A few of us were talking about this at work the other day. One colleague charges their kid £300 a month and that gets them all the laundry meals etc . Another colleague doesn’t charge her kid anything . My daughter is coming back from uni and will be back at home as she will be working . Back in the day when I got my first full time job Mum charged me £30 a week but when I was saving the deposit for my house she gave me all the money back .

When i got to my early twenties my mum tried to get me to pay a bit of rent, but my dad rarely enforced it. Mum always was tighter than my dad
I won't charge mine anything for as long as he wants to be here.

I got charged £140 a month when I was on £10,500 a year as an apprentice......I used to hate handing it over as my mum and dad smoked and visited the pub regularly for a couple every night!

Vowed to charge my children "rent" to teach them the value of money but will deposit it to their savings each week. Then when they decide to buy their own home, they will have a deposit.

This is the best way

Never charged anything - always seemed a bit odd to me

My old man died when I was 17. Having just started an apprenticeship, pay was woeful, but I had to give my mum some cash every week. It was tough enough for her so it felt right.

when my kids were at home, I never charged them anything, but also put something away each month for them from their births. It bought their first cars for them.

This is the approach we are going to take

My mum did the same, I was paying £60 a month from When I was 16. I moved out at 25 and she had been saving it and gave it me towards a deposit.

I paid my Mum and Dad "board" from the minute i started my apprenticeship until I left home.
It was the normal thing back then tbh.
Never took any money from my own children though.

No right way or wrong way in this one imo, as it all depends on your own personal circumstances.

My eldest lad is just about to start a sandwich course as part of his third year at Uni, we`re paying his rent and bills, plus I provided him with a car, as he needs one for the stuff he`s going to be doing.

We`ve paid his rent and bills all the time he`s been at Uni, as we don`t want him to have the student life that we had, choosing whether to eat properly or go out on the piss ( going out on the piss always won ! )

" If" he comes home at the end of Uni and gets a job in the profession that he`s chosen to pursue, we`d maybe think about a token financial gesture, but more than likely what we`d do is put a deposit down on his first place for him and he`d pay the mortgage.

My attitude towards this, comes from being brought up by parents, who didn`t really give a shit and gave me no financial help at all and you were same with my missus.

Yep me too, paid 25% of what I earnt as an apprentice until i left home.
My generation were subsequently too easy on our kids. Mistake I think.

Can't believe that Reeves isn't all over this, another growth industry to tackle the fiscal shortfall.
You think I jest, you have no idea;

Can't remember the exact amount, it was too long ago, but I definitely paid from the day I started working and it was a decent amount. Certainly did not get any of it back for a car or house deposit!

Exactly the same as this, must be a generation thing.

Exactly what I intend to do when the time comes.

Paid my mum £250 a month after I got my first job at 18 until I left. SIngle parent so money was tight. Got food and bills paid for as part of that.

Don't have kids but if I did I'd do something similar, as I think it's a good life lesson, but as others have said put it in a savings account and give it them back for a deposit later on.

If he's doing a sandwich course maybe you should charge him subs instead?

If you're allowed to.
Don't get me wrong, but I suspect big business will have other plans for them and the money you've saved on their behalf!😢

Or big Govt.
