Never said police can't be in the wrong.

CCTV in cells can protect both the police and the prisoner.

Like the way they are blaming the club when its the police and the useless safety committee that have made these rules.

The sad truth of it is that if the bloody rail link was working at proper capacity the vast majority of the Millwall fans could have been shunted up to the Ricoh in relays from the main station and back again on their merry way back to the smoke after the game, that way it would have been easy to police and they could have had a lot more tickets but that takes us back to that farce................

Yep.

They advise it, I am sure the club could go against it but then what happens with things like insurance etc if the club disobey advice from the Police etc and something happens?

Notts police have it right, whenever we play Forest away, it's all low key, they let you know they are about, but from a distance - not right in your face. Fairly friendly and hey presto there's no trouble at all, before or after. Not that difficult. Unfortunatley most OB actually want it to kick off, as per your fan that has finally won his case against them.

Imaging if the police treated muslims or any other group of people the way they treat football fans.

The same when we go to Leicester, and one or two others, probably the main reason everywhere I go away I am at the destination pre 09.00am now so you dont have to put up with shit.

Most football coppers are overly aggressive in my experience.

It is funny that Millwall fans think they are all innocent. Don't get me wrong, the allocation is poor, but there is a great chance of something kicking off Saturday than any game we have had at the Ricoh for years.

Some good opinions on this thread, thought I would add a few points from a Millwall perspective.

We do have a fairly good away support, however we are often restricted on numbers, this is generally on police advise and more often than not based on past reputation. A lot of Millwall fans feel hard done by because of what they see as a discriminatory practice, some certainly feel this way about West Midland Police. I think we have ended up with a paltry 2,300 (Coventry offered up an extra few hundred some weeks back) when we are looking to keep and hold on to the play-off place, I’m sure we could have added 1,000 + to that. This away following of course is largely due to our relative success on the pitch, it is worth noting that The New Den will offer the entire end to away support, upper and lower tiers, not sure how many this holds, probably in excess of 4,000.

Colchester the other week, would not give more than 1,700, I was one who had to purchase a ticket for the home stand, I was pretty much surrounded by other Wall, it was a dull 0-0 draw and to a man we were well behaved, and until near the end remained silent and sitting on our hands. The stewarding was very good and even handed, to the point where one bloke who was a bit the worse for wear got escorted to the away end, good management, they could have thrown him out on two counts.

Not all Millwall fans are sweetness and light, we do attract people just because of the name, sort of goes with the territory, noisy and tribal with a rep receives a certain amount of unwanted publicity along with some very differing policing tactics. As already said the Notts plod do it low profile, compare this to traveling to Leeds, we are the only club that have to collect our away tickets from the police (and get photographed) at a motorway service station, that means you can’t use public transport, all this does is add to feeling of getting the short end, it is actually pretty outrageous.

The thing is about supporting Millwall we attract opposition fans that want to ‘ave a pop, they generally get response, that just adds to the rep. Away at Sheffield Utd this season, walking to the ground with a police escort there were small groups of local youngsters coming at us from the side streets and across a waste land car park, it’s what happens, not looking for sympathy here, it’s just a fact. Plod were pretty good as these light skirmishes continued all the way to ground, this is the locals wanting a story to tell their mates, however it adds the policing headache and anti-Wall feeling. Had a long chat with a uniform on the way back to the station, seemed a decent bloke, told him about how The New Den was the safest ground in the country, he said they would hold the train to ensure we were off their patch. I thought - of course- as the song started about no one liking us , we don’t care, almost self for filling. Oh yeah, they gave us a midday KO that day.

Looking forward to Saturday and I have a ticket for the away end. COYL

Any "Holding Cell" or Police Cell should have CCTV installed and be switched on permanently. They are there for the safety of the person being held as well as for police safety.

Not sure if this has been posted elsewhere. No more tickets on sale at all I guess.

I wonder what the hell the police are telling them? Or what the police know/think is going to happen?

