I’m certain the Lib Dems exchanged backing the tuition fee increases in exchange for the AV referendum. I may off the mark because this purely ‘off the top of my head recall’.

On its face it’s not. Tuition fees is a temporary policy change. Changing the voting system has been the long term aim of the small parties forever. They just massively underestimated the idiocy of the general public for falling the the No campaign nonsense. Much like Cameron underestimated them on Brexit.
I’d be amazed if any politician is stupid enough to hang their party on a referendum again though.

Because they’re NIMBYs. Nuclear is clean green safe energy, like trains are clean transport and new homes are more energy efficient. Just like GMO is better for feeding starving people. Greens are again all of this.
But Greens are the rural Tory NIMBY party first and environmentalists second. The fact that in the cities they’re supported exclusively by blue haired non binary otherkins is extremely funny.

I think Clegg and even Davey and the like are closer to a Cameron and Osbourne view than even a Blairite. There’s definitely left wing people in the party but mostly in a nice liberal be lovely to everyone type of vibe not so much a smash the capitalist pigs type.

More people die building nuclear power plants than after they’re built. They’re one of the safest energy sources around. They are zero carbon and the waste product is absolutely tiny.
There’s been two nuclear disasters with fatalities: Chernobyl where an outdated and unsafe tech was run into the ground by an authoritarian regime and Fukushima where arguably one guy died of cancer afterwards but otherwise there seem to have been virtually no long term effects. And that was a nuclear reactor built on a fault line.
I don’t think either apply to a conversation about nuclear in the UK in 2025.

Nuclear wouldn’t be the long term fix, but it would give countries enough time to find that fix while not burning fossil fuels. The time for it was when the French got underway with it, and iirc they’ve had zero disasters to speak of.

It doesn't, the below graphic doesn't even show the last 15 years which have been consistent budget deficits. Not that it matters that much on its own anyway, because as I always say the government is not a household and is entirely self funding, it is not operationally dependent on taxes or borrowing to fund its spending.

I’m not doubting the impartiality of the source, but the country’s public services, and the country as a whole, has been badly neglected by the Conservatives for 14 years. It needs major surgery and requires higher spending to try and repair the damage.
If we hadn’t spent the last 14 years cutting corners we wouldn’t need to overcompensate for all the knock on effects of that neglect. No party that put Liz Truss in charge gets to lecture anyone on economic competence
I’ve got no issue with the additional investment/spending, we need it, let’s just hope the extra cash is spent wisely. Unfortunately I don’t have much faith in governments of any political persuasion doing so…only time will tell though. What I find bizarre is the continuing cries of austerity and push back on any, even minor, attempt to control spending and/or make sure cash is spent as effectively as possible.
The fact is though unless rates/yields drop significantly we and many other countries are going to struggle as debt servicing costs will continue to dwarf many other elements of government expenditure.
I don’t think you’ll have to worry about that for the foreseeable future

The same is true for most people. Difference is people have to pay it off before retirement and a country never retires. This deficit hawk attitude has consistently just lead to expensive failures in public services and crumbling infrastructure that needs rebuilding. We’ve had 14 years of stagnation, how you can argue for more is beyond me TBH.
