long way home

Winning the title changes the budget so id imagine Doug wants all secured and known before he moves on his options. They will have many listed targets and they will work through them if Tuesday goes to plan.

Some good players around and some that will not want to stay in the championship. Or on a bench in the prem, this summer will be an interesting one for sure.

Hackney is a local lad in Boro'. Championship player who will be re;uctant to move and we don't need him in that position. Rudoni is better equiped for the premier league. If we are to add quality in that position it will be an harvey Elliott or the like. We are not getting Hackney.

If Hackney was our player, we’d all be saying he can make the step the up.

There’s definitely players we can sign from this league and Hackney would be one of those players if Boro don’t go up. As you say, it can’t be a wannabe Championship super team.
Can/could/might.

Signing Hackney would most probably take about a quarter of our budget for signing players. We're not a rich club and will have to sign a fair few players to have a decent chance of staying up. We already have enough players in the 'could make it' bracket. The signing of Hackney would be more for a side like Leeds who would be looking at strengthening after staying up in the Prem.

And as for those who say about player resale values I say Grimes. Onyeka will be the same. We won't be buying to make money in the future. Staying up is worth about 100m a year. We will be after signings that give us the best chance of staying up without risking our future. Yes we will most probably lose money on a few of our signings, but we don't have the money to sign younger players who are already good enough for the Prem.

A perfect example of the kind of signing we could well be looking at would be Xhaka for Sunderland. Is now 33 but they paid an initial 13m for him. World class player coming towards the end of his career. Good chance they will lose 13m plus on him but worth every penny.

Different positions Rudi and Elliot are 10s Hackney is an 8

Winning the league doesn’t get you that much more money does it?

Does anybody think Brentford would have lent us Onyeka without the perm transfer upon promotion?

Personally I would have preferred a loan only but is what it is.

You’d hope he’s one of the cheaper signings we make. Maybe £6-7m

why he's a really good player and has plenty of PL experience
I think he's a really good player, but I am slightly concerned that he's a bit sloppy in possession. We won't have a lot of the ball next season, so when we do get it we need to look after it better.

this is the size of the task we're facing, Onyeka is a good player that is possibly better than the Championship. But he's got to sharpen up still for a relegation battle in the Prem.

Hopefully with a full pre-season he'll be up to it though.

Ultimately for all the taboo about saying it on here there’s a reason our only competition for him was a team 12th in the Championship. First season up maybe you can carry him as you’ve not got much of the ball but I’d expect him to be one of the cheaper signings we make this summer. You generally don’t get PL quality for championship money.

Birmingham were linked with every man and his dog and in any case, Valencia were also interested. He did a good job at Augsburg last season too. You ought to drop the weird agenda you have v Onyeka.

No one else was linked with Grimes when we were in for him and we were midtable in Jan 2025… was there a reason for that?!

Onyeka will be a solid squad player for the next 2-3 seasons even if we consolidated our PL status.

Esse & Yang are temporary, recruited to plug squad gaps. Not really a valid comparison & remember Esse has scored twice and got 1 assist that's not too shabby.

I don't think Woolfenden has been a washout, he has contributed and he is worth decent money in the transfer market.

In my opinion Markelo looks promising and he is 100% keeping Yang & Brau out of the squad, pity about Yang's time here it's probably a bit too early in his career for him to perform at the level needed.

Totally agree, Esse and Yang were just to be squad players and fill holes when we were down to just Mason-Clark and Sakamoto on the wings. Woolfenden has done reasonably well this season when he's played, solid cover really. If it wasn't for the re-emergence of Lati then he would have got more game time. Markelo was always going to be one for next season but we had to sign him early to beat off competition. He may be loaned out to the Championship to get some experience of the English leagues.

With respect to Markelo, good planning involves picking up players for 1-2 seasons before they break into the first team. Bournemouth are a great example of this.

It’s not an agenda though is it. Onyeka has weaknesses, short term he will be fine. But ultimately we’ll need better. As I’ve said - not 1 player in the current squad is indispensable.
