Just walked down stairs ad watched the BBC local news on Breakfast.

Article about CRFC where a CRFC club spokesman stated , as clear as day, that WASPS being in the city will not affect them.

Not my words but on the record from the club itself.

Take their example and get on with it rather than blaming everyone else.

If CCFC start winning they will get 30K at the end of the season and people will be fighting over tickets

It's just rhetoric. Of course they will be effected by wasps being here. They have no choice but to suck it up and work with them, so they are hardly going to slag them off publicly.

And start winning and there will be 30k there lol. We've gained 11 points in 6 games, cheap tickets tomorrow and we'll still struggle to get 12k.

It wasn't a spokesman it was a random fan of rugby who lives in coventry

The guy interviewed was the CRFC chairman per the caption on the interview I saw and whilst there could be a certain amount of rhetoric in what was said it didn't come over as double talk. The good thing about the clip was it highlighted how well CRFC were doing more than anything.

For me it is too early to say how it will affect CRFC. Yes I understand the argument that it is not good for them but equally I can see how it could be good too. It is going to be dependent on the relationships that are forged and the trust that is built isn't it? That of course takes two sides working together........ not something CCFC and its fans are used to seeing

It's about the medium to long term impact on CRFC. And wasps haven't even played a game in coventry yet have they? :jerkit:

The 1000 that go to CRFC aren't going to walk away overnight, it will be a longer term problem. Two things spring to mind to me:

    1) where will the next generation of CRFC fans come from, kids will have the choice of going to see Wasps in the top tier or CRFC playing a lower standard of football. To them Wasps won't be a franchise team who have been dropped into the city, they will be a team they have grown up with
    2) lets say CRFC continue to do well and get to the top tier, where would they play? They'd need somewhere bigger than the Butts. Previously the obvious answer would be to share the Ricoh with CCFC, that's not going to be an option now.

To say it won't have any impact is like saying if Chelsea suddenly moved here it wouldn't impact us. In the short term it wouldn't as we're down to the people who will turn up no matter what but give it 10 or 20 years and we'd be a side show.

SHORT TERM - while they are are in the 3rd tier it won't affect them. For me it is more the guarantee that CRFC will now be a 2nd rate rugby club in the city. I am 99.9% sure that the long term plan was not to be Coventry's B rugby team. Of course the hardcore 1,000 won't stop going, and may even go and watch Wasps from time to time (rugby fans are quite different - and it is those fans that I would have no problem with going to watch Wasps).

So another good win for Cov today and presumably in front of another 1,000+ crowd. The positive effect that Wasps are having continues. :claping hands:

Funny how you and Grimdal always back each other up. However. I think you're wrong. Go through my posts and see how many were unrelated to Coventry. I think you'll find you're wrong. However, from observing this forum, you're very bad at admitting that. This forum is your life. This is your domain. So you may take your ball and not let anyone else play with it. Apart from your one friend!

Strange, where have I ever taken "my ball" and not let anybody else play with it? I could totally understand this comment if this place had posts deleted I didn't agree with and was run like North Korea, but it doesn't and isn't.

They were affected Saturday..it was a record crowd in the last five years with plenty turning up just before kick off carrying Wasps flags collected at the Ricoh.

Indeed the whole interest in Rugby in the City plus the 16 wins on the bounce is having some positive effect. All that said I still maintain that Cov must maintain a very separate identity from the franchise club, because it would be fatal to ever be viewed as a kind of Wasps reserve team.

Funny, I only noticed two Wasps flags in the main stand, but there definitely was some overspill from Wasps - I met a couple in the bar just prior to the game, and there were others about wearing crisp new Wasps merchandise.

Of course given this would likely have been a big attendance anyway, this being a side having won 15 on the spin before Saturday. So I think it's hard to say whether the effect was negative, positive or neutral. How many that would have gone to the Butts instead went solely to Wasps - there's simply no way to know.

It's kind of an irrelevance in truth; as long as Cov aren't a threat to Wasps, I'm sure there won't be much of a problem. However if Coventry RFC get promoted in the next couple of seasons, and are then pushing for promotion again, then they will be in direct competition for the same players, fans and sponsors. I can't quite see that working as a partnership. My point has always been that having the Wasps franchise here ultimately limits the ambition of CRFC (established in Coventry in 1874). I've seen nothing to suggest any different.

Short of some benevolent multi millionaire with very deep pockets and no sense turning up they will never compete directly. We are talking stratospheres apart and although I hear what you are saying about people going because they are on a streak this was still the biggest crowd in 5 years and it came on a day when they thought they would struggle due to the other game. Lets hope they all come back for the next home fixture!

Hi Matty, appreciate you're not trying to provoke an argument, but I'll just make the polite point that there was a better chance of that happening and Cov getting in the Prem before Wasps landed on their doorstep. As an aside, CCFC being so crap probably isn't hurting CRFC's attendance either!

I think there would have been a much better chance of people coming back if the ref had lost his whistle for the second half. It never quite got going again after he started taking an interest in every single breakdown. Still, it's a long time since we've had a team as good as this at the Butts - hopefully it continues to get a bit of recognition.

Never say never. Cov are building steadily and from decent and proper foundations and I still think given a decent Cov side perhaps in the Championship at least or follow a foreign franchise then most actual Coventry people might prefer to follow their own side. The hardest bit is getting out of this damn league we are in, but my God they are giving it a go and I for one shall be in Richmond next week getting behind them again !

I haven't been on a CRFC away trip yet, but it's getting very tempting. The more relaxed attitude to booze probably helps on that front too. You'll have to let us know what it's like. :)

I get the things about Wasps limiting Cov's potential, but I do think the interest in Rugby is helping them, and much of that interest has been generated by wasps. If Cov do it right they can do well out of it.

Them being locked out of the BPA and facing liquidation now seems a lifetime ago.

Coventry was once a rugby city, no reason why we can't have two half decent teams.

I wonder if there was an F A cup equivalent and wasps played CRFC who the likes of Ron, Italia etc would support on the day given they embrace franchising in sport as a concept.

    Ok then, that's your view.

I only care about what's good for my city and my sports clubs. Going to the Wasps game had no adverse affect on CCFC, CRFC, or CBIHC, and had a positive affect for my city. So there is no reason not to go is there?

So now you are saying people have unlimited access to cash and would not pick or choose? Long term of course it will have a damaging effect. Are you seriously telling me if say Barcelona or Chelsea were franchised and played in coventry that would not reduce CCFC attendance at all? Really?
