Hundreds of local authorities missing vital coronavirus testing data | Metro News

This is incredibly alarming: Nationwide data indicates the tracker is failing to show three-quarters of new cases on average in any given local area across much of the country.

Yeah it definitely is concerning. It's interesting as scientists/researchers/clinicians have hypothesising for months whether antibodies may not be long lasting or be the answer to squashing the virus. This was one of the reasons why the WHO were up in arms about the prospect of the UK pursuing the herd immunity tactic, as not only would it likely cause hundreds of thousands of preventable deaths but there was no evidence at the time to suggest that it would successfully muscle out the virus whatsoever.

Whilst the UK hasn't appropriately managed this crisis at all well, the latest findings show how devastating the situation could have gotten if our government's initial approach was left unchecked.
The initial approach isn't unchecked, it's just been slowed a bit. It is still the strategy, flatten the curve not eliminate it.

I know the reason, pretty sure it's down to an issue with the private labs being able to share data into GP systems. It should be fixed now but will obviously be incomplete.

I wonder how much inter-site travelling has been done. If people have been going between Cov - Leicester then there's a high chance it would be rife here too.

Definitely right to go with deaths. The testing data seems to be all over the place and when they won't release the number of people actually tested its virtually impossible to draw any reliable conclusions from the data they do publish.

Do they publish the number of people admitted to ICU and / or hospital? That might be a useful indicator, assuming the underlying data is solid so you can split out covid-19 cases from everything else.

They do publish the number of people on ventilators, it was part of the pack that used to go with the daily briefing slides. Not sure where else it is published

I bet Johnson wishes he could just cancel PMQs like he did the daily briefings.

It's clear he hates scrutiny. So much so that he seems to be totally shocked when he is asked questions at… Prime Minister's Questions. Does he think that means he is supposed to do all the asking?

829 cases
176 deaths

I'm not sure why people talk of a second wave, the first one has not subsided yet. When are the numbers going to drop off? It's too early to release lock down imo.

Frustrating thing is, based on the trends, they probably only needed a couple of weeks more, anyway.

The organisation I work for is vastly accelerating its reopening plans, after government announcements. It's likely to be very soon indeed, instead of it being September+ as we'd been led to believe for ages. Now everybody's running around like blue arsed flies.

Personally, I'd be more reassured at a medium term planning and consultation before implementing things in a gradual way, but I'm only the employee, what do I matter?

Righto, i knew it was Doritos but wasn't sure what else. Most people who have done agency work at some point seem to have worked there.

Couldn't get over that smell of doritios for years.

My brother had the plum job of sitting above a dropping the pogs in. My other nerdy mate collected the whole lot. Irony is they'd probably be worth a few quid nowadays.

Making the same mistake we made going into lockdown. How much better off would we be if we'd locked down 2 or 3 weeks earlier (and properly locked down the borders)?

We didn't lock down until 23rd March. I was supposed to be in London for a festival 12th - 16th March and for 2 weeks before that it was non-stop queries about if it would go ahead, nobody could believe we weren't being locked down. In the end it only got cancelled as the promoter wasn't prepared to risk it.

Now after a weak lockdown we're going to open up early when the evidence from places that have opened up without getting the numbers down is that it's a mistake. And everyone who is opening up is pointing out its vital to have huge amounts of testing and working track and trace - not exactly areas we are shining in.

Got a couple of mates who live over there and they've been posting about it. The difference when you compare the response to the outbreak in Leicester is staggering.

For a start there was very little notice. It was announced at 5pm yesterday there would be a month long lockdown and it goes into effect midnight tonight. Police will be on the streets enforcing lockdown and issuing on the spot fines. Flights into Melbourne will be diverts to other locations.

They've also already launched a judicial enquiry having traced back the outbreak to quarantine hotels. Nearly 100K people have been tested in 10 Melbourne postcodes to identify the source of the outbreak. Thats not just testing to see if they have it but genomic sequencing to identify particular strains. Essentially that means they can identify people who are likely to have been infected from the same source. The current theory is its originated in a quarantine hotel due to staff breaching infection control protocols.

Piers Morgan on GMB this morning, speaking to a reporter in the centre of Leicester said,

How do the people of Leicester feel about being sent to Coventry. Haha

Made me laugh anyway.
