If it hasn't been mentioned, schools etc are to close at the end of the week.

Looks like the country is going into lockdown for a month or two...

And the worst thing is everyone can only buy 3 tubs of taramasalata from the supermarkets now.

This is nowhere near enough for a panic.

I was unclear if he’s facing redundancy but this is why the strategy is a failure. It’s going to be like that Will Smith movie in reverse. The population is still alive but their is an economic Armageddon of no demand, no work and no prospect of work - it’s pie in the sky thinking

There are so many people from the office that are isolating because of symptoms, we never have this many people off with flu. Made me think if loads of us have it and just don't realise it. Lead me to this

NPR Choice page

"In 80% of known cases, COVID-19 causes mild to moderate illness, according to a report of a joint World Health Organization-China mission of 25 infectious disease experts held in China late last month.

At a press conference on March 9, Maria Van Kerkhove, technical lead of the WHO Health Emergencies Program, said: "[A] mild infection starts normally with a fever, although it may take a couple of days to get a fever. You will have some respiratory symptoms; you have some aches and pains. You'll have a dry cough. This is what the majority of individuals will have."

It is "nothing that will make you feel like you need to run to a hospital," says Dr. Amesh Adalja, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security."

Of course the best solution is going to be to introduce the kids to your work at home and say it's the new latest game out.

So much for the experts on here saying "no rush, they're waiting for the right time"- seems reality has well and truly smacked them between the eyes & all pretence of being smarter than everyone else in the world has now evaporated.

No matter what you're read or heard in the last couple of weeks, nothing could prepare you for all this, its so weird.

The only thing im worried about is all of this works, the cases drop and therefore the lock down is lifted... could it then all start to spread again? Thats the worry in china another outbreak..

Seems like until we get a vaccine it won't be sorted out at all

This seems to be the issue at the moment..

I can see the lockdown going on for a while whilst the country goes through its very own, "28 Days Later".

That’s essentially the plan. Once NHS capacity is there relax the lockdown until it starts to struggle again. If you look at the legislation going through Parliament it specifically mentions these powers will be turned on and off according to need.

I think we are around 8 or 9 days behind Italy etc for rate of spreading across the society.

  1. The capital and interest payment obligations of individuals and companies to date are suspended at the end of the year.
  2. Short-term business loans will be extended until July 30.
  3. The APR on new consumer loans taken from tomorrow will be maximized by the central bank base rate plus 5 percent.
  4. Sectors that are in serious trouble, such as tourism, hospitality, entertainment, sport, cultural services, passenger transport, or taxis, completely relieve employers of their contribution. Employees' contributions are significantly reduced. They do not have to pay pension contributions and the health insurance premium is reduced to the statutory minimum by June 30. According to KATA, taxpayers who pay tax will be relieved of their lump sum payment obligations until June 30. In these sectors, room leases cannot be terminated and rents cannot be increased. Until June 30, the tourism development contribution will also be released.
  5. Working rules are made more flexible so that employers and employees can agree more easily.
Hungarian PM just announced proper economic help for many businesses and individuals.
Means I won't have to make any redundancies, workers net income will remain roughly same but their mortgage, bank loan, credit payments suspended. Employee contributions minimized.
Tenants rights protected for those in "at risk" sectors.
Self-employed have a tax holiday at least until end of June.
This is how you help business at this time. (shame he's an authoritarian despot but can't have everything )

I normally work from home. Just not all day every day. We have only 3 cases in our "Area" (Probably twice the size of U.K.) at the moment but we're similar to you, no pubs schools churches open and more businesses closing daily. Seniors only shopping in the supermarkets from 7-8 a.m. etc etc.
I'm down to my last 137 bog rolls

2,626 cases I think. I don't know what that means in terms of increases, I would ask someone to explain the figures- but if they do our resident self appointed medical experts seem to get all hot under the collar and deny anything is real.

Anyone anyone actually read why he is using a logarithmic scale? He says it shows his preconceived point than a linear scale.

I thought Pete was facing redundancy already.
I took the post to mean with unforeseen shut down that's probably the end of his current career.

Grenners is talking nonsense about the economic future of the uk as well. Luckily the government will be forced to take demand side action.
