He’s a brilliant player. Wonderful first touch passing. Can break up the play very well. Very good in a dead ball situation.

He’s played brilliantly for Swansea for the past seven seasons; it didn’t do them much good. He was excellent for us today too; we drew 0-0.

Grimes is the biggest signing of the Lampard era so far. I think he’s played every game since he signed. I don’t think anyone can deny he’s an extremely talented player, but he’s been plugging away doing the same stuff in the Championship for seven years now, and he’s not going to be sold on for a profit. Does he need to do something different? Or do we need to adapt to his playing style?

Emc pretty poor bar a few flashes. When you pass bal backwards continually it can force you backwards obviously. Sometimes it's best to reset but we need to risk it more in attacking third

He played the #8 for a few minutes here and there in preseason and looked great. Shame we don’t have anyone else who can play at the base of midfield to try that out some more.

Grimes isnt the issue , I feel like our wide players never invert and spend way too much time playing far too wide leaving the striker far too isolated and often with nobody but rudoni to play off .

Its all way too predictable and thats not grimes fault whatsoever

There were lots of positives today in all areas of the pitch. The only thing we lacked was a goal. That would have changed peoples perception on the match.

Okay only a draw but our best first game points wise for several years.

'doing his role' should include taking a few more risks with forward and longer range passing imo.
He is a talented player who needs pushing out of his (long established in this division) comfort zone.
Someone needs to break our slow predictable routine. He could help a bit more with his ability.

Seems to be starting to get criticism for not playing both the 6 & 8 positions at the same time!

It's the classic position in a 4 3 3, (I appreciate that's very fluid nowadays).

I see the idea and better than than a fullback tucking in, I just think Rudoni drifts too much (for good reason) and that leaves just Torp or Sheaf to do everything creative down the middle.

I dunno, I just expected a bit better. Hull have had a lot of player turnover, new manager, not loads of time to get ideas across etc. But even then they've held us at bay by just doing the basics right and sitting in front of us.

We've kept the team all intact, another summer to work on stuff etc and it just looked like a continuation of what we had before.

I think the idea that it takes months or a whole summer for a coach to get their ideas across is cope TBH. You know within a few months what you’re getting and it’s not likely to change. We’ve got the sort of football Derby fans said we’d get really. I don’t think Lampard and the coaches know how to set up an attack. If Rudoni and Wright aren’t having a day then we’ve got nothing.

Great player and the biggest reason apart from Rudoni that we pushed on in the second half of last season, but not sure what those saw in him today. Very average and pedestrian imo, but as I said with EMC it's game 1, so let's cut him some slack.

Weirdly I thought he was decent, just shows how differently people see games.
I think a decent centre forward would make a world of difference to this team but I suppose weve got to work with what weve got

Pushes Thomas and Kitching wider, which pushed JDS and MVE further forward, which pushes the wingers wider and creates the overlaps on the wings, which facilitates getting crosses in… it aint hard to see the tactic if you pay attention.

What I'd have loved is if Tats shot went in very early in the game. Not only a great goal but would've really changed so many of tge posts on here and be interesting to see how we and Hull reacted. Hindsight of course, but small margins as ever in this league and could've been oh so different.

One of the problems in my opinion is that Saka and Mason Clark are not quick enough, Saka has a chance to put the ball in he cuts back which is fine in some circumstances but a lot of the time he then cuts back again and generally plays the ball backwards...opportunity gone, EMC does a few step overs and fools his own feet instead of being able to knock the ball past the defender then whipping in a cross, if those 2 are having mediocre games theres not an awful lot of chances created by others, I don't really rate Torp, he is ok as a squad player but not good enough to build any sort of team around him so Grimes is the main man he does play too deep at times but maybe thats to cover our centre halves who I think are quite weak.. We need better quality players to nail down important positions on the pitch if we really want to start dominating games but at the minute we have what we have and what comes with the players which seems to be plan A, hopefully Frank can try to get a plan B through to them but since he came here its taking a long time and any opposition manager worth their salt can obviously see this and negate what we are trying to do..lets hope we can get some new players over the line and hopefully start to see a championship winning side like we all want to see and be proud of..

Sometimes it feels a bit like the other players are being given a bonus for every time they pass it to Grimes. It’s crazy how often they’ll turn around and pass it back to him.

A player like Grimes is only as good as the passing options he has. Too many players ahead of him ran out of steam - not surprising for game 1of the season - but that limits his effectiveness. Probably best to take it for what it is and see how the next few games unfold.

I like Grimes, he’s technically ability, composure and reading of the game are brilliant.

I don’t mind the passing backwards, sideways as he recycles the ball really well and keeping possession is key.

However, appreciate it’s the tactic, but occasionally we have to switch it up. Let him play 5 yards further forward and as such he has to play more offensively. He needs players to make the runs, but for the first 60 they were (to a point).

If we were to get a Doyle/ball playing CB, that might allow him to play further forwards. He needs to influence games more higher up the pitch when we are struggling to break down a defence.
