None of the parties deserve to be voted for.

I understand and it’s inevitable that things will creep under the radar and the end goal is going to be deregulation. Believe me, I’ve always voted since I was 18 and for me this incredibly difficult.

I live abroad now so it’s an extra hassle, especially when I feel so disengaged.

I’d probably end up gritting my teeth and voting Labour if I were in the UK still but that would only have been due to my excellent MP, Peter Kyle.

Discussion of politics beyond which way you voted is pretty much a no go area in schools now. Though the statistics do show that in state schools at least most teachers are left leaning-with good reason considering the decade of real terms cuts education has seen under the Conservatives. Teaching in Coventry especially so

It's a load of rubbish. I went to school as well and never heard any of it. Nonsense propagated by the right wing press as teachers have the brass neck to be unionised.

Tell me something, given all this brainwashing why haven't the last few generations turned out to be radical left wingers?

It doesn’t matter what the news is about, both parties will still have a manifesto and still make decisions for the next five years.

Just because we are distracted by Brexit doesn’t mean they’ve taken their eye off the ball when it comes to domestic policy.

Im just going to leave this here. Figures from 2016, it’s only got worse for the Tories since then. Any notion that Labour is either worse for the debt, or responsible for the *global* financial crash is beyond ludicrous.

In fact, Browns response was hailed around the world as leading the response and avoiding further disaster: Nobel winner Paul Krugman: How Gordon saved the world | This is Money

Of course you wouldn’t know either of those things if you only read the Mail or watched BBC.

As for not spending it wisely, I’d rather reducing child poverty and improving public services than lining the pockets of billionaires (or garden bridge designers).

Does get a fair bit of stick, some of it is warranted....the gold sell off, his battle for leadership with Blair and not ending boom and bust (as promised) - guess that’s why he spent all the cash available.

Always thought he was just the wrong type of person to be a leader but felt he was a good person deep down and looking at some of the shat around now maybe I was a bit harsh

Correct, it was a world wide financial crisis. The problem was more that they inherited a strong economy and in times of strong economic growth, spent (not saying wasted necessarily) all the cash so there was no reserves for what was for most (apart from Vince cable I hear !) the unexpected financial crisis

This won’t go down with the frothers but Brown was probably the best chancellor in my lifetime. He was probably the last serious PM we had as well.

He wasn’t perfect but he oversaw more surpluses and paid off more debt than the Tories either side of him by far.

He wasn’t perfect by any stretch, but he gets a ridiculous amount of undeserved stick here when he’s seen very differently abroad.

Plus he’s good mates with Shakira. Which is my favourite Gordon Brown fact.

That’s simply not true Steve. Labour ran more surpluses and a lower deficit. There’s no amount of money that would’ve cushioned us from the GFC. He maybe overspent slightly in the couple of years before, but the headroom he’d grown in the decade before that justified it.

The note was a traditional joke between chancellors that isn’t usually used for political gain until these Tories came along.

As for no more boom and bust, he wasn’t far off:

May was much further ahead in 2017 than Boris is at this moment in time in the polls. In fact just before she announced an election some polls had her in the late 40’s so with an allowable margin of error she could have claimed just over 50%. Ultimately it was Scotland that “saved” her neck that allowed her enough power to form an agreement with the DUP and as others have pointed out Boris is highly unlikely to end up with that luxury. Especially now Ruth Davis isn’t leading the charge in Scotland for the Tories. I too struggle to see how ultimately the numbers are going to change to the benefit of the Tory Party. They’ve very likely got a mountain to climb in London seats also.

You know what I respected about Brown? He didn't use his children for political gain, he didn't exploit his disability, and he didn't style himself doctor. His mistake was letting the spin doctors try and turn him into Blair-lite when he became PM. What people wanted was an anti-Blair, and as a sincere deep thinker, that was exactly what he was.

This is something I don’t get. The type of people who have the mentality to do something as decent as being a teacher should be judged negatively on the same mentality because of where it’s led them politically. Doesn’t the fact that teachers tend to be left thinking and the fact that contribute something positive to society say something positive about socialism?

Compare that to your average capitalist whether that be the traders that gamble and lose your pension, invent things like endowment mortgages, disaster capitalist, all things that the working man end up paying for while the people behind them waltz of into the sunset with a big fat bonus, they all tend to be right wing. Unless you’re one of those guys why would you want to be on their side?

I think unfortunately for him was that IIRC his last budget was delivered with a declaration of this is the end of boom and bust. He became PM shortly after and then shortly after that we went bust, following a boom.

The graph shows the strong sustained economic growth though. Labour ran a deficit for six years pre financial crisis...even though there had been strong growth and no recession for since 1993 ?!

All depends what side of the political coin you’re on though.

Ps I voted for labour twice during that period so my bad !!!

So what do you think if Gordon Brown killing off final salary pension schemes for the private sector?

How about leaving the UK skint by overspending and wasting many billions on schemes that were scrapped.
