I've pointed out fans of that football club are well documented for racist behaviour towards players at games (incl. their own) and are on camera, en masse, chanting 'f*ck the Arabs!' when in Amsterdam last year.

Knowing that, I can understand why folks might not want them in Birmingham for the game at Villa Park. I don't know who the MP is. If he was involved in the decision and he's an anti-Semite, then that's pretty f*cking grim.

Not surprised.

Forget what people are saying about Maccabi Tel Aviv fans causing problems, it would be a security nightmare trying to police the protests.

There's aggressive protests up and down the country every week. Imagine dropping Israelis into the mix.

Genuine risk of terrorism.

We host racist hooligan/ultra groups every European game week and don't ban them.

Horrible things being carried out in Gaza by Hamas currently.... loads of fellow Palestinians being slaughtered.

This.

There's a genuine risk of huge public disorder and violence (from both sides), which really doesn't seem worth it for a football match.

Oh so Israel is suddenly concerned about the welfare of Palestinians and the murder of Palestinians?

This 'article' is absolutely pathetic.

and if there was a decision to ban fans of a club that had a similar track record to Maccabi Tel Aviv on safety grounds, I'd get it. Not saying one or both would be the right decision, but I'd get it.

Maybe pathetic in your opinion mate but do a bit of research and you will see it's true (plenty of Videos on YouTube). For clarity I'm very hopeful that a peace deal can be made between all concerned

There are clubs that visit English football teams with far worse history of hooliganism.

We allowed a limited allocation of 800 Legia Warsaw fans visit Chelsea this year despite causing major disorder at Villa and Leicester in the past 5 years.

Frankfurt fans have been banned from travelling to Napoli for the same round of fixtures as this Villa game

Ajax fans were banned from Marseille earlier this season.

So clearly this is not some unprecedented decision - it's already happened twice this season.

It's obviously done on safety grounds and the notion it's some anti-semitic statement is silly.

I don't know if it's true or not, that's not the point.

The point is it's pretty horrific to see Israel now pretending to care about the fate of Palestinians after they've just murdered 70,000 of them.

Not arguing with you. Easy for us to argue points of principle on here, though. Another thing to be the poor f*cks on Villa's SAG who instead of planning for a football match have to figure out how to deal with and police a political, racial and religious powder keg.

It sets a precedent. Will we ban all clubs with ultra/hooligan groups?

I highly doubt it, as you said earlier there will be mass protests which are liable to kick off big time. It's a pretty specific set of circumstances.

Yeah definitely.

It's complicated because Villa are admitting our own security/police forces can't keep away fans safe.

Who sits on the SAG that made the decision?

Clearly if they didn’t have a reputation for violence then they wouldn’t have been banned, but I think it’s bullshit to just straight up ban any team’s fans from a game, and if you haven’t exhausted all options in terms of policing then you’ll inevitably open yourself up to accusations that something more sinister is behind it.

Football fans shouldn’t be treated as criminals by default, surely people on this forum have experienced enough bullshit during their own travels to know this.

If you're the leader of the country it isn't a great look to throw people under the bus on X. If he's talked to them, offered to support policing of the game and to stand with them to do all that can be done to have it pass as peacefully as possible, and to take some accountability if it doesn't, I'd get it. Haven't seen anything to suggest that's what he's done. Not great.

this feels like the crux of it. I haven't seen the SAG statement or explanation of the decision, so I don't know to what extent they have or haven't done all that they realistically can to find a way of making it work.

Has anything else happened in the Netherlands? I’m only aware of the one incident.

One thing I’ve observed on social media is that many of the Pro-Pal people have v little to say about Hamas executing political enemies in the streets this week*.

*Or ethnic of the Uighurs in China… or massacres of Christians in the Middle East and Nigeria.

Generally agree with what you're saying here.

The issue in this instance is obviously that Birmingham is made up of 30% Muslims.

That seems like an absolute tinder box just ready to ignite (from both sides).

The pertinent question is why is it a tinder box ready to ignite? They’re football fans going to a game, not the actual IDF.

Why this episode is so shameful is because it’s yet another example of sectarianism creeping into our society. We’ve brought this upon ourselves with mass migration. This wouldn’t have happened 10-20 years ago.

If a Ukrainian football team (or Russian) were travelling to the UK, we wouldn’t be banning their fans over ‘safety concerns’.

I know you like to blame everything on immigration, but football fans from different countries have been kicking the shit out of each other for decades.

I also have no doubt that a Russian team playing a competitive game in the UK in this environment would probably require a pretty serious security operation, and I’m not sure why you’d claim it wouldn’t?

Its odd that we now find oursleves in a situation where muslims dictate who can and cant go into an area of a city to support their football team because thats whats actually happened here .. in the uk
