I think it will ultimately be taken out of this Gov'ts hands.

It will be common sense from parents, teachers etc.

A quite warming story of common sense being applied

Still not willing to say what needs to be said.

Sir Keir said: "Everybody wants children back in school. There is nobody that would argue with that. Of course that's what we all want.

"It's inevitable more schools will close.

"I don't want to call for the closure of schools tomorrow morning and add to the chaos.

"But we do need to recognise that it is inevitable that more schools will close, and we need a plan in place to deal with it."

That is what needs to be said, as someone has said already closing schools is the lesser of 2 evils. No one in there right mind wants to close schools and damage kids educations but now we need to be pragmatic and have a plan in place to deal with the school closures that will come.

Interesting that my adopted city of liverpool's council has called for a national lockdown but has also stated all schools will remain open and supported....

....maybe a reflection of the success in dramatically bringing rates down last time around from 700+ whilst schools were open....

We really need some more data on this new variant.....how much more transmissible is it really.....is this latest surge really down to that or just a combo of peoples covid rule fatigue (ive witnessed loads) plus the consistent govt. mis-management and missed opportunities?

Coronavirus Thread (Off Topic, Politics)

Looks like GPs are not on board with the vaccination plan. Listening to the experts again Matthew? Every scientist I've heard has said it's a wise move. Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk

He’s said fuck all as usual.

EDIT - I’ll amend that. What he said about national restrictions is right actually - but today’s pressing matter is schools and he’s bottled it again.

How has he bottled it? He's called it spot on. No one wants to close schools and they should remain open if possible but we need a plan to deal with the fact we are going to have to close them down.

In some places it maybe, no if's no buts

If you can keep some schools open in some areas then you should every fucking day of the week. It's morally wrong not to.

Would you send a teenager to a house party of 30 for 6 hours in this climate?

No there will be other places where you can keep schools open.

Burnham is right when he says you should allow local councils to make the call.

That's a terrible analogy, are the same conditions present in both situations? Is the behaviour of said teenagers going to be the same?

No

In the end of you can keep schools open you should. I know it is shit and they must be horrible places to work at the moment but as has been said many times it's the lesser of many evils.

Won’t be long until the schools themselves make the call, if they’re not already.

This has echoes of the March lockdown. We just need the footballers to refuse to play, and it's deja vu all over again.

It should echo the March lockdown, the numbers are similar!

55000 new infections
454 deaths - got to be one of the largest Sunday figures ever.

I’m sure Boris is correct though optimism will get us through this

There were 79k infections by specimen date on 29th Dec as it stands, it's generally accurate after 5 days or so, tomorrow should confirm final number.

It annoys me that after 10 months of this, the number of infections reported on a particular day is still the main figure reported, it is no real use to anybody.

The numbers being reported are wild and completely unsustainable.

He's said that schools should remain open hasn't he? Because he stupidly came out with that "no ifs, no buts" stuff in the summer

Page 1 of Safeguarding says ‘keeping children safe in education’ - right now it’s not possible to do so.

I know we are arguing about it, but I can totally see both sides here. I don’t want to send my own children based on one being vulnerable and also based on what I’ve physically witnessed myself.

lol it’s really not that radical - it’s a service not a machine for profit and many conservative leaning countries have a nationalised railway system
