Lampard said the club had already identified Grimes before he arrived. I don't think he signs without Lampard though. We thought Sheaf was a conductor of play, and then we saw Grimes play.

Defensive midfield's all about energy, timing and positioning, not brute force.

Kante, best defensive midfielder of his generation, and a wisp of a man. Makelele and Deschamps, who pretty much defined the role, were hardly giants, either.

ETA: although obviously what drove their success was their absolutely relentless energy and ability to cover so much distance in games.

Interesting suggestions.
In my time watching I’d pick out:
Regis, Gallacher, Robson, Dublin, Ogrizovic, Leon Clarke, McNulty, Kelly

He’s right up there with the best of them, don‘t think i‘ve ever seen a cov player just control a game like he does, we’ve gone up a level since he’s been here and I don’t think he’d be out of place in the prem, dublins goals prob kept us up so maybe he just nicks it,

slightly off topic but the way we have got to where we are today from SISU, Slade etc. is really important. No gaming administration or FFP loopholes, no sugar day oligarch throwing money at it, just canny trading, improving players for value, cup runs, good attacking football, loyal support through thick and thin and now selling out the CBS. We'll have earnt promotion as a club and as a fanbase when we get there.

I think Dave Bennett beats most of those with exception of Oggy..maybe him & Cyrill

Surely if you have been watching over that time Dave Bennett & Darren Huckerby are ahead of Clarke McNulty & Kelly.

I must admit I wasn't that enamoured with him particularly at the start of his time with us.
Progressively got better as time went on.

Depends on the context. Clarke’s partnership with Wilson kept us out of a really bad situation in a year when we started off with minus points (only didn’t put Wilson in as we didn’t sign him). McNulty and Kelly the same. If those signings didn’t come off we would have been serious trouble. Without Huckerby for example we’d have just finished lower in the prem. less of an impact than going out of the league structure.

It was very nearly Liam Kelly - would have been a fantastic achievement.

I remember it being a huge deal when we signed Wilf Smith
( the first £100,000 defender?)

It could be argued the signing of Robbie Keane (or more to the point the reasons behind it) was one of the most disastrous signings the club has made.

There's been some great individual signings, such as Gyokeres. However, in the context making the whole team unit better, Grimes has to be up there. The way he did so from the off too is impressive.

I wouldn't class Keane as an important signing. Class player, but didn't even play a whole season for us! Hes not even near the top 50 of important players the club have signed

Also, an honorable mention to Michael Folivi

With his rather severe downturn in form, I was thinking back to that issue he seemed to have at Southampton where it looked like his boot got stuck in the turf. Since then I don’t think he’s looked anywhere near the same - now that may be coincidental but it almost tallies with our loss of form. Weird one.

If it is an ongoing injury then it makes it even more important we bring in another midfielder in the next few days

You might have a point. It's hard to pinpoint the issue as he's having to do the job of about 3 other players, but he seems to have fallen off a cliff.

That's not what he's done though is it?
He's suggested perhaps an ongoing injury is behind his drop in form. But you know that.

And to think you accuse other people of being overly dramatic!

I think it is Franks formation. He won't change it. We have been poor since end of November. Even Leicester and Millwall.

I've watched Grimes lately, aswell as Torp. Both came to us as the "messiahs". Not been impressed with either of them. Same goes for Wright. He really needs to up his game.Really impressed with the loanee, Esse. Looks a handful.
Anyway, what do I know? A 73 year old fart!

Why have you kept it so long ?

And is it in a glass bottle with a cork ready to be donated to a museum?

Maybe try this one...

Exactly this.

He is often left on his own in the middle of the park to play against 3, sometimes even 4 when they pack out the midfield. Not much he can do when we are leaving him so isolated.

I thought wright has been excellent the last 3
Torp was poor v Norwich on the ball and his shooting has been off a bit
Grimes is still excellent he’s being overrun and pressured when on the ball and I think he’s not being as brave but he’s still excellent. I do wonder if he’s lost a bit of pace but think he’s just having to cover everywhere

Spot on Pete. If anyone looked at the amount of ground grimes covered/had to cover on Monday there would be no question on what he brings to the team, whether he’s on top form or not. Also put a couple of cracking long balls through.

Teams have found us out a bit, as you’d expect as season goes on and are targeting certain players (same with EMC). This should free up space elsewhere and it’s up to management and other players to take advantage of this.

Wright has been okay"excellent" is pushing it. He has now scored 2 in 17, I believe. Simms 10 in 12 starts, or thereabouts.

Grimes has been ok recently imo perhaps not quite up to his very best... just having to do way too much on his own, needs some help in that area, not missed a league game, he must be knackered tbh

I feel a bit better now. I think Grimes is the catalyst of our demise. He's such a good player, his dip in form is killing us right now. Whether he's getting tactically beaten up by the opposition or just playing badly ...I'm not sure. He definitely needs help from others around him. They all need to step up , grow up and stop feeling sorry for themselves. It starts with our next home game. We win that and hopefully come back to form .
Feel a bit sorry for Matt at present but I honestly think he will come through this.
