I agree, especially with the way he creates space and gets into goal scoring situations; that in itself can only be trained into someone to a degree.

He did show great tenacity to shrug off the defender and create the space for the shot in the first place, but I’ll still maintain, that what he does with the ball (shooting angles etc) does need some work.

Again, I don’t think Wright realises what a talented player he is, and how he could progress into a Vik MkII.

It will help now that people are not so critical of him all the time, assuming he reads SM.

Played better Friday but still lack lustre in front of goal bit unlucky hitting the Ruddy bonce but the goal is a a big target, should have done better imo.

His head was down and he didn’t look up, judging by the highlights. I think Ruddy’s position took him by surprise as well, to be honest.

Have had this conversation (sort of) with Calista in the City Unseen thread for the Brum game. Wright makes good space for himself and in training/warmup, he doesn't appear to look yet can place his shots all over the goal, corners, post etc. Yet the majority of his attempts during games are low and central, giving the goalkeeper the greatest chance of saving them. In the Brum game, I don't remember Ruddy having to stretch to tip one of his shots. The majority were straight at him. And in the games I've listened to or watched on TV (I don't go to games for health reasons), it's rare that he's struck the ball through his laces, preferring to sidefoot his shots, immediately reducing the power of the shot. And rather than shoot on his first touch, he takes a second (or third) and then places the ball centrally. Don't think I've seen him try to chip an advancing keeper either. So if I were the So'ton or Leeds keepers watching his game videos, it'd be easy to identify where he will go in 1-2-1s.

We know he's got the ability, he needs to trust in himself.

Fans singing his name, Robins being positive in interviews. He has the moral support from everyone at the club, judging from footage and what is written about him. I think the only person who is still over-critical about him is himself. Watching the Blues game on Sky, his last attempt on goal, he went down and the camera picked him out lying face down clenching his fists. Another Cov player came across to pick him up. He looks like he's getting frustrated and the longer it goes on, the greater the impact on his mental state.

He needs to loosen up and shoot on sight a few times rather than trying to place the ball in the net.

What I cropped out the picture was the covering defender on the line I'm not saying he couldn't have gone for the other side of the goal just that it wasn't open.

I think it was going wide anyway, Ruddy was miles out his 6 yards box and Wright hit it with a bit of curve.

The goals will come for Wright. What impressed me was his work rate. He regularly filled back in and tracked back. When he gets the ball he rarely wastes it which keeps us ticking. Just need him to hit the net more regularly.

Just to continue the how unlucky is Wright theme... Keeper completely out of control not even looking at the ball arms nowhere close and it hits him in the face...

Looking at that freezeframe (and in hindsight obviously), the best option would have been to roll it along the ground and under the keeper. I do think keepers like to deploy the old Schmeichel star jump in such circumstances, and rolling the ball has as good a chance as any in that situation. The other option is to try to take it round the keeper, with the keeper diving in like that, you're as likely to get a penalty and a possible sending off as a result.

I'd have gone with the take-around option. Playing it under the keeper still gives him the chance of saving whereas taking him out of the equation would require an extra touch but still enough time to beat the retreating defender headed to the far post.

From all the angles I saw looked like top corner to me. Could be wrong as it's hard to always guess the flight of the ball right.

With the take around option there was a defender behind him on the line so would be tough/may not be a sending off even if taken down. Rolling it isn't the worst shout in the world but he has just rolled a player and likely finding balance. It's one of them where it's probably better if he scuffs it

Same reason Simms often shoots when he shouldn’t. Because fans have been on their back to score.

I don’t think the pass was on, you’ve got two defenders running towards the passing lane and Simms is running away from a pass.

Had he passed and it got intercepted, you’d have a bunch of people slagging him off for not shooting.

The right decision was to shoot, but needed better execution/luck to score. It wasn’t an ‘easy chance’.

Initial positioning before he hits the ball. While Simms may be the better option I think he's good value to take in the shot.

Yeah, can see them both with the ball in front of goal thinking, " What would SBT think I should do?" .

He was excellent today, calm with his finish, held the ball up well. But what impressed me was his tracking back. The move out wider suits him.

Also feel like Simms will come good. Just needs that breakthrough and run that Wright has had. He made some good runs. Checked his movement to stay onside for that chance in the 1st half.

Best game so far for us I thought. Defended well, laidvthe ball off, looked a threat with his dribbling. He’ll be alright.

He's certainly improving, but there's still a long way to go before he becomes a very good player.

Took his goal very well indeed and agree, his best game in a Cov shirt so far. Just need Simms to follow suit.

Including sub appearances, Wright has played the equivalent of 14 full 90min games.

6 goals and 1 assist.

Think tonight solved the left foot/right foot debate, for me. I’d say he’s predominantly right footed, always gonna look to cut inside.
He’s a good player there, adjusting to Championship life. It’s coming…
Jeez if Viktor scored all the chances he had last season where he went alone or was put thru he’d have had 40-odd goals.
If he gets 15 this season that would be a good return, the others need to follow suit now.

Amazingly Haji goal ratio was 1.5-1.75 over the last few seasons in Turkey.

Currently for us it’s at 2.3 and improving

So is 2.3 vs 1.5-1.75 good? I'm confused.

Lower the better. He’s scoring a goal every 2.3 games instead of every 1.5.

Yes. So he's not performing as well as he did in Turkey.