They are probably telling the club that they will have to pay for the extra policing required if they make the crowd bigger. Talk about the tail wagging the fookin dog!
They should have made it ticket only from the off, and only purchases accepted from Cov fans with a purchase history.

Maybe the 22,000 or so empty seats will now be occupied by OB!

A major part of the problem is the short-sighted design of a stadium that was built primarily for football matches. I.e., they should have built it with physical breaks (not just black netting over the seats) making it a proper away end, including all the exit steps and the concourse. The set-up at the Madejski is one that springs to mind. Then you can let them have as much of the away end as they want, a la New Den. It would be no loss, as it's always left empty anyway!

Same for us at Walsall two or three seasons back.
We got circa 2-2400 tickets but could have easily took 4k plus.
Unfortunately can't remember the increase in the Policing bill suggested to me by one of their Stewards, but it was significant, £10K minimum.
The question really is, in this week where one of our fans got some level of justice, although he'll never get those missed games back,
Can /Should football fans be trusted to police themselves, or do historical incidents dictate /prevent it ever moving forward to a Rugby style approach?

It's as if they are just waiting for trouble the way they are scaremongering Coventry fans and threatening Millwall fans with arrest if they come to Coventry without a ticket. Bloody hell we have just under 2,000 fans coming. Rangers v Celtic, Man U v Liverpool, Newcastle v Sunderland - all allow a minimum of 3,000 away fans, sometimes up to 10,000 without the fuss that this fixture seems to have caused.

We should have had a full allocation in the first place and WMP should do what they get paid to do, police a football match, it ain't that hard

Have thought the same. I wouldn't have given it a second thought before all this nonsense from the police. Our away end can take 6,000, there shouldn't be a problem with allowing pretty much as many away supporters as want tickets.

And aren't WMP basically saying they aren't competent enough to cope with a full allocation of away fans?

Yeah its totally over the top. It now feels like its inevitable there will be trouble and it could easily have been avoided.

There shouldn't really be any reason for trouble - Millwall fans will be placated by their side's handsome win while Cov fans will be too depressed to get angry.

I know a few older guys with ST's who are not going to attend now with all this whiff of unrest. I'm not sure whether this is WMP panicking over the numbers or SISU panicking over the cost of policing the numbers !

Surely they would make it back from ticket sales? Would it cost £20 per fan to police?

If Millwall want more tickets they should have offered to pay for the extra cost in policing

I would be interested to know the largest number of away fans that have been accommodated in recent seasons? What would happen if you drew Villa, WBA, Leicester or Birmingham in a cup game?

The cost of stewarding and policing within the ground is picked up by clubs, the police presence required outside the stadium is covered by the police alone. This is the case for any events, sporting or otherwise.

The largest numbers have filled the away end, 6 or 7k I think.

Sort of know that, and we are used to it, however it really begins to wear a bit thin in these days of CCTV, banning orders and even strong custodial sentences. I can almost forgive Colchester a couple of weeks back (1700) as they have gates of 3.5k and are a backwater of a club. Coventry with 35k capacity and at least the semblance of a championship club or beyond with a history and a police force that should be able to do just that, police.

Capacity is 32K. Your points are valid today but just supposing a good chunk of the 2000 or so do end up causing mayhem, then once again all the caution will be justified as regards to Millwall. I think the ball is in your court, the lads could come up and have a great day out { probably win the match }, sink a few beers, have a laugh and spend some cash with the locals in the boozers and get off back to London or it could go bad ways.............

Thing is if they gave Millwall another 1000 tickets they would all be in the away end
as it is they're risking them getting in the home end.
If we were in the playoffs and the club we were playing wouldn't play ball with
tickets, would we heed advice and not travel. Would we f**k.

No club has ever brought 6k (with the exception of West Brom in the cup) let alone 7k. Away end holds 5800 when absolutely full, but usually capped at a bit less than that.

Is this the suck Millwall off while acting like dizzy schoolboys thread.Bung it in one of the other areas.
