was criminal. Da Costa looks to be done after only two games.

It’s scary that we are one CM injury off Allen or Shipley being in the starting 11. Surely a loan CM needs to be a priority

Assuming that the two loans will be defensive players I don't think they will make any difference to his place in the pecking order.

I would say though that he is behind O'Hare, Jones, Bright, and probably Allen in that attacking midfield role so I don't think he'll play much this season.

Kelly is due back soon though.

CB and LWB seem to be the priority areas so I think we'll have to make do with Hamer/Sheaf/Kelly/Allen/Howley/Shipley for CM until Eccles returns (which I think is a few months at least away!)

That’s great but Kelly is only ever fit for half a season. We desperately need a CM on loan before it’s too late and we are playing Allen or Shipley

Trust me I don't want to see Allen or Shipley there either, but I think CB and LWB are the bigger priorities.

Given our financial constraints I would keep Allen. He seems like a decent squad player and provides cover for O'Hare. He seems like a good personality to have around. Robins has alluded to this previously and giving him the captaincy tonight is another pointer. Even though he didn't come off the bench v Forest he was ecstatic at the end when celebrating with the players. You need these people around.
