What would be everyone’s top 3 next week?

I would be so tempted to let Woakes open. He can’t do any worse than the others and would at least have his bowling to fall back on if he did. Would also allow us to include Curran who doesn’t deserve to be dropped.

I think Bairstow needs to bat 3.

woakes against real pace and a new ball don't fancy.
Or for that matter Bairstow at 3 - was some ridiculous stat about his recent Test record against balls on the stumps. His footwork non-existent.
Not just the Ireland game but the W Indies series shows how fragile the top order are against genuine pace,
Fear they will go for same top 3 as so short on options.

Went to the first two days and totally missed today as had an appointment. Gripping to watch for most of the time but it wasn't test cricket. If we play two or three times better than that against the Aussies they'll still murder us.

First day it seemed like Eng were treating it as a warm up session. Absolutely no point in that game if you're not going to treat it seriously.

Batting, other than Root you can't really sate there is anyone who you'd really say deserves their place. Even those potentially to come in are more white-ball specialists.
Bowling, it's not really fair on many of them to leave them out. Did Broad and Woakes actually bowl at the stumps today? Was getting really irate with them going a bit high or wide etc in the first innings?

What’s happened to Pope, I think they will call up Vince but I would be tempted to go for Foakes

Inviting Ireland to Lord's so we have nothing to gain and they can go all out was always an odd choice. Actually make a series of it rather than allow an opportunity for gross embarrassment

Woakes couldn’t cope with pace at the start of an innings. I think he may not play anyway in the first test

At Edgbaston, in the form he is in and with the injuries to the quicks, he has to play.

Womens T20 isn't going well. Australia got 226-3 and in reply England are 12-3.

Archer doesn’t have the greatest red ball record.

Is it wise to throw Archer in? Not suggesting he isn’t good, but what has he done of note in the longer form? How do we know he’ll be able to cope with 25 overs in a day? Different skill set in test cricket as we’ve learnt numerous times.

But he’s going to be on a very expensive contract - he will play most tests in the ashes - the team is easy to forecast other than the one available bowling spot

It won’t be more than Woakes he has a contract for all forms

Scores of 2 and 31 against Ireland and got Denly run out needlessly.

So? It's one match. There were plenty of times when people were calling on Cook to be dropped because he'd got a few low scores.

Root is our best overall batsmen and certainly at test cricket. I don't think there is any nation that wouldn't think Root could improve their batting line-up. He can play sensibly but also score when he gets the opportunity.

Instead of Archer. It's his home ground, he can be more reliable (Archer is very quick but can be erratic (bowling a wide first ball (well, any ball) of a super over is criminal)), and I feel that Woakes is a bit more capable with the bat which giving the batting issues may be just as important.

Now that Broad has completely lost all ability with the bat (just bowl at his chin and he'll last an over or two tops) and his infuriating choice to bowl bouncers and wide of the stumps, especially to lower order batsmen I think it probably won't be too long before Archer may take his place. Don't get me wrong - he can be devastating in spells - but I feel we're getting to that stage where we're really having to think about long-term replacements for Broad and Anderson.

I think Woakes will be a good interim to aid the transition, as will Wood, with the likes of Curran and Archer being the long term replacements. What we're really looking for is that Glenn McGrath type consistent bowler who applies pressure.

An opening attack with Stone and Archer will have a few hopping in a couple of years time

Vince just isn't going to cut it. Foakes got little form.
One of the pundits was pointing out that all these contenders have technical flaws that they aren't putting right.

There just isn’t much out there Clarke hasn’t pushed on and Hain is still not reliable with the red ball.

The lad Yates at Warwickshire looks a prospect

The fact they've stuck with same batsmen shows the problems.
Any more big scores from Hain or Sibley could see them come into consideration.
Got to wonder whether Clarke s suffering a bit from the Hepburn revelations.
I like Yates. Works really hard for his wicket. Hopefully stays in the side and develops for the future.

He may also go under the radar a bit as all the talk has been about the other youngster Mousley

Those 2 and Banks got potential. Stay up and Banks and Yates will have some useful experience behind them.

The first ball Archer bowled in the super over WASN'T wide. However, it was incorrecty adjudged to be.
If anything's criminal, it's accusing someone of something they didn't do.

I was watching and called it wide at the time. So did the person watching it with me. You may disagree - it's not like he bowled it leg side or way too high, but he bowled it quite far off off-stump.

So, Archer’s in the squad. If I’m honest, I didn’t realise how good his red-ball record was.

So we know Root is batting at 3. Does that mean we will see Archer or will Curran keep his place?

Denly is 4 so Curran definitely no Anderson will play and it’s two from archer, woakes and broad. Archer has a side strain so he may miss this but will play the next one

I'd be tempted to go that route. As much as a good start is needed the last thing we want is Archer doing more damage and being out for the series.

No Archer for the first test. Woakes confirmed, 1st test is at Edgbaston - so makes sense (especially with the fitness doubt of Archer).

Root in at 3, hopefully he does the business.
