25% reduction in serious injury is tiny? Its 30,000 fewer people on the roads.

Look at the trend, its pretty stark- runs at 1,800 every year but then drops steeply. Whatever your views are on WFH & whether it should continue, it certainly did cause a big drop in people getting hurt or killed on the roads.

But that wasn't really the point by Jimmyhillsfanclub and its not WFH in in all probability - its freight restrictions due to haulage declines, school closures, vacations, sporting venue attendances and travel to airports

tbf, in the context of 100,000+ it is small.

The general principle is there, but this specific example doesn't explain it alone. You'd have to add everything else on (or rather, subtract!) if you were that bothered.

I didn't go back that far, only saw shmmeee's comment. It'll be all manner of things all ultimately related to covid, no doubt about that.

Probably impossible to do that kind of analysis on it tbh. Correlation & Causation and all that. The general correlation of covid & road injuries is apparent, but lots of causes.

Plenty of places in the US have reimposed restrictions, in part because vaccination rates are stubbornly low in large swathes of the country. I don't want to go back to that either.

Shrugging your shoulders and saying the vaccine is irrelevant because we might need to get a booster and/or go back into lockdown sometime in the future doesn't make any sense to me. It's just yet another excuse. Right now it's clearly the best way to keep yourself safe, slow down the spread of the virus and get us out of this ongoing shitshow.

Saying that other people will think the vaccine is irrelevant or a waste of time is what anti-vaxxers say when they don't want to just outright say they are an anti-vaxxer themselves.

I know you two are potentially the same person on here, but just in case, which one of the below are you going to identify as?

Good to know you've still got your sense of smell, sad to hear that it's wrong though.

2020 road deaths down from about 1,800 to 1,472, biggest drop in well over a decade & road injuries down 25% in 2020, again a huge drop.

Suicides for 2018 is about 7500 for uk. Be interesting what those figures will be for 2020. Road accidents used to be on a par

Watching the news this morning see we've reverted back to claiming infection doesn't occur in schools. Must be a coincidence that every time schools or universities go back there's a big surge in cases.

Also being reported that Scotland are looking at bringing in vaccine passports. Not entirely sure why they're distinguishing between seated and unseated events. Can you not get covid if you're sitting down?

Very different approaches at universities, too. Some offering a mix of online and face-to-face, some insisting all staff go back fully, to give the students the full experience. Not entirely sure how somebody sitting in an office gives a student the full university experience they were looking for, but there you go...

Joe Rogans on it because he's got covid so suspect that will increase usage among his knuckleheaded followers will follow suit.

I read about the side affects, not very pleasant.

Was surprised when going to the UK last week that there were literally no checks done so whatsoever, including negative tests, vaccination done etc.
The only time anything was checked was handing the Italian passenger locator form to a policewoman and even then it went on a pile of them.

Britain might have 'rules' but it has no infrastructure to enforce any of them

I had a bit of faff returning from Spain last week. Couldn't check in online unless I had proof that a day 2 PCR test was booked.

No checks at BHX however, just a 90 minute wait for our luggage. No change there.

I can kind of understand this to an extent, even though the decision will probably be reversed in due course

What’s more surprising is the delays on recommending the booster programme. Again, appreciate they are suggesting we might be different due to the delays between doses hopefully providing better protection but they may as well at least recommend start getting the over 70s or 80s done if there’s no risk/adverse effects just to be sure

The JVCI have done a decent job to date but we don’t want to miss the window for those most at risk

tbf, I'd rather they got it right - including reassuring me that those who won 't get a booster jab, don't need one.

100% but also in Israel it looks like they initially missed a window which lead to double jabbed being hospitalised due to waning protection. Hopefully we’re a little different for reasons mentioned but for those highest risk and also those that had jabs early ie 70-80+ I’d probably rather they err on the side of caution. They’ve done a decent job so far though so can’t criticise

I honestly don’t know too much about their pros and cons, and I’m generally pro protest, and we can’t really proclaim “this is a dumb protest and this isn’t”. But viscerally: yeah there’s a few people I’d be happy to spray like a horny cat.
