There's no chance for the first, he wouldn't have been anywhere near as left sided centreback. Milan and Woolfie are too deep and EMC completely MIA defensively pulls Grimes out and leaves grimes and Dasilva 3v2 so like Kitching he would have been pulled across, and wouldn't be anywhere near the player to follow in the shot, who ran past Milan in the right back area.

Second maybe, but given that our centrebacks zonal mark, it's likely like Kitching he wouldn't have been in the right position. The biggest issue there is letting the ball get through in the first place.

This isn't having a go at Lati or dissing him, he's been solid but it's too easy to say we prevent both goals if Lati plays. Whilst our record with him playing is outstanding, we have conceded goals with him on the pitch.

How did MVE allow the goal scorer to just pass him he's 25 yards from goal awful defending by him.

I'm not sure I'd blame either of the CBs for the goals - first one, it's a dangerous ball in and quite unfortunate with the combination of Rushworth and the post putting it right on Downes' toe.

This is a weird take. You’ve only got to look at the pic to see Woolf is very much at fault - from that starting position he can’t beat their 9 to any decent delivery into the box.

Lati had to take that red card because he dithered on the ball/gave it a way which he’s done a few times prior (Sheff U and maybe WBA).

He’s played well in this stretch but was only a moment or two from disaster. We went 2-0 up with 10 men and ended up winning the game so it was all sun and rainbows… had we dropped points the perception of Lati would’ve been much more harsh.

I also doubt we concede either of those goals with him on the pitch.

He doesn't switch off and ignore the runner for one, and doesn't stand ball watching for the other.

Notwithstanding our insanity at defending corners where we should also have conceded from one in the first half.

I don't overly rate Lati, but I dont like to shit on players when we're top of the league. I think i'd probably have him in over Kitching on current form, despite the fact I rate Kitching more highly generally and despite the criminal fuck up at Bristol.

Thomas is our best CB by a mile and I'd imagine the only one we'll see semi regularly in the Prem next season, the other 3 all do weird shit at times and I think at least 2 of them leave in the summer. If they leave off the back of a promotion, they leave with my thanks.

It’s really not what zonal marking is about. It doesn’t mean you stay rooted to one spot when someone is in your zone.

By definition it doesn't mean you mark the nearest man either

Watching that corner back the problem is that no one gets anything on it before it arrives in the 6 yard box, that's where the errors are really. None of Esse, Torp or Simms are making an active attempt to play the ball, they all just jump in place.

It is, it's about maintaining a structure and compactness and marking space.

I'm not a fan of it, it's why we have to bring everyone back.

If you leave 3 players up, you maintain a two man advantage in the penalty area but you have fewer opponents to worry about and your keeper has a chance of claiming the ball in. We're doing what we're doing because the Prem teams/Pep does it but don't have the positional discipline to make it work.

If it's not working defensively, gives us problems with the second phase and denies us counter attacking possibilities, I don't understand why we're sticking with it.
