As above, they can impose serious fines.

Newsflash to the unaware:

It’s not magic government money, it’s taxpayer money that we pay, or more often borrow so that our children pay in future.

Is that ok? How is that a good idea? You seem to have all the answers; tell us.

Dependent on the higher earner’s salary. Madness that if one earns over £60,000 some or all may need to be paid back whereas a couple earning £59,999 each don't have to make repayments.

The biggest single change was when the coalition came in and implemented austerity. Overnight benefits fell away and overtime was no longer a thing.

And since then there seems to have been no real attempt to redress the balance. We've been in austerity / permacrisis ever since.

Somehow they've managed to convince a large section of the working population that this is fine and anyone asking for a pay rise or better working conditions is out of line and wants the entire economy to collapse.

May 2010 then, only 15 years ago.

Why austerity? Was everything broken as it is now? Was there a multibillion black hole in government finances?

Didn't convince train drivers did they? TBF they bided their time until the party bought and paid for got in to power.

May be not directly. But you need a house big enough to accommodate them, a vehicle big enough to transport them. it all adds up.

If the costs are nowhere near as much as being quoted, how does the CSA justify the amount of child maintenance they charge (generally the fathers)?

Not that they are expected to justify anything. Parents are treated very differently. CSA will chat underpayments from the payer but not attempt to recover overpayments to the receiver. Where is the equity in that?

Get a paper round. Encourage the mother to get a part time job (as many did when I was younger).

Gives you an opportunity to be totally responsible for child care for a period of time.

I had two young kids in a two bed house and a hatchback. My point is the impact is generally massively overstated. There’s help available, families and friends help out early on when it’s probably most expensive. By the time the kid is out of nappies most of the expense of a bit more food and some very cheap clothes. I really think people psyche themselves out of having kids because it’s not easy to exactly plan your financial future but you make it work. You save a ton in hookers and blow for a start.

Don’t need to tell me about CSA.

a few grand per immigrant isn’t serious fines compared to putting them up in a hotel for a year.

Gotta laugh.

Keir Starmer talking tough a week before he unveils his new EU deal, where people under a certain age from the EU will have rights to work in the UK again like pre-Brexit.

Look:

I had this argument over and over during the EU Referendum:

“Do we want an equal opportunity immigration system based on skills and good character (only possible outside EU) or

One based on where you were born that discriminates on that basis” (EU position)

Since lefty liberal Labour have come in they’ve agreed deals that discriminates against people from countries “where there is a high predisposition for illegal migration (Bangladesh, Nigeria etc)”, gives different rules for people from India and will soon tip the scales for EU citizens.

The left go circle-jerking about how “equality” they are and then put blatantly discriminatory rules in place.

Buffoons.

“Two-tier” Gear (sorry Kier) is at it again.

I want one that offers free movement to countries with similar values and of a similar developmental level to us. The EU mostly gave us that, since Brexit we’ve had to rely on importing people from vastly different cultures willing to accept vastly lower living standards.

At this rate we’re going to be begging to be part of a much tougher EU immigration regime so we’ve got the tools to address our own issues.

Was just an endlessly stupid policy even on its own terms and those who made it their shining policy example should probably be quiet on policy in the future.

Sorry,

Immigration should be colour blind and nation blind. Immigration should be about who you are, not where you are from, human being by human being on their individual merits.

It’s shallow thinking to say “blah blah lah lah, prefer Europeans over Africans - different cultures - better blah blah”

Deeper thinking even on that level - are all South Africans the same, culturally? (Topical) are French Algerians Europeans or not? What about the pied-noir? (People of European decent and mainly Christians who were born in Algeria at a time when Algeria (in Africa) was part of the EU. What about Syrian Christians?

To have any immigration system based on where people are born is against the principles of equality of human life.

It’s also steeped in problems administratively.

The solution will always be:

Who you are, not where you were born.

There is a spanner in the works which will come and become an issue in the medium term:

Eire.

Many EU and Non-EU migrants settling in Eire. Once people get an Eire passport then due to our special CTA status…..

It’s an issue that will deepen.
