Turnstile are pretty good if you like punk. The crowd are going mental
I’m of an age where I just laugh at the kids thinking they’ve discovered a new thing 😂

Can’t decide if they’re great or a commercialised version of what I used to listen.

Is quite comical the number of comments I’ve seen about people ‘living in the moment’ at their gigs and not watching through their phones.

Very ironic given your so called humorous japes seem to only attract the imbecile PVA

Let’s be honest if your journalist “career” has as many people interested in you as there are on here then the Basildon is probably hyperbole

Which is still one more like than your side splitting Basildon joke.

Rod's voice has held up better than I was expecting, there was some event a few years back where he sounded completely shot. Thought he may end up just barking and yapping in place of singing like Elton John eventually had to

I wasn’t talking to you? Why do you need to answer on his behalf?

Because you mentioned my name you fucking clown.

And you constantly reply to posts that aren't addressed to you, there is no rule against it as far as I'm aware.

They’re a hardcore band; thats how they started at least. I don’t think they’ve ever set out to do anything “new”; just a version of the music they enjoy. They are very much leaning into the commercial aspect of what they used to do (knowingly). The new guitarist is a lass from the UK that had been playing in bands over here for ages and the whole band are pretty authentic, so can fully see the appeal.

You will be crying if he does another flounce and saying “we’ve lost a decent poster” again no doubt

Well obviously they're a hardcore band but I just mean their sound is more commercial than the likes of Sick of it All, Cro-Mags etc. But I'm very aware of not being that Pistols fan from the 70s hating Green Day, Rancid, Offspring etc because they've sold out and aren't real punk :ROFLMAO:

Think I first saw them live around 10 years ago at the Asylum supporting someone, maybe Story So Far. One of those bands I've seen loads of times without ever going to see them. Always enjoy the live show but then when I listen to them on record it loses something.

Maybe the upcoming record will be the one to change that.

Yeah the production is insanely glossy, particularly on their newest records, but I definitely think that’s a decision based on where they’re at now!

Not a massive fan myself, but just appreciate them being people from humble beginnings doing the rounds etc so respect the fact they earned where they are now, without trend hopping or sacrificing anything or being watery muppets like Idles.

Enjoying the Turnstile chat. Not my thing but as a gateway band for kids in 2025 I love them. Representative of where they come from, really authentic and absolutely ripping when they're on it (Blackout, TLC). I'll catch them on iPlayer later, nice one for letting me know they were playing.

and if anyone likes their post-hardcore, give 'Burnt Sugar' by Gouge Away a listen. Brilliant record.

There's articles in the US press now about how they're going to save live music and stop venues shutting as there's now an underground punk movement. Its a nice sentiment and hopefully true but I suspect that movement has always been there, its just getting more attention now.

But as happened back in my younger days it's fucking great when the scene you're into suddenly explodes.

so it sounds like we should be doing a virtual tape trade of hardcore and punk stuff here. New thread?

I think Peter and The Test Tube Babies may be a bit too hardcore. The modern punk movement is pretty pathetic.

Yeah for sure, it’s always been there and will never be going away. There’s a small network of supportive venues in the UK as well as the US who are a massive part of things as well.

Always great to hear from someone who knows all about the modern punk movement 🤣

I just doubt it’s quite the same as seeing Sham 69 and The Angelic Upstarts in Brixton. The sanitised versions of all genres is pretty dull.

The fighting as skinheads decided to show up I think would lead to PTSD for the modern day lot. For the record I never really enjoyed this affront on the eardrums (Jimmy Percey did have some earthy charm but his concerts always ended early as people kicked the shit out of each other) but a couple of mates dragged me along.

translating as 'I have no knowledge of the subject but I'll assume it's less good than the old days!'. Fun to know the everyone's soft nowadays narrative extends to post-punk sub-genres, at least 🤷🏻

My point is I doubt bands with those anarchy beliefs would ever sign up for a cosy commercial BBC wankfest

I see where they got their name from Gouge Away is a song by Pixies , it's about the story of Sampson & Delilah.

Angelic Upstarts were well known anti-fascists as well. Shame about Mensi.

Theres lots happening with a similar vibe to that, you just have to look for it.

Hardcore punk at it roots was focused on community, self-improvement, exploring alternative ways of living and making art. In that respect, Turnstile is probably about as true to the original spirit of it as you can get, and a great fit for Glastonbury, historically at least. Drunks fighting in pubs in the UK in the early 80s is nothing to do with Turnstile or their musical ancestors i.e. hardcore punk, which is what people were talking about.
