Can't disagree with that & although I'm defending Southgate to a point, I don't really rate him as a manager. My point is the team selection & formation on the face of it aren't the issue, it's how he plays them. Within those systems he still tends to go much too negative thinking that will cover up the individual deficiencies. The Stones mistake was a shocking individual error (even though Pope's pass wasn't ideal), can't really eliminate that but how he sets us up actually exacerbates issues because we spend too much time defending.

When playing a back 3 you need your wing-backs as high & wide as possible & they should spend just as much time attacking as defending. When we played it vs Belgium, and even moreso vs Denmark it was literally a flat back 5 (with a RB at LWB) + 2 x CDMs that were instructed to sit & screen. That, as you rightly said, just leaves 3 players to try & concoct something offensively & produces dire football.

Hopefully he's learned some lessons from that.

They definitely need to get the wing backs up and wide but the danger of playing them and then Sancho/Rashford/Sterling is that they drift wide and crowd the space on the wing.

He has to get those attacking players to cut in behind the defenders to create the space for the wingbacks and support the striker.

I’d go for an asymmetrical three so one of those three then one of Grealish/Foden and have them swapping to keep the defenders on their toes.

If he's as expected going with 3 centre backs, I'd play Saka and TAA as wing backs, and both Grealish and Foden off Kane. Rice and Mount in midfield.
No chance he'll be that adventurous though.

Playing that attacking against a decent side would be suicide, especially if Maguire isn't fit and we've got one of Coady or Mings starting.

We are shite at the back though, I would say we just go for the kill every game.

Then again, I am not England manager.

Yeah maybe. You just know he's going to go with a badly out of form Sterling and Rashford.

What gets me , if we were playing 'England' we'd be thinking "fuck me how do we cope with Foden, Grealish, Mount and Kane " then to have Sancho, Sterling, Rashford and Calvert Lewin to come on if needed, we'd be shitting it
What we do under Southgate is to nullify ourselves with negative thinking and negative tactics

Problem is no top forwards worry about our back line , so they know the way to beat England is to simply nullify the attack and press the back line on the counter.
Our centre halves have the turning circle of a blue whale and will be left flat footed with a quick turn of pace too

We struggle to score when decent sides are compact...think Denmark ...twice

I think that's where Grealish and Foden would be best. Trying to break down stubborn teams. Sterling seems incapable of going by a player at the moment. Just seems to run straight into defenders.

And people go on about Wembley.

Denmark beat us at Wembley more recently

Were also playing 2 sides that have beaten us in the last couple years

Sterling gets played by default in tournaments it seems.

He was awful last time round, yet still played constantly.

We played for an hour with 10 men against Denmark and started with the game with 6/11 of our probable strongest line-up.

Yeah we lost to Croatia at the World Cup but they’re a worse side now than they are today, and we’ve beaten them at Wembley since then. As for the Czech’s, they’re not a bad outfit and while we did lose to them away we did also batter them at Wembley.

Sure, we’re not great in the centre of defence but we’re really not as bad as some are making out.

My team for Croatia depends heavily on if Maguire is fit. If he is I’d go 4-3-3 and go Pickford - Walker, Stones, Maguire, Shaw - Henderson, Rice, Mount - Sancho, Kane, Grealish

And if he’s not, 5-2-3 with James, Walker, Stones, Mings, Chilwell - Rice, Mount - Sancho, Kane, Grealish

If anyone bets with SkyBet they’re doing bet £10 (or £10 E/W) on the golden boot winner and get a £3 free bet each time your chosen player scores.

I’ve gone £10 E/W on Burak Yilmaz @ 40/1

Why are we playing players that aren't in the Euros squad? Surely this is a chance to validate tactics before the tournament!

Yes you run the risk with injuries but we've got players injured in the squad anyway so can't see the issue

It’s so we can maintain the same system without changing personal. Lingard is playing where Mount/Foden will play in the actual team. Any other bench player doesn’t play the same role.

They are going on about how hard done by Lingard is. I don't get it.

Ok he could be a bit disappointed, but they are acting as if him playing tonight for England is like a chore.

He was literally given the choice to stick with the squad or go home. If he didn’t want to be there tonight he wouldn’t be.

Fuck, this is dull.

“look at this squad [proceeds to name average squad], it should easily win the Euros”

- can’t break down Austria.

People are well within their right to boo for the minutes silence that happens every other week cos someone that once saw the ricoh does.

There’s a million gestures that people could boo and don’t cos they’re not little pussies that shout at something that don’t like.
