Davies won't be playing.

Not sure if MR has plans to start with LOB as he's been given 2 90mins in a row

If not:

Not saying this is what I'd do but I think this is what MR will do:

Burge
Sterling Grimmer Hyam Brown
Bayliss Ogogo Doyle Shipley
Andreu
Biamou

I wonder where Chaplin fits in to a 4-2-3-1 as stick him in place of Biamou and there is very little height in the front 4 that can be used as an outlet.

Portsmouth say he is useless upfront on his own

The. If we’re playing two up top where does Andreu fit in?
Yep, agreed, but Robins has rebuilt the squad so i'm trusting he can figure it out! It's nice to have options and more than just one plan though!

GK - Burge over LoB surely, unless something has happened behind the scenes (LoB starting games makes me wonder).

Hyam definitely, but I cannot see Willis (not fit) or McDonald (not competent) playing. So unless MR has total confidence in Thompson (risky having two youngsters in their first ever game at this level), then Grimmer (with Sterling RB) seems the logical solution. Although, I remember Nathan Cameron making his debut with Ben Turner on the first game of the season a few years back, and they won. Despite his performances pre-season, I think Brown will start at LB...

Doyle and A.N. Other - despite the wealth of CMs, there do not seem to be many who are fit.

Bayliss right and Shipley left... they finished the season well and, if fully tuned up, deserve to start. Bayliss may have to fill in at CM, so maybe that would give Allassani a chance on the wings.

Biamou up top, perhaps with a new signing... If there is not one, then can Andreu start (fitness issues)?

Although, this could all be torn up if MR decides to go the wing-back route!

Just spitballing here but how about a flat three in midfield with bayliss deeper and Andreu in behind the front two?

Bayliss Doyle Ogogo
Andreu
Biamou Chaplin

That sort of thing. Would mess up the chant though.

That said I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw Sterling fit in on the right somewhere?

I’ve put Willis over McDonald because I think he’s had his chances now and not taken them, and I’m unfit Willis is surely better than a fit McDonald?

This is assuming Ogogo is injured.

Sterling on the right to provide a bit of defensive cover as well as some pace going forward.

Then Davies to replace Hyam when not banned.

Amazing how many unfit players there are (or at least not fully fit)
Factors to assume
  • Davies unavailable MacDonald playing poorly therefore Willis will be risked
  • No Chaplin or equivalent (he has had a while to sort this out) happy to be proved wrong
  • Brown was bought to be first choice
  • Stirling is a wing back rather than a full back
  • We do not have the resources available for 3 at the back

Burge (known quantity)
Grimmer Willis Hyam Brown (it worked last year so don't fix it except where absolutely necessary, also two attackers in front of the full backs, so no Stirling, but expect a sub appearance)
Bayliss Ogogo Doyle Allesani (Kelly unfit)
Andreu
Biamou or JCH (either)

Worried that Bayliss and Allesani are not good as defenders
If Davies, Kelly and a striker were there I would be confident of a narrow win. Injuries and that I would settle for a draw
Allesani looks handy, so 1-1
