People seem to be looking for enemies in the wrong places.

That "tweet" was fairly plainly a bit of gentle leg-pulling between two people that might at one time have been either side of a sectarian divide. I find it encouraging that they can engage in that kind of friendly banter.

As for those of you who are about to drown in self-righteous indignation, you might do well to remember the enormous progress made in this area since the 90s. Also, it's not like Britain has suffered terribly at the hands of the Irish over the centuries- although there has been suffering on both sides, the balance sheet weighs heavily on the Irish side.

At least do yourselves the favour of reading a balanced history book or two before you turn purple and start spouting on how "evil" anybody is.

Anyway, fuck it. I'm not getting dragged into this tired old shit just because Henry VIII wanted to get his leg over (or wherever you want the starting point to be). All people of the British Isles are facing far greater threats than each other at the moment.

Any news from the club about this? Considering who he is playing for and what league he is in, it was a retarded thing to say. I can't say I'd be too bothered about him leaving purely on football grounds, his passing for a midfielder is attrocious.

Tim Fisher has said the club are investigating it

Should not take too long. A bloke says a joke. Regrets it apologizes explains it is a joke.

If it was not a joke he has publicly given his support to a now legitimate party. One not in everyones tastes with a sinister history. Nevertheless a legitimate party.

Investigation over really.

Just because the odd person on here says he should never play for the club again because it is opposite to their views I can't see it happening.

Up the RA means up the IRA. Simple as that.

Short memories on here. Our city got bombed by the IRA and this country on plenty of occasions.

ANYONE who agrees with Deegan needs to realise what utter scum they and there followers are.

I dont think people are agreeing with Deegan, as he made a joke so you dont actually know what Deegan's view is to agree or disagree with.

However the Queen is shaking hands with the IRA today so hopefully she never steps foot in this country again.

Mate you need to get a perspective on this. If Deegan had come out and said I support bomobings of innocent people then yours and many of the responses on here would be entirely justified. He hasnt.

He made a joke of bad taste and apologised.

However if he now wanted to make a point, he could turn around now and say yes I support Martin McGuiness the Queen is meeting him today. I would like Ireland to be united. I dont agree with violence and bombings to do this.

His comment of Up the RA to him could mean the above.

You believe it means he supports bombings and violence. Yet he has not said that

Personally I dont think he supports anything or is any way or form politically aware.

I think in the dressing room there will be plenty of banter and people no doubt give him dogs abuse for his Irish background, which he will laugh at and give abuse back such as this comment.

However because he is a bit dim he did it on twitter and forgot about how people over react!!

Remeber Gascoigne playing a pretend flute do you think he did this because that was his believes or because he is daft?

Like i said people have short memories.

Up the RA means up the IRA in his own country. Simple. Who cares if they dont exist anymore he still publicly came out with the comment.

If we had some arab and he said up the Taliban, would you all agree?

Same thing.

Again I would look at the context of it. If he said it to his mate as a piss take and his mate knew that he did not support violence and his mate laughed and took the michael back calling him a terrorist just because he was born in Afghanistan. I would think that is just two players having a laugh with each other.

Then if one of them in this case the arab did it to the team mate on twitter, then realised he had been a pillock and that this is seen by the would not just his team mate. He then realises his mistake and apologises. I would hope someone from the club would have a quite word with him. Not that I imagine that is now necessary.

I would hazard a guess at some point in your life you may have made a comment to someone in gest that would offend another person. You may for example have told a friend to stop been "such a puff" if they would not do something. This would suggest that becasue your friend would not do something that he is gay. Yoiur friend would take no offence to this, however a gay person may take offence.

It is bad taste humour. That is Deegans explanation "a joke" Your response is relevant if it was Deegans opinion that bombing innocent people is the right thing to do. He has not said that.

Thought this sentence was full of irony in its unifying effect!!!

Celtic and Rangers fans have reacted angrily to what they see as the criminalising of football, and have held protests at matches and in the centre of Glasgow.

Another good swerve...Still don't condone what they sang.

I think its has alot to do with the whole thread, Irish/Celtic folk like to cover/excuse what certain words/chants mean.

Always an excuse.

Sectarian chanting affects both sides of the Old Firm and neither is acceptable. Rangers fans sing about killing Gerry Adams, Celtic fans sing about killing British soldiers-so neither can really claim the moral high ground.

No-one claiming the moral high ground but the whole attitude regarding Deegan saying its 'only Up the RA' need to look at the bigger picture.

I for one would love to see Gerry Adams dead as he is a horrible man. I personally wouldn't like to see any British soliders dead.

What they sing has much to do with us. IRA bombed this city of ours. They bombed our country on many occassion.

They boo and threat our servicemen at football matches. Scum to the earth and Deegan seems to agree partly when he says up the RA.

If there was no issue, why would it banned in football grounds?
