It’s silliness like that that leads to the silliness of the “daylight” proposal. Just go back to VAR and the like being only if it’s an obvious mistake. Once you’re measuring cm of difference then call it level.

With the daylight thing I can see that this could offset the potential margin of error. At the moment if it's a gnats bollock you can argue that they weren't offside. Do it by daylight and there's no argument. Trouble is they will end up nitpicking over a mm here or there again.

And for what it's worth, I do worry that it will lead to defences dropping deeper but in a way it would be interesting to see the tactics that develop to exploit that empty midfield space.

Aye. Functionally level.

There comes a point when if you are analysing it to the nth degree, that the thing you are looking for ceases to have any relevance.

Completely agree that if you must use VAR for offside, then a cursory check after each goal, and if there's not an obvious error (let's say one that's unambiguously apparent to the naked eye), go with the officials' decision.
