That’s the thing. It depends on your measuring tape. By land mass or per capita neither China or India are the world’s biggest polluters or anywhere near. Per capita we’re actually over twice as polluting as India. And we’re one of the better western so called developed nations.

Ok, then protest outside the Canadian embassy or Australian embassy. It's besides the point. I'm saying inconveniencing me is completely pointless and fucking annoying. And it ain't gonna save the planet.

Because countries tend to be run by elitist morons like Boris and Trump who see feathering their own nests as a priority over everything else.

A Tory voter taking the moral high ground on someone dying because an ambulance got delayed is priceless. People have actually died waiting for an ambulance because of the cuts in the ambulance service you voted for and championed.

Poll tax demos/ riots. I was there.
March against Iraq war. I was there.
I even happened to be in London during thr 1st XR protest with the pink boat at oxford street and walked my kids up the middle of regent street to see it.....

....but here we are....breeding more, consuming more, wasting more, killing more, starving more and caring less....

Financial self-interest and greed of those with wealth and power. There's a lot of money in things like oil and gas and those that have massive wealth because of it don't want it to change. If everyone uses renewable energy then they're stuffed so they're going to try and prevent it happening as much as possible.

Besides that they're incredibly narcissistic and as long as it doesn't seem to be affecting their nice lifestyle they don't care. As long as they're not around when it happens then it's not their problem. Some of the extreme narcissists probably think that a world where they don't have control isn't a planet that's worth saving anyway.

The timescales are there to get people to at least do something. Like with kids and you try to get them to eat one spoonful of vegetables. Really you want them to be eating ten times more but you know that's not happening so you go for what you can get even if you know it's not enough. I'm sure lots of people really think "we needed to do this yesterday!" but they know it's not going to happen. We're probably already past the deadline to stop some of the changes but being alarmist and saying "we're fucked" is just going to turn more people off.

Politically it's also difficult to change beliefs, customs and practices in a short space of time that would help towards this. Population growth is probably the biggest factor in this and many other world problems but you can't just go and tell people to stop having as many babies when culturally and religiously it is something that has been believed for thousands of years.

Then of course there's the cost and time of building the new infrastructure etc. We could and should be doing things quicker than we are but it can't happen overnight.

IMO we're WAY too late to the party and if we actually wanted to stop a climate catastrophe we'd have probably needed to start in the 90's.

That’s exactly the point. Something like 7% of all goods purchased in the uk were made in China. That in the stats will be on China’s books for carbon not ours. Same goes for every country in the world. China is the world’s factory every country in the world exports it carbon footprint to China by importing their goods.

It’s fair to say China could/should be doing more but then so should all countries and all individuals.

Very good point. Consumption is the driver, China aren’t just pumping out noxious gases for shits & giggles, they’re doing it because of other countries’ massive demand.

Yeah. I don’t think they’ve got the best strategy as it’s annoying people but it is getting media attention, it is getting people talking about it so it is sort of working in that respect. Should be more targeted though. Block Downing Street, no actual that wouldn’t work, he’s never fucking home. Vote for Boris get Judith Chalmers.

No I wouldn’t - if they had applied some glue at the back of a stand at ascot and had a laugh with the officials and then went home for tea it really would t be very impactful - your comment about children striking from school was hilarious

Mmmmm I think not

He said he acknowledges it’s a legitimate protest
He feels strongly about issues enough to take time to protest
He recognises their legitimacy in protesting in the way they thought would be appropriate

You lot just said they’re twats who need a kick in who won’t make a jot of difference

I didn’t even mention children striking from school I asked Cov mark what he would support his children doing and included an example of allowing kids to take a day off to protest. It was just an example

Surely if children were passionate they’d go every day to school and refuse to travel to any holiday ever and on holiday days go to Westminster to protest?

It’s not just finished goods either. China make something like three quarters of the the lithium batteries in the world so your phone, electric car, rechargeable appliance etc may say made in any other country but China but the component in it with one of the biggest carbon footprints in it probably was. It’s so short sighted and lazy to just say look at China it’s all on them. Again that’s not to say China couldn’t/shouldn’t do more.

It’s not a U.K. issue alone is it?

Of course it's not but does that mean we should just ignore it? China could say it's not just a Chinese issue. America could say it's not just a U.S. issue and so nothing gets done. Economies that are doing well as things stand don't want to change that. Those that aspire to that don't have the same resources to invest and see the big economies acting ecologically irresponsibly and think "why should we be different?"

Just because it's not just our issue doesn't mean we can wipe our hands of it and say "but what about them..."

The thing is this issue gives us (and every other country) the chance to become a world leader and have huge influence on the global platform. It's the biggest opportunity this country has had for a long time. But instead we're using our 'freedom' to go backwards.

It'd be far more beneficial long term for us to concentrate on solving the climate emergency and becoming sustainable that on protecting the financial services industry from regulation and leave us all at the mercy of their all-too-often reckless decisions.

The obsession with headlines and the such like is a load of old bollocks. A mass school walk out would be forgotten in a week. Without Chinese, US, and Indian cooperation, we're all pissing in the wind mate.

Governments don't have much interest in tackling issues that won't be resolved until long after they're gone from power. The only way to change that is for ordinary people to convince them it's an urgent priority for them at the next election.
