It's not just his athleticism, which is fantastic, but you can tell he mentally sees the game a lot quicker. His anticipation is fantastic and he knows where he needs to put himself. Very intelligent player.

It's funny as even within the first five minutes I thought to myself it was clear he'd played at a much superior level. And I don't think he'd even seen much of the ball at that point. It was just the way he moved off the ball.

Not to get ahead of ourselves but should we go up, at an assumed fee of >£10m that's a great first signing

Haven't we got an option for around £8m?

I’m trying not to get too carried away in case he’s crap in the next game, but I was super impressed by him.

edit - just to clarify I thought he’d be good, but he was better in yesterday’s game than I thought he would be.

He was holding such high press position at one point almost like a no10, then next move he was winning the ball back in the centre circle.
He’s clearly at a level we’ve needed for some time but we wouldn’t be attracting players like him unless we were top of the league with a good chance of promotion, so a win all round.

Like FL said yesterday...he eats the ground up literally round him. He snuffed out everything.

Before he even won the ball..he was 2 steps ahead and knew what his next pass/ lay off was going to be.

He was here , there everywhere!

This sort of instinct cant be taught.

For a debut! Take a bow son.

And he’s been struggling to start for Brentford. Just show how huge the gulf is between the two leagues.
He stood out last night that he had been playing a level above.

Brentford are a top half team to be fair so that gap is almost 2 leagues above.

Onyeka is a physical profile that we need to replicate in multiple positions if we go up. JDS, Grime, Kitching/Lati (probably Thomas too) in the starting 11 would all struggle in terms of physicality.

I’m reasonably confident that EMC could do well physically, and despite my scepticism of Sakamoto as an attacker, could prove useful in the Prem for his off the ball work. In the Prem, games will be more like last night than v Oxford.

I'm not sure of the fee, but it's an obligation to buy should we be promoted this season.

That gulf was demonstrated against Ipswich in the cup last season. A largely rotated team for a side that got handsomely relegated was miles ahead of us.

On the flip side to that, Kalvin Phillips has looked dog shit in his 2 appearances for blades so far. Its one thing coming down from the level above, but to come in and make an instant impact after not playing in a long spell is something else. Props to him!

Let’s hope his pedigree shows up in these next 2 away games , but a very impressive debut & at last a signing that wasn’t a winger

We could do with a couple of wins from the next 3. Stoke you would hope would be one, with Albion probably the next best chance. One game at a time, though! A fit (ter) Onyeka will hopefully play a big part. I think we may need to manage his minutes over the next 2 games, though (being Sat/Wed)

We haven’t won away for nearly 3 months so we need 4 points from WBA and Sheff U and frankly, it’s not a big ask.

At home, Stoke, PNE and Southampton are all games we need to be winning, so 7/9 is a reasonable expectation. Bristol City is another game we need to be eying up a win for too.

As Lampard said last night, we’ve got to follow up on this win because otherwise, it’s all for naught and my hope is that Boro briefly overtaking us put the impetus back on us to turn it around.

This is where the difference in quality between the Prem and the Championship shows. He is Prem quality but a £35m signing is even better.

We haven’t even seen the best of him yet. Onyeka will get fitter with game time, and we also have to remember Middlesbrough have a very strong midfield. I can't wait to see him against the sides with average Championship players with an average midfield. He will be a class above them.

Onyeka has played a reasonable amount of minutes this season when you factor in International apps. He's hardly come in completely cold like Phillips has with Sheff U.

He also had a full season last season at FC Ausberg.

It's two entirely different scenarios IMO.

Onyeka also looks after himself much better than Kalvin Phillips when he isnt playing on top of the fact Onyeka has featured much more than Phillips, such a sad falloff for a once semi-decent top flight player

Yup i said the same to those around me...hed only had about 3 touches then. But you could see exactly what you mentioned.

Which is kind of the same with Lats..rarely caught out of position anticipates well.

Indeed.

A £10m signing on £35k pw is going to be a big signing for a Championship club. A £10m signing on £35k p w in the Prem is either a backup or a bit of a punt on a young prospect.

I genuinely wouldnt be against him stamping his mark on the league with 5 bookings in his first 5 games tbh! We're far too weak from front to back. So soft. We need a bit of mettle in the team. Somebody to put it on the opposition toes and break up their play. Let everyone else play fancy football, you just need to get in opposition faces when we havent got the ball. Disrupt it however necessary.

Should've been 2 down, 3 to go. But inexplicably the ref booked Tats, robbing Frank of his second yellow

Different class today. Once again lead by example. Broke up play, busied himself constantly. He really was the missing piece. He really has pulled the entire team up by their boot straps and injected some fight and aggression in to the team.

Another good performance by Onyeka. Just showed he is a class above the rest again. Nothing too flash but always there.

What we need to remember is he isn't up to Championship fitness yet and still doesn't know exactly how his new team mates play yet. Give him a few more games and he will be a delight to watch.

Hopefully those who doubted the difference he will make to our side have seen the difference already. Operation Premiership is back on and gaining pace.

Looks a cut above most in this league, what you'd expect from someone with his experience.

Maybe he isn't good enough for Brentford but they are a team trying to get into Europe.
