I do a bit of squid fishing here in Mallorca from November until the end of February. It's good fun but as soon as I've caught enough for dinner or a paella (normally one or two) then I'll stop. I try to despatch them humanely because it really pisses me off to see others unhook them and then just leave them to asphyxiate.

I used to go fishing nearly every weekend. Tunnel Barn Farm, Shrewley. Fabulous pools.
Then when we moved to the Isle of Wight, I took up sea fishing. Different ball game altogether, but brilliant! I had to buy another small freezer to keep all the fish I'd caught! Bass, mackerel, pollack, rays, dogfish, etc. I used to sell my unwanted bass to a local restaurant. A few fish I caught......

Don't think I've ever seen Sea Bass and unwanted in the same sentence before Houch...
Not that they were unwanted, Andrew, it's because I'd caught so bloody many! I used to fish off Yarmouth pier. I'd watch out for diving terns, who were after the whitebait. This let me know the bass would be around. The bass would go mad for the shoals of whitebait. Some lads would scoop them up in nets and use them as bait. Me? I'd take a white plastic bag with me and cut out small, long diamond shapes and stick them on a hook. Fooled the bass every time! Same with mackerel. 6 hook line, jigged with feathers. 30 to 40 mackerel a day!

Incidentally, bass had to be 16" in length to keep them. Anything less had to be returned to sea. All locals carried a measuring stick in their kit bags. We used to go mad at bloody holiday makers attempting to keep small bass! Regular patrols and checks by harbour / pier staff made sure we kept within the law!
I have a feeling that the minimum length has now increased to 18" since I left the island.

My eldest lad is an obsessive carp fisherman, where as I love fishing on the float.

There`s been a sea change in coarse fishing from when I was young, as everyone just seems to fish for carp now.

The other month when he was night fishing, he " accidentally" caught a 6lb tench and was pissed off it wasn`t carp :ROFLMAO:

That would be a red letter fish any day of the week for me !

I quite often go with him in the evenings and happily catch perch, roach and tench, whilst he sits there with three rods out and doesn`t even get a bite.

I just love being out on the side of a beautiful lake / pond somewhere, with all the wildlife and the peace and quiet, it`s almost like meditation tome.

I like the thought of it but I just don't have the patience. I'd end up just having a sleep by the lake enjoying the peace.

I'm 53 now and been going since I was about 3. Got all the carp tackle but you can't beat float fishing. The canals i used to fish around Long Itchington seem to of died of death, all the pike and zander seemed to of gobbled them up

Reckon I've done most types of fishing over the years, but fell in love with fly fishing about 20 years ago. Recently I got into salt water fly fishing off the Gulf beaches in Florida. I can lose myself for hours sight casting to wary snook and jacks basking in crystal clear warm water or stalking a big redfish from a kayak around the mangroves.

I'm surprised you have time for fishing with all the TV you watch 😉

Started fishing when i was a kid with my dad on the Cov Cut , been match fishing now for best part of 30 years, getting into fishing now lot easier than it used to be , you can get kitted out with the basic for a decent price with the like of Angling Direct and Go outdoors selling quailty gear at a decent price.
My advice for what its worth is pick which route you want to take , do you want to chuck a feeder or do you want to float fish , do you want to go after carp or the catch anything that swims approach.
Alot of the commercial fisheries although mainly carp have a good head of silver fish get yourself a float rod something to sit on (chair will do) landing net pint of maggots away you go.
Also most commercial fisheries will have help at hand because at the end of the day your a paying customer and they want you to enjoy it and return.
Also YOU TUBE has loads of anglers passing on tips to assist the novice dont pick the tackle company sites or sponsered anglers sites
just look for a normal joe bloggs who posts on there.....Adams anging adventures is good , Snagged bros if you wannt to get into pike fishing and have a laugh.
You could always pop into Lanes and ask questions lads in there will help no end , Tunnel Barn Farm tackle shop onsite they will put you right, same as Packington , John who runs it very helpful ..................
All i can say is if your thinking about it give it a go you might get HOOKED

The best thing for getting kids into angling,i s taking them somewhere that you know they`re going to catch. Doesn`t matter how small, they just need to catch.

There`s a couple of ponds by us, that are full of Roach / Perch , some good Carp too, but you can catch little Roach and Perch all day long on maggot and a float.

I took my eldest lad there when he was around five and that was it, he had the bug.

