Not going well is it?

Well, it's one thing to argue the relative merits of players and managers, but plain daft to be adamant about something that you obviously can't back up with simple figures.

Interesting article whilst not definitive.Top 5 or 6 clubs blow away anything else in this division. Whatever you define as budget. Interesting how bookies at start of season don't usually get it wrong.

We were 10th favourites at best at start of season. There's a reason for that.

Lambert says he 'hasn't spent any money' - but Ipswich Town's budget will still be big by League One standards

Thanks for this. Interesting, yes, but as the piece says, still "educated guesswork", and nowhere near the complete financial picture. It would be interesting to see the figures for the current season and also to ask a bookie how they rank teams.

I'm sure the bookies have their specialist analysts.
It's interesting to keep an eye on outright odds during the season. They usually arnt wrong (profit making business)and is a clear correlation between budget/resources and leGue odds.

Lucky to have you Robins. Take a bow.
We have a clear playing identity throughout the club.

Exact reason England are favourites for the Euros at a lot of bookies this year but only in this country.

Am I right in giving massive credit to Robins for developing what is a fairly unique system that is paying off big time at the minute. Obviously he deserves huge fucking credit. The question is, does anyone know of any other teams that use 3CB's, 2 wing backs, 2 holding midfield players, 2 10's and a striker? @Esoterica I imagine you'll know if anyone does

Bristol City won league 1 playing 352... But I've never seen a team play 3421 that I can remember anyway

Yeah, it's not a 352 in the traditional sense is it. People questioned Robins tactical ability, but he seems to find systems to suit players. Eventually maybe after a bit of trial and error sometimes.

Sheffield United in championship last year played a very similar 3-4-2-1 . Although their CB overlap wing backs. Which City’s definitely don’t.

Not meaning this as a pop at him, but half the time it seems that he accidentally stumbles upon the correct formula.

Good tactic and as I get older more and more the wise amongst us are the ones who are willing to rethink and learn new ways and attitudes towards things you thought you already knew

He really isn’t - Sillett transformed a relegation team in the top league to title contenders in three years

Yes they often give out championships for coming 7th I suppose.
With what Robins has going on in the background what he is doing is incredible & if he gets us up then our top three managers ever are Sillett, Hill, Robins with Harry Storer a very close fourth.

We finished 21 points behind the champions?

We didn't contend the title whatsoever but I understand what you are getting at

Some would say Bobby gould built the foundations of that team

Promotion from the lowest league would have been an inevitability at some point - teams of our size don’t stay in that league for long. Wolves in the 80’s were on a similar downward slide but came up instantly even with desperate crowds that season

You can’t really compare ratios and stats in the lower di idioms to the managers who achieved less in the top flight

We were third when we drew with Arsenal at the end of March

Gould signed few of the players in that team and most tellingly Regis has always said Gould virtually destroyed his career and Sillett made him the player he was

We slacked off after Easter, no title winning mentality, none whatever. They were on the beach from March onwards.

If we go up then If you can find any metric or justification which doesn’t show our top three managers ever being Sillett, Hill and Robins, especially considering the circumstances under which they all worked, then knock yourself out pal, you’ll be struggling.

Assuming you’re talking 1988/89 we never played with Arsenal in March let alone draw with them, it was 1-0 to us, late February if memory serves (I know cause it was half term). Kilcline scored with a penalty after missing one- get the basics right with this stuff. We played Liverpool at home shortly after and they put us to the sword winning 3-1 and it should have been 7.
