Grimes - our most important signing ever ? (5 Viewers)

Lampard said the club had already identified Grimes before he arrived. I don't think he signs without Lampard though. We thought Sheaf was a conductor of play, and then we saw Grimes play.

Defensive midfield's all about energy, timing and positioning, not brute force.

Kante, best defensive midfielder of his generation, and a wisp of a man. Makelele and Deschamps, who pretty much defined the role, were hardly giants, either.

ETA: although obviously what drove their success was their absolutely relentless energy and ability to cover so much distance in games.

He’s right up there with the best of them, don‘t think i‘ve ever seen a cov player just control a game like he does, we’ve gone up a level since he’s been here and I don’t think he’d be out of place in the prem, dublins goals prob kept us up so maybe he just nicks it,

And Hamer's £15m
slightly off topic but the way we have got to where we are today from SISU, Slade etc. is really important. No gaming administration or FFP loopholes, no sugar day oligarch throwing money at it, just canny trading, improving players for value, cup runs, good attacking football, loyal support through thick and thin and now selling out the CBS. We'll have earnt promotion as a club and as a fanbase when we get there.

Interesting suggestions.
In my time watching I’d pick out:
Regis, Gallacher, Robson, Dublin, Ogrizovic, Leon Clarke, McNulty, Kelly
I think Dave Bennett beats most of those with exception of Oggy..maybe him & Cyrill

Surely if you have been watching over that time Dave Bennett & Darren Huckerby are ahead of Clarke McNulty & Kelly.

Depends on the context. Clarke’s partnership with Wilson kept us out of a really bad situation in a year when we started off with minus points (only didn’t put Wilson in as we didn’t sign him). McNulty and Kelly the same. If those signings didn’t come off we would have been serious trouble. Without Huckerby for example we’d have just finished lower in the prem. less of an impact than going out of the league structure.