He even went and bought load of gear to fish the Sheffield and Tinsley Canal, which was at the back of his Uni halls in Sheffield :ROFLMAO:

It`s strange how waters can just change in a very short space of time.

All the public lakes by us used to be full of Crucian Carp, Tench, Roach and Perch, with very few Common / Mirrors.

Crucian Carp and Tench seemed to have dropped off the radar, whilst Commons / Mirrors are now in every lake in numbers.

I appreciate a lot of Carp have been put in, but it really makes you wonder what happened to the Tench and Crucians ?

A decent Tench or a big Crucian on a float was a full on fight, especially if you were fishing light, like you had to in the local park lakes.

It`s like all things with kids, eventually they develop patience and it becomes much easier.

When my lad first started, I pretty much abandoned my own fishing for the first couple of years, as he was incapable of unhooking a fish without ripping their mouth to pieces. So my job was pretty much to save the life of every tiny Roach or Perch he caught :ROFLMAO:

There was a couple of cruican carp pools on farmland at Frankton near Rugby, lily pads, a dam wall, the place was idilic. Shame it's been closed for years and gone into disrepair. A double red maggot on a waggler was the way

They may still be in there, as they`re hardy little buggers ?

They`re a fish that don`t seem to register at most lakes and ponds now, which is a crying shame, as they`re beautiful fish and put up a hell of a fight in comparison to their size.

There was an ornamental pond by us, that was full of goldfish, someone chucked in a load of small crucian and they cross bred.

The colours of the cross breds were glorious.

Sadly it got filled in when a new Asda was built on the site, but I think the security guards on the construction site caught as many as they could, before it got filled in and sold them on as a bit of side line.

It was a lovely little pond, properly gone back to nature, full of newts, frogs, dragon fly`s and loads of water birds.

I actually drove past Frankton yesterday and was wondering if that pond was still there. Used to go years ago and there were loads of crusians!

The pools at Kings Newnham had a decent load of Crucians in them and some Tench. There were decent Tench in Coombe too on the bend by the lilly pads. I once caught 7 weighing 6lb+ there on sweetcorn but it was a good 25 years ago.
I read somewhere that Crucians were becoming rare as they were interbreeding with other carp species.

Is it accessible still and is fishing available or is it over grown etc?

It's all fenced off and the dam wall looks a mess, still fishable though with a bit of a spruce up around the swims. Currently not available to fish though. Used to be owned by the farmer

This is a great post. I've always wanted to have a go at fishing, but just felt like it was too much to pick up, and know, on my own. Feel like you've completely simplified it, think I'll give it a go now. (y)

There are a lot of YouTube vids that are very informative. A guy called Carl has a channel called fishing tutorials and this simplifies things and I’ve learned loads from him.
Coincidentally my neighbour is Darren Cox who is a professional for Garbolino (tackle) and I try and pick his brains from time to time.
I’ve fished places and methods that he has suggested in the past and sat there for 5-6 hours and caught nothing!
But it’s just being away from phones/tablets/social media in the peace and quite for an afternoon 👍

My advice would be to start off float fishing mate, as although Carp fishing is all the rage at the mo, it`s not an easy thing to start off with.

For £100 or less, you can get yourself everything you need to start yourself off - rod, reel, landing net, tackle box, line, floats, hooks, weights etc.

Fishing is like all sports involving fellas, gadget heavy, as we just love buying stuff for our hobbies that we don`t really need !

Keep it simple, have a look online for local lakes / ponds that you`re guaranteed to catch at.

Don`t be worried about catching whoppers, as that comes with practice, just enjoy catching little fish as you start off and get better at it.

Also you`re not very likely to catch much during the day, so early morning or evenings till sundown are the best times to go - or night fish if you can, as that`s the optimum time to fish.

Good luck mate, as if you like it, it` s something that you`ll enjoy for life.

Thanks for this.

Another thing I was worried about, don't have much space so didn't want to store a bunch of equipment. There's loads of fishing spots near me apparently, so I'll look into it. The weather might help with enjoying it the first few times as well. Be nice to have a hobby where I can take the dog and relax.

The biggest thing that takes up space, is the tackle box, which you can pretty much do away with if you’ve got a fold away chair to sit on ?

The rest of the stuff doesnt really take up any space at all.

You can quite often get all you need off the likes of eBay, as people get rid of loads of gear when they upgrade 👍

A nice little session on the float with my lad this afternoon, catching little roach, some of which we‘re transferring to a new pond that‘s just been built on a golf course by us tonight, once all the fellas in silly clothes have gone to bed !
