Not that they were unwanted, Andrew, it's because I'd caught so bloody many! I used to fish off Yarmouth pier. I'd watch out for diving terns, who were after the whitebait. This let me know the bass would be around. The bass would go mad for the shoals of whitebait. Some lads would scoop them up in nets and use them as bait. Me? I'd take a white plastic bag with me and cut out small, long diamond shapes and stick them on a hook. Fooled the bass every time! Same with mackerel. 6 hook line, jigged with feathers. 30 to 40 mackerel a day!Don't think I've ever seen Sea Bass and unwanted in the same sentence before Houch...

Any of that near CopsewoodReckon I've done most types of fishing over the years, but fell in love with fly fishing about 20 years ago. Recently I got into salt water fly fishing off the Gulf beaches in Florida. I can lose myself for hours sight casting to wary snook and jacks basking in crystal clear warm water or stalking a big redfish from a kayak around the mangroves.

There`s been a sea change in coarse fishing from when I was young, as everyone just seems to fish for carp now.
The other month when he was night fishing, he " accidentally" caught a 6lb tench and was pissed off it wasn`t carp
That would be a red letter fish any day of the week for me !
I quite often go with him in the evenings and happily catch perch, roach and tench, whilst he sits there with three rods out and doesn`t even get a bite.
I just love being out on the side of a beautiful lake / pond somewhere, with all the wildlife and the peace and quiet, it`s almost like meditation tome.

Started fishing when i was a kid with my dad on the Cov Cut , been match fishing now for best part of 30 years, getting into fishing now lot easier than it used to be , you can get kitted out with the basic for a decent price with the like of Angling Direct and Go outdoors selling quailty gear at a decent price.
My advice for what its worth is pick which route you want to take , do you want to chuck a feeder or do you want to float fish , do you want to go after carp or the catch anything that swims approach.
Alot of the commercial fisheries although mainly carp have a good head of silver fish get yourself a float rod something to sit on (chair will do) landing net pint of maggots away you go.
Also most commercial fisheries will have help at hand because at the end of the day your a paying customer and they want you to enjoy it and return.
Also YOU TUBE has loads of anglers passing on tips to assist the novice dont pick the tackle company sites or sponsered anglers sites
just look for a normal joe bloggs who posts on there.....Adams anging adventures is good , Snagged bros if you wannt to get into pike fishing and have a laugh.
You could always pop into Lanes and ask questions lads in there will help no end , Tunnel Barn Farm tackle shop onsite they will put you right, same as Packington , John who runs it very helpful ..................

The best thing for getting kids into angling,i s taking them somewhere that you know they`re going to catch. Doesn`t matter how small, they just need to catch.
There`s a couple of ponds by us, that are full of Roach / Perch , some good Carp too, but you can catch little Roach and Perch all day long on maggot and a float.
I took my eldest lad there when he was around five and that was it, he had the bug.
He even went and bought load of gear to fish the Sheffield and Tinsley Canal, which was at the back of his Uni halls in Sheffield
Don't go fishing as much as Id like but if I go on my own, flask of coffee, fresh air, so relaxing its untrue.

The pools at Kings Newnham had a decent load of Crucians in them and some Tench. There were decent Tench in Coombe too on the bend by the lilly pads. I once caught 7 weighing 6lb+ there on sweetcorn but it was a good 25 years ago.They may still be in there, as they`re hardy little buggers ?
They`re a fish that don`t seem to register at most lakes and ponds now, which is a crying shame, as they`re beautiful fish and put up a hell of a fight in comparison to their size.
There was an ornamental pond by us, that was full of goldfish, someone chucked in a load of small crucian and they cross bred.
The colours of the cross breds were glorious.
Sadly it got filled in when a new Asda was built on the site, but I think the security guards on the construction site caught as many as they could, before it got filled in and sold them on as a bit of side line.
It was a lovely little pond, properly gone back to nature, full of newts, frogs, dragon fly`s and loads of water birds.

There are a lot of YouTube vids that are very informative. A guy called Carl has a channel called fishing tutorials and this simplifies things and I’ve learned loads from him.This is a great post. I've always wanted to have a go at fishing, but just felt like it was too much to pick up, and know, on my own. Feel like you've completely simplified it, think I'll give it a go now.

My advice would be to start off float fishing mate, as although Carp fishing is all the rage at the mo, it`s not an easy thing to start off with.
For £100 or less, you can get yourself everything you need to start yourself off - rod, reel, landing net, tackle box, line, floats, hooks, weights etc.
Fishing is like all sports involving fellas, gadget heavy, as we just love buying stuff for our hobbies that we don`t really need !
Keep it simple, have a look online for local lakes / ponds that you`re guaranteed to catch at.
Don`t be worried about catching whoppers, as that comes with practice, just enjoy catching little fish as you start off and get better at it.
Also you`re not very likely to catch much during the day, so early morning or evenings till sundown are the best times to go - or night fish if you can, as that`s the optimum time to fish.

Another thing I was worried about, don't have much space so didn't want to store a bunch of equipment. There's loads of fishing spots near me apparently, so I'll look into it. The weather might help with enjoying it the first few times as well. Be nice to have a hobby where I can take the dog and relax.
