The strange thing for me with Hillsner is that he is 25 turning 26 this month and was playing for a German 3rd division side mainly as an impact sub. I would understand if he was a few years younger and playing regularly at that level but not sure what they saw with this one

I wouldn’t mind if he started against Sheffield Wednesday if Bapaga doesn’t start because my god he cannot be worse than what we have

I understand he's talking about Hilssner. I was wondering who Hilssner cannot be worse than? As Hilssner is an AM I assume he's talking about O'Hare. Which would be a ridiculous thing to say.

He was on loan in the 3rd division after being signed by a top flight side. He also represented Germany from u16 to u19 level so it seems like it was a gamble to see if they could get him to live up to his potential.

The club's policy regarding oversees players has been a bit bizarre over the previous couple of years. Why the insistence on giving out 3 year contracts? Seems strange that none have been on 2 year contracts with an option of a further year in our favour. Would at least mitigate the risk factor more.

He was signed during the transition period, but, is the contract length a potential visa related issue?

I was thinking this but I doubt it.

I presume Hilsner obtained a Tier 2 visa and under the the regulations when signing oversees players the length of validity is three years or the length of the player's contract, whichever is shorter under the Tier 2 visa.

I'd quite like Bapaga to be used at the back end of games when tired legs start to affect the opposition but I think it's far too soon to be putting him in the starting line-up.

Throw a young player into the deep end too soon and you run the risk of stunting his development and affecting his confidence long term. As such, he shouldn't be looked at as a short term fix. Especially as it's looking likely he could develop into a highly lucrative asset for the club in the long run.

I agree, don’t want him starting yet. But if it’s him or Baka to come on I don’t want the latter.

He seems to get quite a bit of stick on here lately, but I still really rate Jamie Allen and thought he was good in his recent appearances.
Personally don't think I'd look to move him on just yet

We still had freedom of movement when he signed. No visa needed.

Also, 3 years seems fairly standard when we sign players these days. Imagine if we'd signed Hamer, also a relative risk, on a 2 year contract. People would be saying it's too short and we wouldn't be able to maximise value.

We spent over a million on Hamer. Hilssner could easily have been given 2 years with an extension clause

Would he not need one now though? Admittedly this isn't my area of expertise.

All transfers come with risk as you rightly say. However, Hamer was highly rated and by all accounts was sought after. With respect to the rest of our European acquisitions I highly doubt there was much of a queue for their signatures.

Surely a 2 year contract with the option of a further year in the club's favour would've been better suited for such players who were probably on paper much more of a calculated risk?

I think he’s most effective in the Hamer role, not behind the strikers and not in front of the defence. So I’d still want a better AM in to challenge O’Hare and give us the option of the box midfield.

Agreed, I'd happily keep him to try and challenge Hamer's position and keep him on his toes

I think there are two sets of regulations here
The government's regs from 1st Jan say someone coming in from overseas to work needs to have a job offer and earn a minimum of something like £25k per year
But then the football authorities have their own rules about the level the player has achieved - essentially only very high standard established players are supposed to be allowed
As Hilssner came in before football changed its rules he is ok
