Highest compliment you can pay, in my book. McGrath was the beating heart of one great Cov side, and it could be well be that Frank the Tank might be the same for another one.

FL said himself, we needed help. We could all clearly see that ourselves. And it wasn't going to take much to change our fortunes back round. We just needed a constructive January transfer window.

And we got it.

One player can change a team and we were crying out for a ball winner and a player with energy and strength. Someone who could break up play etc.

The guy has played 41 times for his country and has also played in the Bundesliga and Premier League.

It was clear that he was going to have quality.

Exactly the type of player we needed. People may like Eccles and I love Torp but neither has the necessary physicality, particularly with Rudoni and Grimes both having a bit of the dandy dan.

The best England central midfield came about by accident in the 1986 World Cup - Glen Hoddle doing the fancy stuff and Peter Reid as the 'enforcer'. That is the sort of combo we need and may have found

I was thinking Boateng myself this morning. As I was a little too young to appreciate McGrath.

Onyeka didnt sit as deep as I was expecting, but I think that is becuase he has the legs and engine to get back when needed. He looks a proper box to box type. I wouldn't be suprised to see him add goals to the team as well.

He was further forward against Oxford as well, I think it is something Lampard has decided to change.

I noticed that.

You can see the sense in it as being further forward actually allows him to unlock defences with his passing or in the press have an extra man to help close down the opposition.

Also, a big part of the problem with the midfield previously was the huge gaps which were left in the transition and a lot of the time that was largely due to Grimes sitting way too deep, Rudoni doing his floating paper bag act and either Torp or Eccles then being forced to act as a one man midfield.

In a roundabout way, by encouraging Grimes further forward when we have the ball or in the press - and having Onyeka sitting in the traditional 6 slot - I think that actually helps in the event the ball is lost as at least there's some semblance of a midfield structure there.

Tbf he couldnt get anywhere near Brentfords first 11, and hes hardly kicked a ball before the ACON tournament,
and yet he drops into our midfield effortlessly and goes off to a (deserved) standing ovation. It reminded me of Esse when he arrived, which, for me just highlights the massive gulf in quality between the Championship and the PL.

We won't keep many of this squad (if any) if we do go up, and the recruitment department will have a very busy summer

Like FL said yesterday...he eats the ground up literally round him. He snuffed out everything.

Before he even won the ball..he was 2 steps ahead and knew what his next pass/ lay off was going to be.

He was here , there everywhere!

This sort of instinct cant be taught.

He didn't but they are different types of players. Torp is more creative and The Tank has the engine. He's also a PL player. No shame in not being able to keep up with Big Frank. He gave us fresh legs and there will be times when Torp is needed when we need that extra spark.

He has raw athleticism Eccles and Torp for their qualities are some way away in that respect. I am just pleased we can say to him run hard for 70 mins and then we can bring on less physically dynamic players with slightly different skill sets when the opposition are slightly more tired.
