There’s definitely players we can sign from this league and Hackney would be one of those players if Boro don’t go up. As you say, it can’t be a wannabe Championship super team.

Signing Hackney would most probably take about a quarter of our budget for signing players. We're not a rich club and will have to sign a fair few players to have a decent chance of staying up. We already have enough players in the 'could make it' bracket. The signing of Hackney would be more for a side like Leeds who would be looking at strengthening after staying up in the Prem.

And as for those who say about player resale values I say Grimes. Onyeka will be the same. We won't be buying to make money in the future. Staying up is worth about 100m a year. We will be after signings that give us the best chance of staying up without risking our future. Yes we will most probably lose money on a few of our signings, but we don't have the money to sign younger players who are already good enough for the Prem.

A perfect example of the kind of signing we could well be looking at would be Xhaka for Sunderland. Is now 33 but they paid an initial 13m for him. World class player coming towards the end of his career. Good chance they will lose 13m plus on him but worth every penny.

I think he's a really good player, but I am slightly concerned that he's a bit sloppy in possession. We won't have a lot of the ball next season, so when we do get it we need to look after it better.

this is the size of the task we're facing, Onyeka is a good player that is possibly better than the Championship. But he's got to sharpen up still for a relegation battle in the Prem.

Hopefully with a full pre-season he'll be up to it though.

First season up maybe you can carry him as you’ve not got much of the ball but I’d expect him to be one of the cheaper signings we make this summer. Esse & Yang are temporary, recruited to plug squad gaps. Not really a valid comparison & remember Esse has scored twice and got 1 assist that's not too shabby.

I don't think Woolfenden has been a washout, he has contributed and he is worth decent money in the transfer market.

In my opinion Markelo looks promising and he is 100% keeping Yang & Brau out of the squad, pity about Yang's time here it's probably a bit too early in his career for him to perform at the level needed.

With respect to Markelo, good planning involves picking up players for 1-2 seasons before they break into the first team. Bournemouth are a great example of this.

This was going to be the point I was going to make. Fair few misplaced passes and don’t get that luxury in the prem and for £8m I feel there’s potentially better and younger prospects out there.
Plus if we wanted to potentially throw a bit more money at that position it’s not going to be as easy to do now we have Grimes and Onyeka there when potentially like some have suggested we ‘could’ try to go for someone like Hackney if Boro don’t go up. When you’ve just spunked £8m on a player and the other guy is your lynchpin/captain it makes that look a lot less likely.

Even that Eric Martel that had been previously suggested we were looking at could have maybe been a cheaper, younger option that ‘could’ potentially give us more to offer in the long run

The club we beat competition for to sign Markelo from was some team in Abu Dhabi or something like that, didn’t really fill me with too much confidence we weren’t knocking off bigger clubs

Geezer has earned his move after what he's helped us achieve. £8 million is low end for the signings we'll make over the summer, not even convinced Onyeka starts when its all over. Good option for a year 1 Prem team though.
Also people need to stop trying work out how much we've got to spend and just enjoy it. Personally I think Doug could surprise a few.

I have worries about Grimes in the PL. As amazing as he is (one of the best I have seen in a Cov shirt), the pace will go up a level in his position. The only way I see him remotely having a chance is with Onyeka.

Yeh sure, you don't really get great value in the English leagues for sure so don't disagree. I guess what you do get is stuff you can't always put a price on like you know they are happy living in England for example. Pay someone Prem money and most people will be happy living anywhere though.

Hackney is a good player but the way Middlesboro fans go on about him you would think he is 20/21 not 24. He is older than Scott & Wharton who have both had a couple of years in PL and played for England.

That's not what I said. He may well end up at a premiership club, just can't see why we would go for him? Not played in the premiership. What we will be going for are proven premiership players to strengthen our squad. The likes of Harvey Elliott springs to mind.
