I was at that game and at about 7 there were only a few Bristol fans in the ground, there had been an accident on the newly opened M5 motorway only two lanes in those days, which held thousands of Bristol fans up and they all arrived en mass just after 7. The police had no other option but to ask for a delay. The Bristol contingent was well over 10000. Sunderland score was put on scoreboard but most of us knew anyway from our trannies, I’m certainSunderland were losing 1-0 at half-time, Bristol City actually hit the bar with almost the last kick of the game. Funny how this has developed 40 years after the event and far as I know not the same venom aimed at Bristol City who were part and parcel of same antics.

That they have really bad clothes, if the 1977 incident had never happened that fact would remain.

If 1977 had not happened, there would be no misinfo on the Sunderland forums, no made up animosity towards us, no made up animosity from someone like yourself and no trouble at last season's games.

I was there but remember it differently to the Brizzle report. I thought City let Bristol equalise after the announcement - and after that both sides just passed it around without threat. I remember City and Bristol fans celebrating together at the end.

Hutch scored his and our second some way into the second half. We had been comfortably the better team and looked to be coasting to the win which would have sent Bristol down and saved ourselves and Sunderland. However, they got one back out of the blue and then they really came at us getting a second to equalize. We looked out on our feet and they were definitely on top when the message came onto the scoreboard that Sunderland. d had lost. The last 3 or 4 minutes were a truce with Bristol keeping the ball and us letting them have it.
They earned their 2 goals. Definitely never let them score.

I'm sure we were 2-0 up at half time. We had won 4 and drawn 1 of our previous 5 to even have a hope going into that game.

Although I had been going since 1972, the Bristol City game in '77 was the first game I actually remember. I recall the players just passing it about and the crowd cheering a little. And being mixed in with Bristol City fans. I was only 12. I started going to basically every game home and away from the 77/78 season.

That's exactly how I remember the game. We were winning 2-1 when the announcement was made....and as Alan Dicks had been JH's assistant during our Division 2 days.

No was already 2-2 as we were panicking. I remember my uncle threatening to invade the pitch

That didn’t happen and once Bristol equalised it was them who kept the ball passing it around like a training session, but it was JH who got the blame

Your memory is letting you down.

It was most definitely 2-2 when the score (and then the correction) went up on the scoreboard.

Love the avatar by the way!

Yes, it was at 2-2, though I didn't know myself at the time. I was under the scoreboard and therefore wasn't aware the score had been flashed up and couldn't see it. I was screaming at our players to and get the ball back off the Bristol players.

Yes but you were not the lino. Also I take it you are not sat on the line. You have a wider angle of view and more elevated. You have the priviledge of potentially seeing more

I thought the ref and Lino did well on the disallowed goal.
I wonder if Kyle Lafferty had a look and apologised to the lino for his outburst

All 4 goals were in the West End goal so we were winning 2-0 at half time then buckled under when Brizzle got their goals. Think at least one was by Gerry Gow. I was in the Sky Blue Terrace and a Scot next to me held his head in his hands and kept repeating 'oh fucking hell' when it became 2-2. Terry Yorath was standing on the pitch v.near me when the scoreboard flashed up the Everton score but he didnt realise why all the fans were going mental. That was until he turned round and saw the scoreboard. A big, healthy, toothless grin followed !

I was there, just turned 15, in the West End. We definitely went 2-0 up and they pulled it back to 2-2. Only looked like one winner and it wasn’t us.

We could see the scoreboard from the West End and we cheered every time the Bristol City players passed the ball to each other.

And the point is, if Sunderland had been in the same position as the two City’s then they would have done the same .

But they couldn't because Sunderland LOST 2.0 to Everton. HAPPY DAYS.
